  • I'll need to try myself, or continue looking around the web to see if this works the same for an Olympus e-500. But the description you gave of your problem is the same as mine. Thanks a lot !!

  • anyone know where I can purchase that metal connector attachment? thanks in advance

  • Great job dude! Ive taken apart dozens of laptops, cellphones and iPods, but I'd never dream of taking apart my T2i.. canon cameras seem like such complicated and precise machines!

It would take a lot of guts for me to rip mine apart!

  • Thanks, also helped me repair my 40D.

The fiber optic cable doesn't necessarily have to be removed, just carefully flip the top of the camera to the back - then the fiber cable can stay on there.

Also definitely google for Canon EOS 40d repair manual - was very helpful.

  • many thanks i fixed my camera with your help

  • Do you have a video for the shutterbug repair on a canon A1100?

  • Did he died?

  • Excellent! Thank you very much. One question, I have bent pins in the Compact flash bay. Can I remove the back of the the camera to get access to the pins to straighten them out? Or do I need to remove all of the screws you did (top, front, etc ...). Thanks much!

  • Does this apply to Canon ixus i?

  • THank you!

  • Just got my 40D back in working order! It was a bit different, but the canon service manual really helped out. The major difference between the 30D and 40D seems to be a pesky fiber optic cable that goes from the main board to the pop-up flash. You have to remove the rubber sealer they used to hold it in to get it out and it's a pain. Thanks for the video, it gave me the assurance to fix my camera. Now to decide whether to sell it or keep it as a backup to my new 7D. :P

  • explain the problem please. I have a 40d and have no problems with it, but im curious to know what this common problem is

  • Thanks, before I take my 350D apart, do you know if they are similar, and this will apply?

  • @tzethye i believe this space among specifically semi pro and professional is small these days. d7000 is all we all need. go to... freedslr dot com change dot with . and get the chance to bring home completely new Nikon D7000

  • many thanks i fixed my camera with your help

  • I just replaced my switch using this video as a guide.

Thank you for taking the time to make this.

  • Man I just cleaned the buttons and my 30D is up and running again. Thank You

I'm not gonna tell canon to suck my balls cause I know I will need them for something...LOL

  • glad that you were able to fix it. you really need to know what you are doing

  • Can we see this in slow-mo please? :)

Is my 50D also affected by this shutter button problem?... and what exactly is the problem and what causes it? I have not experienced any problems with the shutter button, not yet anyway. But should that problem ever come up, I am sure I won't be spending $300 on repair! :) And any information on how to DIY is welcome. So thank you for sharing the knowledge!

  • i can't even put that freaking screw driver on my eos 50D :D:D

  • After watching this fantastic video, NO WAY IN HELL WOULD I ATTEMPT THIS SURGERY.

Canon, shame on you for so many problems.

    -m

  • @martyg374

What problems? Please inform me! :)

  • im trying in my 20D

some of the screw are screwed LOL

and im nable to retirre the one of dioptry dial

  • im trying in my 20D

some of the screw are screwed LOL

and im nable to retirre the one of dioptry dial

  • On the 40D, is it possible to open the shutter button part without opening the whole camera? seriously scary when I'm thinking about opening the whole camera like what you just did.

  • holy hell, 50billion screws OMG

  • is this for the error 99 and constantly firing shutter? - I was looking at buying a used 20d (finances stretched) but after seeing so many with err99 i think I may go look at others. hows the sensors in 20d's for dead pixels?

  • U're the MAN dude, this video has saved my a55 many times!!!

  • I'm afraid this does not apply to the 40D, the housing has different srews layout...I almost messed m y cam up...

  • @pedroelmacho It's not that much different. Yes the layout is different, but you shouldn't be attempting this without a good aptitude for mechanical assembly/disassembly.

  • hello, I have a problem with my camera 50D, to check the pictures sometimes the image is frozen, remove the batteries to the image disappears from the LCD, when replacing the batteries the camera will not start. The camera works well at times and then fails. I want to give your opinion and I suggest I do, thanks.

P.D. You think you could fix it by updating the firmware

  • Thanks this was really helpful! btw wats the name of the song??

  • Half think this is a joke. Why would they bury the part that wears out first, so deep down, that you have to take the whole frigin camera apart. Should be able to screw a new one in when it wears out. Obsessive compulsive people should not even look at this video, let alone try it. Think you do need a shot of adrenalin to even attempt it. Well done and thanks for posting.

