For 2007 Version :
1-insert the pic
2-click on tab (picture tool-format) above
3-on the left - the 3rd option in the 1st column : Recolor
4-click on the arrow
5-The last Option : Set Transparent Color
6-click on the white background !
& that's it ;)

@PREDATOM56 The process is the same in 2003 and 2007. PowerPoint 2010 included some new tools--they work really well!--that enable better background removal.
