Had a place in Fort Myers Beach for 20 year but have just sold as it has become too violent and unpleasant for decent people. The beach now is basically drugs and crime with pretty much no place for a family to eat of drink. I Just checked and violent crime is 5 times the national average and 3 times Florida average.

I live in Fort Myers area. Fort Myers is nice if you have money to enjoy without having to work. The economy in Fort Myers sucks, 13% unemployment rate and not counting the noncitizen immigrants living here, so it's even higher than 13%.....Basically nice weather, beach for relaxing and boating (Quiet!! Not a party beach except on spring break), nice big shopping malls, nightlife sucks compared to other cities like Miami etc... the economy sucks...So Fort Myers is good for rich/retired people.

@cleberinthearea I couldn't agree more. I was there for 2 and a half years, starting in 2002, and that was the peak of the housing boom. I couldn't imagine what it's like now, other than how you've accurately described it. Even then, I was astounded at the lack of manufacturing and opportunity, other than the purely recreational. If you have money, yes, you can cloister yourself away in paradise. If not, good luck.

this area is one of the worst places in america to live at the present-very high unemployment,plummeting real estate values,just horrible !! this new yorker has a friend who bought her condo in fort meyers about 3 years ago for 155k,that now sells for about 20k (yes you read it correctly),on a foreclosure sale.....i am staying on long island new york,where real estate values are still strong and unemployment is less than 8%..............

Depending on how you plan to get to the beach and you can't spend all you're time there. The beach is the only good place around here. There are bits and parts of nice places but if you drive far enough you'll run into the real boring (as hell) neighborhoods.

I don't know how old you are, but that area is really NOT for younger people. There is nothing to do, but that IS THE POINT! The beaches are quiet and fabulous. The economy has hit the area very hard, so not as many restaurants. No wild parties, for sure, on the beach. But it is a very nice area.

I've lived & worked all over this country. I was in Fort Myers/ Naples from 2002-2004. A good experience but I truly felt isolated (somehow) from what was going on in the rest of the U.S. That's exactly why most go there, I understand and that's great. But for me, I needed more thriving culture, energy & community for the long haul. If you're looking for escapism, this is it. Nothing like the sunset over the Gulf, rest assured. Saw the peak of the real estate boom, too. Stay strong, Fla!