  • there went the WARRANTY LOL

  • Cool. I had gotten it done great! I downloaded the video and played with VLC Media player and slowed it down.

    Your video helped a lot!

  • @profroopchan Part 1 of the slowed down version is up.

  • Part 1 of the slowed down version is up.

  • Hi! please post the slow down version :)

  • @redlange Part 1 of the slowed down version is up.

  • My 20D failed me on my last vacation; unable to autofocus and reframe. Camera would refocus on full depression of the shutter button. Would also , intermittently, not fire at all unless I wiggled my finger around. On disassembly, I did see a discoloration on the bottom leaf of the button mechanism, from the smallest amount of moisture, probably from sea spray. Thanks for the vid, my camera is back to normal.

  • This is insane DIY!!!

  • Love your vid, it inspires me, what type of video camera did you use and what software for editing. thanx again.

  • you are the MAN!!!!!!

I have to send mine to the SAT!

  • Is there a way for me to play this video in a normal speed (the fast motion get me dizzy!!). Perhaps there's a way for me to download it and play it on my computer? I have a 50D with a very dirty viewfinder and I like to clean it. I have got to the focus screen and SI plate, but the dirt is still there, so I think it may be on the other side of the pentaprism and will require a disassembly to get rid of the dirt!

  • Are all buttons like that on other cameras?

reminds me of cleaning the stupid tv remote controls with alchol.

  • This is awesome dude!!!!!!! I was skeptical to begin with but man, are you the man! You're like Macho Man Randy Savage, MAN!! Sweet! Thanks!!!

  • See another video using isopropylalchohol without dismantling the camera.

  • Does anyone know how I can dismantle the menu button from the GH1?

  • Big-big-big respect for this video! My shutter button works now like new!!!

    respect from Russia! =)

  • You are very talented. I showed this to some of my repair technicians, and they were fully impressed. A couple recommendations - they recommend discharging the flash when taking the front cover off, they also recommend replacing the shutter release switch.

Kudos for such an informative video!

  • The first time, I discharged the flash with my finger. HAHA. I learned the hard way, and just avoided those contacts :)

  • One note though, even though I cleaned the contacts with Alcohol, I followed the video and used a eraser on the contacts, and I was amazed at how much dirt came off with each time. I erased the contacts, then when it got dirty, I cleaned it on a piece of paper, then erase again. I ended up doing this for about 1 hr to get off as much dirt as I could. It took a surprising long time to get off all the dirt off mine using the eraser. In the end, it was clean though.

  • I just finished this on a 30D. Thanks a WHOLE lot. Using this and the 20D shutter release PDF, I was able to complete repair my shutter.

My 30D is now working like brand new again.

  • anyone having really crap sharpness? on the 40d?

  • only thing that scared me... the camera was in the "on" position the whole time haha and the battery was NOT the first thing that came out? Besides those things, great video! I love my 30D and hope to never have to open her up tho! haha

  • haha yeah. I remember the battery after a second. The first time I did it I had it out, but I was so excited to make a video (because it worked) that I forgot the second time lol.

  • well done! thanks for sharing!

  • I would like to get the slowed down version. Do you have it available? Thanks

  • @profroopchan

To get a slowed down version, this is what I did.

I found a Firefox ad-on, called "FLV Resources Downloader" and downloaded the video. I then used "VLC media player" to play the video, and I used the option to slow down the video so I can watch it slower. The slowest speed is still a faster, but at least I can see what he is doing in detail.

AdrenalinXI, if you do not like people downloading your video, you can delete this comment. I would like a proper slowed down copy though

  • @profroopchan Part 1 of the slowed down version is up.

  • i´m going to disassemble my 40D today, do i need to solder anything? (repair the button)

  • ... купите парню пинцет, желетельно набор, мучается!

  • Thanks bro.. my Canon XT shutter button started going. I used your video to take the camera apart.

On the XT the shutter button is connected to a piece that comes off when unscrewed. I used alcohol and q-tips, would pour a few drops into the shutter relay button and would press on it with the tip of q-tip (cotton striped). Did this 8 times and I could feel the button get a better clicking sound. Put it back together and worked like a charm.

$300.....Canon can suck my balls as well... LOL...

  • hahaha hmm 300dollers or possibly a new camera?

and last time i checked a Nikon user never had to disassemble their cameras?

