JM: It's a trade. It takes years of experience to get really good at it. At the airlines, we call this trade "sheetmetal mechanic." This usually includes the seperate skill of "composite repair." I was a Crew Chief in the Air Force. At the airlines I've done it all, including sheetmetal repair. Sheetmetal repair is like anything.....if you have the training, the tools and the parts, you can keep an aircraft flying for decades, no problem.
JM: Sheetmetal repairs, like EVERY single repair on an aircraft, is done with strict adherance to proper maintenance manual references. Nothing is done to an aircraft that isn't covered by a manufacturer's engineering approved reference and nothing is done to an aircraft that isn't documented.(signed for) Never do undocumented work. I saw many good mechanics when I was in the Air Force. American aircraft have remarkable safety and reliability.
JM: Aircraft mechanic is a thankless job. Mechanics are universally hated by absolutely everyone....and I'm not kidding. I'm not trying to be funny. Tens of thousands of good highly skilled licensed mechanics have had their lives DESTROYED by the criminal actions of airline and manufacturing companies. Pensions stolen. Contracts broken. Labor stolen. Wages slashed. Don't make the mistake of becoming an aircraft mechanic. You've been warned.
amazing i know how to rivet and remove rivets. I also know how to inspect props. I could do this. However this war on terror is an infinite war. It has no ending. I would like to join the armed services but I dont agree with the wars being fought. Yes wars. We havent really left Iraq.
i graduate from this school in 18 days! its one of the hardest schools in army aviation and its also the best MOS! sheetmetal to the rescue!
