I am trying to locate the PDK equipped car and its new owner, i am popping into David Sutton (ex Audi Sport UK) this week and i will ask, at the 1985 RAC Walter drove the PDK car (before trashing it on the 1st night) and it was extraordinary to listen to, seamless changes, NO dip in revs and all sorts of noises on the over run, the electronic box behind the seat was 3 times the size of a briefcase! it's now the size of a mobils phone - amazing
Further to the PDK issue, i understand the PDK equipped car was sold a few months back and the PDK gearbox has been mapped and set up, not sure who purchased the car but would be entertaining to see the car in action again
Another thing about power outputs, The E2 produced an `official` 530 bhp for the 1986 season, we knew the car had 580bhp but no more! talk of 700 bhp+ from Audi, Peugeot and Lancia were untrue (peoples imagination) the 1987 Pikes Peak car produces 602 PS approximately 598BHP not 1000bhp as people talk about!!! the 5 cylinder engine in competition peaked at 715BHP for the 1989 IMSA 90 Quattro remember 600BHP crude suspension, tyres and brakes by todays standards and poor weight distribution
Not a PDK car i'm afraid, the car is in a museum at Audi and you hear completely seamless changes with this gearbox absolutely NO dip in revs between changes
sounds like the PDK gearbox equipped model , awesome bit of kit , amazing to think that porsche /audi were developing that technology over 20 years ago an its only really recently came to the mass market through dsg/s-tronic and of course porsches own pdk system , gotta hand it to the germans they know how to build some teriffic machines :D
Not really ;) The quattro developt only the full potencion of the 4 wheel drive. The idea came from a Truck in Norway i dont know it so good. but This truck has allready quattro ;)
@vvaall77 detuned gallardo engines, which still doesn't back your statement of it being opposite since the gallardo engine is based off of old V8 Audi engines
A WRC has more torque than a G.B car, the suspension and tyres are a lot better and as Cristianmovellan said, they have electronic helps and settings. Their engines are better in terms of reliability and effectiveness, BUT, in those days, they were concentrated to build real rallycars, not laboratories on wheels, piloted by microchips... That was the real magic, these were the real rallycars: powerful, fast, light and difficult to drive.
yup they have more torque, but less rpm, so after going through gears the torque applied to the wheels is less more on the lower gears, but much less on the higher gears... just like in diesel vs gasoline engines.
Current rally cars benefit from electronic stabiliser systems, modern suspension and mostly modern compound tyres and are faster overall now but the GB cars were just fucking awesome for their acceleration and sounds and the Quattro sound stood out above the others.
they were stunning because of their sound and bruteness,AND they were dangerous as hell. thats what made them so spectacular. the audi E2 S1 wasn`t the fastest but he gave the most show.i cant understand why people cant fall in love with that amazing 5 cylinder noise
Absolutely! MUCH MORE than a WRC car! They proved too much, resulting in a series of fatal crashes, that's the reason why Group B was banned! I love any GB car and their amazing sound! Specially the S4... My God, it sounds like a superbike! Anyway, can somebody imagine the feeling of driving a 850Kg car with more than 500bhp?! The Delta S4 Tour de Corse developed about 612bhp! And... Audi was testing an amazing 980bhp engine for the next season! It was tested at Peaks Peak, Colorado...
Well, i think the main reason is people live their life at TV or youtube. Motorsport at TV is boring as hell! My advice - get real - watch it live and compare! Believe me, there is no need to be an "expert" to feel the difference...
I had the opportunity to feel the killing B's in real life and WRC, of course and... Believe me, there is no comparison... G.B awakens in us a feeling that not even in 40 years of evolution, a wrc will ever awaken ...
know i have posted the same message everywhere but need all to know In 2004/5/6? (cannot remember) a metro 6r4 (probably the slowest of the Groub B Cars) came 8th despite going off backwards at 80mph, and set some fastest stage times in Ireland Overal against the WRC cars (at the hands of Colin McRae RIP) just goes to show that a well driven S1/T16/S4 could possibly still win rallies over 20 years later against modern technology.
There's been a huge gain in tires over the last 20 YEARS, semi auto gearboxes and turbo anti-lag, but although the WRC motors run turbo restrictors don't be fooled by their stated 300hp max. Modern WRC motors are all about torque and most have well over 500 NM so they're basically equal in torque to the Group B cars, just missing top end power due to the restrictor, but they're not geared for top end anyways!
Main problem with modern WRC cars is that they sound so shite. This is due to the ridiculous 100db noise limit. Even Group A sounded good (the Celica ST185 and ST205 really exploded around the stages with massive volume and were very similar to the Audi S1 in noise). WRC cars produce crappy muffled pops and sound way too tame.
WRC's still running in some european Group B old stages and they're slower! Why?! I watched Group B cars running here in Portugal as I saw WRC cars at the same conditions and... Forget it! They were a lot faster!
Do you know what a 131 Abarth is? 'Course not. But... welll... I would love to watch a RWD (with a little more than 26obhp) Group 4 car beating a Group B (with a little more than 440bhp, AWD) car or even a... Kit car! It was a real great car, in the 70's.

But not the 5 cylinder ;-). Well a Lambo would need a set of two 5 pots but it would sound awesome!

@RumbachSanyi it's opposite, an lamborghini engine is built in some audi models like new R8 and S8 both have V10 gallardo engine.

TransAmDrifter. That name says a whole lot about how much grey matter you have in your brain.
And no, Lamborghini doesn't have an Audi engine in it.