  • @cameraman1512 go fXXX yourself

  • hey buddy don't be pissed off that, that my d300s would out preform a canon any day(with the exception of a canon 1d)

  • Hey thanks man! I just needed to get to the usb input that I pushed through the casing when I stepped on a wire and pulled it. I never would have known that the screws were covered by a peel off cover HA!

    All the best in 2010

    Jim

  • awesome.. thanks..

i just did it on my pre-owned 20D and works like charm..

  • Thanks for the video. You saved me $300 dollars... suck my balls canon!!! LOL

  • hey. thanks for this video it's very helpful. have you tried fixing a shutter curtain because that's what i wanna find out if canon can still be trusted on this. i brought my camera to service for the 2nd time for an error 99 repair. i doubt it if they really do replacement on parts if they say parts need replacements when in fact they only clean them. right? pls let me know if have any advice. video is better.haha

  • Mate, this combined with the 20D_Shutter_Release.pdf guide found on google helped me fix my 40d shutter, although I must add that though similar, the cameras are constructed rather differently making for some really tight unchartered work. saved me $300 :)

  • So this is for the shutter button...I just confirmed via a camera repair shop that my 30D has a bad shutter i.e. I need to replace the shutter. Any thoughts on that? I think this video will help me get it dissambled but I don't need to clean my shutter button.

My symptom is Err 99 and the shutter stays stuck in the down position.

    Thanks,

    Roy

  • @motleypixel buy a new one

  • I've got the same problem with my 50D at the moment. Canon Japan are claiming that they've never had any reports of the problem.

This video is okay but it's been sped up so much that I wouldn't be confident enough to perform the servicing myself - it doesn't even mention what solution is being used. Also a bit more commentary during the contact cleaning part would have been helpful.

  • this was on one of your flickr pics, helped me cause the video was too fast...

    goole this:

    20D_Shutter_Release.pdf

  • Noooo. I checked again all connectors, under yellow tape too and still nothing :( If this help You, first time screen wokes, but after (I dont remember what i've done) it doesn't workd. You are talking albout screws (and closing body), I think it doesn't matter for LCD. I'm sad, I don't want give it to Canon service.

  • If you are going to do this, make sure you keep track of your screws. Draw each side of the camera on a piece of paper and put the screws down where they came from. I also had two screws that got the heads stripped. I had to use a Dremel with a tiny engraving bit to grind off the heads.

  • Thanks, but I checked connectors few times. Is possible that i broke one (electronic tape)? Sorry 4 my english. Any ideas? I clean all cables, nothing.

  • I doubt you broke anything. The square connector on the lower ribbon connector is easy to get partway in - but you have to press on both sides to make sure it's all the way in. And there was a yellow piece of tape on mine that was getting in the way that I had to move.

  • I followed this video to repair my 40D. The 40D connectors are a bit different. There is a fiber optic cable that leads from the main board on the chassis of the camera to the top panel. It plugs into a hole in the white chip on the main board. There is also a ribbon cable with a two row header that plugs into the bottom of the main board rather than a flat connector. I had to take the back off several times to make sure all the connectors were properly seated when the eTTL and LCD didn't work.

  • Hello.

I done everything like i video, bot when I finished my LCD doesn't work... button was ok. I tryed fix it a couple od times, but i cant rapair it :( Camera works ok, bot screen is off all time. Can You help me? What I done wrong?

    Thank You.

  • I had the same problem. You need to double check all the connectors to make sure they are clean and seated properly.

  • thanks for video. i managed to wash my 40d in salt water. sending to repair is not an option as it'll cost more than camera. i'll try....

  • oh my good lord.

  • Amen. Lol. Nothing more to be said about this video.

  • i baught a camera about 3 monts ago , its a 40D , but i have almost the same problem, if i push half it is working evry time, but if i want to shoot then : focus and nothing, i hol about 3 sec and aftar that it took a shot what can i doo ?

  • very similar... screw locations and ribbon cables might be slightly different... but should be very much the same.

  • i'll be cleaning my shutter button on my 40D soon as i was having the same problems you were having.. it doesnt look too hard.. just a few things you have to keep track of and be careful with.. i'll be sure to take lots of pics..

btw, when you pealed the rubber gripping off of the front and back of the camera, does it just stick back on when you put it back or do you have to put additional glue or adhesive?

