I collect records of the 80s. I used to have many crates when I was a teen but over the years my collection went down to about 10 records. Thanks to ebay and amazon i have been able to rebuild my collection and since 1998 my collection had grown massively. My biggest collection is of Cyndi Lauper. I have 83 records just on her alone. from 12" singles, imports, etc
I work with a friend who has about 9000 records. He spread the virus and now I slowly start to collect records. He had this idea of showing his collection on our tv programme. So we started out just showing the records on music, but now we changed it into a biography item. And we also put it on our youtube page.
@Iamcola65 If that's your attitude, then you might wake up: it is NOT 2012, it's still 2011(hello?!!), and CD's are also going the same extinction route of LPs, cassettes, 8-track tapes, 78's and cylinder records. Last I checked, most people are downloading their music, so that CD you are praising is headed for the thrift shop bins too. I will always collect vinyl and love it when the CD and MP3 people dump their whole LP collections at the thrift stores!
@HunterMann Yeah everything is going completely digital, even CD's are going down in production when you aren't counting popular music. I have a CD and a vinyl collection. My CD one is massive at 98 CD's with 2 that I have no clue why I bought because I don't even like them (2 CD's by Testament, but hey I guess every collector has those in their collection and they don't know how they got there or just got them because they were free or wanted to support a artist).
@squezey1 , maybe I was just high as fuck that day and wasn't thinking straight, who knows. Anyways I also have 25 vinyls in my small collection favorites with about of course 2 that I just bought in the moment with a little extra money to spend because they were rare and in genre I loved that is almost impossible to find anything physical for and1 that I also just bought because I wanted to check it out and it was super cheap, so really I have 22 favorites there.
@squezey1 I have 4 more vinyls being shipped to me now. You heard my story and now you too should start collecting your favorite stuff now because soon it's all gonna be digital except for some popular music and some devoted artists. Great video! Sounds like you've got some soul stirrin' LPs man! I have a huge LP collection(well,...7,000) and have just started collecting some great 45's. I am hoping to stock a juke box with them, but wonder if I can change out the hard industrial needle for a high quality stylist? Any suggestions?
If anyone is interested in seeing a fully functional QUADRAPHONIC system, check out JakeMiller21 videos and search "CD-4 Quadraphonic" to find several. Thanks.
Nice to see his passion for records, but he's playing them all on Technics decks? What a waste. Someone like 'Ron' who has a passion for spinning great wax should really invest in an Audiophile-grade turntable with matching stylus like an AC Inc or Rega. Not a DJ-grade thrash deck for club use. Just saying.
@trumpet90909 You'd be surprised about the Technics. The 1200s have quite a good reputation amongst the audiophile crowd and there is a huge market for mods out there to take them to the level of an LP12 or a Michel for instance.
Since Ron is also DJ that may also explain the 1200s.
@drewe181 I don't know about being surprised. I used to own a pair of Technics 1200s. 20 years and 10 odd turntables later, I still swear by Rega. I have no problems with 'laptop musicians', but turntablists who abuse classic soul 45s and what not, makes me cringe. So I could buy a 1200 for $1000, but then have to spend another $500-700 to make it any good? My Rega rp1 cost $590 and leaves the technics for dead sonically. Just saying.
this guy should probably try to figure out what he's REALLY missing in his life and stop chasing material items for some elusive fulfilment. though, that's not to say i wouldn't like that whole shelf of his for myself.
We have just made our own auction vinyl record website, if you like vinyl please check us out. Right now, listening to Stephen Stills' Jet Set (sigh) on the new Manassas lp I picked up today & loving it. :-) I can relate to the shaking he's talking about. I was ridiculously excited when today I found what is close to an Ex. copy of Led Zeppelin II. That's one that has been avoiding me for awhile. Definitely worth the $5.
What i learned early on collecting vinyl, is that you should try to get the lp in the best possible condition the first time you buy it. Nothing worse than having to upgrade a record no matter what it's worth over and over. Cover should be in full shrink, no tears. No dog ears or rough edges. Vinyl itself should appear to be virtually unplayed under a direct light. All inner sleeves and misc. posters and stickers etc should be present. Watch for re-seals!
I have an original US Import mint condition The Junkyard Band-Sardines 12" on Def Jam. Took me many years to find. Finally found it on eBay last year. It's now safe in my collection. :o)
@GeorgeHarrison66 Hey George, I am the guy in the video. I am totally surprised that you have sardines. Who would have thunk it? I am from DC and now live in Brooklyn. That record is so rare but incredible. Love the B side "Word". That is a go-go classic. I'm honored that we share love for that piece of vinyl. Much respect sir.
Beware of new vinyl re-issues, some cutting houses uses digital conversions in the spacing process, which makes the album like a CD printed on vinyl = mojo gone. Spread the awareness of it, I think it is a fraudulent practice because that info isn´t stated on the product.
Good news and bad news. Good news is that there is a company that makes shelves just for storing records. Bad news is is that the company is located in England. They're called Red Displays.
Go to those modern furniture stores. Alot of them have those "cube" bookshelves that just so happen to the the perfect size for records its actually not that hard to find, assuming your in a major city.
SARDINES AND PORK AND BEANS! man we are on the same page. I found a compilation with that song on it. wow you came left on that and I have been looking for it too. man left field on that
I've been collection for less than one year. I got my record player on my birthday. It was my brother's (not old) old one. He gave me a few 45's. My first one was 'Nazi Punks Fuck off' by Dead Kennedys.
my 1st record was Ac/Dc Let there be rock and now i have 300 records i love them more then cds :) its to bad they could make a record player in a car scerw cds lol
A lot of the posted responses of this video seem really childish. Who cares how many pieces of vinyl you own. If you have a quality collection of stuff you enjoy thats the point. I get tired of people talking about their 50,000 piece collections, bla bla bla.....Many of these collections have a lot of crap in them. People should be more concerned about the quality of the music in the collection versus shere numbers. Sounds like this guy has a passion for collecting - all the power to him!
I agree fully. You buy records to enjoy them. I collect mint to near mint albums but I play them. These so called collectors who spend $1,000 on a sealed album because it's rare and sit it on a shelf have more money then brains. I think condition is important but enjoying your purchase even more. Records are meant to be enjoyed by being listened to
@beninski707 I agree...you don't want to venerate any object.. but celebrate it, which means using it. Alot of usage can be done when some reasonable care is taken.
I don't agree with the concepts of collecting and material "rarity".... my collection is not a collection, its a library that I consult (use) everyday.
Maybe if the world would use their stuff instead of creating their own museums... we would have re-issues of all kinds of albums on vynil if demand keeps creeping up.
people collect sealed albums, just like people collect baseball cards or stamps. I collect vinyl and play them very often, but opening a rare album would just be foolish.
@Rush1013 A guy in Seattle bought a sealed Beatles LP and his son opened it one day. Inside was a scratched Neil Sedaka record. (It was a reseal) The guy had gotten punk'd to the tune of $175... ouch!
@Rush1013 Yes, but not always easy to find legit sources. eBay's feedback system has its loopholes the scammers figure out, so that's never a for sure. That guy in Seattle bought the LP in the parking lot on the first day of their bog show&sale. The guy was loading boxes onto his cart, acting like he was a booth dealer, but never actually pushed his cart into the event venue... As with anything, if a price is too good to be true, it probably is a scam. For now, I'm sticking to thrift shops.
Can someone please explain to me why this guy is so smug, when he's got such a small amount of records?
