If the class is so empty and the volume isn't working, why don't they just move their lazy butts down to the front rows? Seems like a more elegant solution than sitting in the back and complaining.
Any truth to the stories of heart transplant recipients developing the behaviors (specifically, cravings for foods not previously cared for), of their anonymous donors?
Thank you Mr. Sapolsky and Stanford University for making this information freely available. I can't wait the day when I can I get a full degree from a real University via YouTube! I travel too much to sit in a classroom, but crave lectures.
that's awesome that he could ask for help! In the beginning with micing up, you know he's a real person just from that! Not to mention he hit it out of the park with that old school William Sleator stuff House of Stairs style ; ) it's nice to know that Science Fiction ain't so much fiction anymore.
At the 40 minute mark, I believe he did not mean to suggest that a squid used to be a barnacle - since a barnacle is an arthropod and a squid is a mollusk. He probably meant to say it used to be a clam or a snail.
This is just so enjoyable, although its a huge information overload when you talk about receptors/auto-regulatory systems/limitations on experimental neuroscience. Thank you Dr Sapolsky ^^
Idk why but I anticipate the pleasure of just learning moreso than I ever did in my K-12 education years.
So, someone in my family now has limbic encephalitis...Doctors can't get it under control and we are almost at a loss...literally. How and why does the limbic region of the brain become affected with encephalitis. NO cancers have been found in the body. . . . HELP! I'm not a biology student (although it interests me tremendously), I'm just a 44 year old looking for my own answers....
My friend was born with a problem with his diaphragm so he contracts his stomach to breath. So did he teach his limbic system to automatically do this while he sleeps or does another part of the brain, that helps his stomach normallydo this. I also think your videos are great for younger generations like I.
That would be "icepick" not "ice axe" at about 45:30. Lobotomies were bad enough with a pick. And it would be difficult to insert an ice axe behind the orbital bone.
Now that I've made it through the first half of the course & finished all the buckets... I've got to go back to the beginning & start over just to understand the 90% that bounced off my thick skull!
@mjag1988 : it's truly amazing what the top universities have been releasing online. This is valuable information and is what Stanford sells to make a living. To get it for free on demand is like entering a new era of knowledge. The elite colleges, filled mostly with the wealthy (no offense intended to the wealthy) are opened up to the world.

It's great that we are starting to learn more about the brain, but its really unfortuanate that there are people who suffer from brain damage.

Does anyone have the handouts from the lecture?

Love the lectures and his great humour. Though I did not notice that some of his funny comments and remarks go over the head of the young audience.

Maybe has something to do with the development of your prefrontal cortex?

I love this guy. Not to mention the fact that he's an awesome lecturer and his own research is pretty damn interesting.

So - does the limbic system occupy a positon of luxury and power because it can talk equally well to the cortex and the reptilian brain?