  • what was the liquid that you used in the video on the Q tip? did u use that to clean or just used it to pick up the peices of the shutter?

  • how close is this to what repairing a 40D would be like?

  • brilliant, thanks for posting.

    @lighthalo, that's a good question.

anyone know if one could do the same with a 40D or are there any special differences?

  • Not Bad... Sometimes the release needs to be replaced and can not just cleaned. I noticed u did not discharge the flash capacitor and lucky u. It could have gave u a nice shock !!

  • oh wow i didnt think of that.. but if the camera has been off for a while i dont think the capacitor would be charged.. where is it located anyway?

  • uhm i think i would rather send it to canon to repair?

  • no, why ? hehe yes yes yes ...

  • to njw1224- bought from an Australian company called "Parts Overnight"- (I'm in Australia)- Try to find an eqivalent in your country. Agree with comments about trying cleaning contact spray/ compressed air- it may work for a very short time, but not reliable in long term- I know-I tried.

  • wow,,, it takes all that just to repair a shutter button??...

  • you have balls of steel to open up your camera mate! ... I for one could not do it ... i'm sweating at the very thought of it!

  • Thanks for sharing. I've just fixed mine. It took me 45 mins and few euros for very small screwdriver :-)

And funny thing is they didn't want to pay me anything for it today in the morning in the shop since it had a defect. And I would have given it away for 50 euros.

  • it's working!!! :D THX for tutorial !!

  • Here's a much easier fix. I have a 40d that had the same exact problem... intermittent shutter button... sometimes it wouldn't fire at all. I got canned air and blasted it down into the gap around the actual plastic button... absolutely flawless like new again! That's it... no taking it apart and all this bullshit.

  • I tried this.. Didnt work at all. I dont even see how it would work.. Theres really no space between the button and the camera body.

    Thanks anway.

  • bullshit?

you cannot blow out the dirt from MANY hours of use, if you lucky enough and camera nearly new, you can blow out dirt which has fallen in just before.

this guy knows what and why.

  • Good video! What cleaning product did you use on the contacts?

  • Great vid, thank you!! Bought the part from Canon no. WC2-5568-000 for 30D; no. CH9-0233-000 for 20D -cheap -about $10 each. Can't see any difference between them. Make certain you label the screws- the two top front cover screws are longer than the bottom one... took me 45 min first time, thanks to this vid. Excellent, -I'd recommend replacing the switch, -cleaning it is fiddly and involves reshaping the metal retainer to dismantle

  • Where did you get the parts? Do you have a web address for the company?

  • If the average person attempts this -well you will want to cry when you screw it up. If is is an older camera go for it. But good luck.

  • Awesome job. Took me 20 minutes tops, and the camera went from being a frustrating, mis-firing POS to machine-gun consistency.

  • SHUTTER BUTTON NOT WORKING? SIMPLE SOLUTION. LEAVE THE CAMERA ON 2 Coompletly dischargew the battery. then take the batery out anbd fully charge for 24 hours, then put battery back in, and shutter button should work.

Shutter button has some connection with battery not charged or nonnections on battery.

  • Thank you so much! I have a 20D that suddenly stopped taking pictures (but auto focused normally). I pushed hard and wiggled the button and it worked. Will do the service myself. Thanks for your DIY contribution!

  • He might be....but ofc his smart enough... Don't waste money if its not necessary.

  • Did you have any problems with the grip??

    How do you Glue them?

    Do you use any glue?

    Thanks!!

  • no issues with the grip... it's just adhesive and can easily be reapplied. I've had mine off about 7 times now hah!

  • Sorry, my engish is poor, but i nedd make you a queston.

Did you have any problems with the rubbers (grip)??

    How do you Stick them?

    They dont need any glue?

They are well after you stick them?

    I hope your answer!!

    Thanks!!

  • Nope, they work great just re-applying!

  • I just did the same on my 20D. Works as it shoud now. I had constant problems with the button, except for the initial focus.

    Thank you again

  • you're very welcomE!

  • so $300 please :)

this is amazing it costs one arm for this and you did it very well, how many do you repair every weeks ?? you could be millionaire ^^

  • Nah, I haven't had the time to promote this in anyway. Just here and spammed on the internet so when other people search for the issue they can find their way to this video and do it themselves :)

  • This is great. Not as bad as it may look; took me only 1 HOUR & thought it would take 3! Just played video as I went along so I knew I was doing exactly what he was doing & when he did it.

