The recut American version of this sequence is actually an improvement. The additional stumbling around of Max at the beginning and Max's narration don't add anything, in fact they detract. And the captain's dialog ruins the comedic effect of the cut to the boiler room. Better to have him just growl and let the audience imagine a stream of obcenities that followed before the two were banished below deck.