Now my camera works just fine! :)

Thanx for creating & posting this video!!

  • You're welcome! thanks for the comment and positive feedback. this really does work!

  • dude that was wild i wouldnt have the balls to do that though i havent had the problem

  • Now you know how to when you do want to dive into it :)

  • awesome

  • Amazing video. I was terrified the whole time

  • haha...I was confused AND terrified

  • ALL IS WELL~!

  • your chipmunk voice is hilarious

  • so this isn't something I'd wanna do in the field...nice work!

  • Hi Ryan. I'm going to do this repair, this weekend. Can I get a link to the slowed down video ? Thank you !

  • Still haven't gotten it up. Should have what it takes with this video :)

  • I've bought the part for a couple of bucks and i plan to replace via resoldering... but anyways, how many shots do you have on that shutter? if it's dead, how many shots do you think you got out of it>/

  • Well, I figure im at about the 40,000 to 60,000 mark on my shutter. It's still working fine. The problem was just the shutter button was dirty and had poor contact. The shutter is rated for 100,000 so it still should have a fair bit of life left in it. Sometimes I doubt this based on the amount of noise in my shots. :S

  • I run the 20D and never ever get any response emails from canon when I ask them what my shutter is rated for. Do you think the 30D and the 20D are the same?

I know that this is the button(I'm doing it right now but im actually replacing it) but I also know of the shutter itself having problems after a certain amount of shots. just like to see how others are faring.

and the 20D/30Ds were always loud :P

  • cool

  • Comment removed

  • Dude,

I just played this video and it's like running at 50X. You musta been on Meth doing this intricate work...pretty impressive!

    :-)

  • haha. I think it's actually 8x speed.. which is dang fast haha. a 30-40 minute video would bore most people

  • omg its a horror flick! D:

  • OMG!!!! Horror

  • Any suggestions what to do now that I have stripped two of the screws?! :(

  • pick up a size 0 philips before you start and learn how to operate a screwdriver :)

but for now, it depends which one's you've stripped. all of the screws I would say are necessary so look around online and order some new ones!

until then, be very careful or just set it aside :)

  • thanx a lot dude ..you beter fix your keyboard first...lol

  • any gamer knows that those keys = death

  • YOU KNOW IT :D

i hate hate hate those keys

  • That's some skill.

  • 2x400D, 3x350D, 2x40D all of mine suffer this excact problem

I now have a fooked shutter on a 40D. Any chance of sorting a vid to repair that?

    I'm impressed!!

  • I would LOVE to have the slower complete version. My shutter button is getting progressively worse.

  • I would very much like to have the slowed down version, as I am considering doing this and I can't quite get all the info I need from this video.

  • i can never pull myself together to do something like that...

    very impressive

  • just do it :)

start by taking just the back off... then put it back on.... next time take the back and the front off... then back together and just keep increasing the difficulty :)

  • Hi,Can you post a video on how to service a canon slr 5000,630,650,750,850 models great video by the way, however missed a detail can U draw on paper of the front bottom left right and back of the camera on paper, and drwa where the screw goes the spot on paper that you took it from on the camera?

  • Keep in mind this is for the 30D and there are instructions for the 20D with diagrams on my flickr page which is in the video info.

Someone attempting this repair themselves should be able to manage finding and replacing all of the necessary screws before they bother thinking about the shutter button.

  • Guess I know how to dismantle the unit but don't know how to assemble it back too many screws :Þ

  • I recommend you just draw a rough photo of the front bottom left right and back of the camera on paper, and put the screw in the spot on paper that you took it from on the camera :) it's like a visual label to where it goes back in!

  • You are a God to me (bow)

  • hahah thanks i guess :)

  • impressive.

I saw a link to your flickr page about this on dpr, and I can see you on dpr while you made the video at 3:02 lol

what is your username on dpreview?

  • PcXrS - on dprieview

I remember looking there about a year ago for what the problem was that I was having with my button :)

  • you should consider doing it for others, and make some money.

    you sure deserve it.

    bravo

  • If there are those in my area I definitely would. But for those further away, they now can know the problem and fix it themselves, or get a friend who knows more about electronics to do it for them. :)

  • For instructions, pictures, and more details about this process and a link to some guides, go to my flickr.
