Wow!!! Watching the movie Claudine and listening to this song just proves that nothing has changed in over 4 decades when it comes to welfare. Jobs Not welfare is still our ( most black people's) protest.
Gladys is an awesome singer and what a beauty! The Pips added a lot of vocal color to these records. There was no mistaking their sound. Curtis Mayfield blazed major R&B trails that haven't been pursued to their conclusions. Bring back music.
Now this is classic. The Curtis Mayfield sound that made soul music so memorable. He was a head of his time. If only he could see the plight of the hood now. They never heard the message in this song. Telling the "government" to say away from me. I can do this without you. Social commentary from a genius song writer. Only James Brown said it better. "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothin, Just Open Up the Door, I'll Get it Myself! No truer words.
When I was younger I thought Good Times was just a sitcom and Claudine just a movie ,only to realize...when I became an adult that this was real life and in ways reflected my current life !!!
I MEAN CURTIS WAS A GENIUS PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!ITS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT A CURTIS MAYFIELD SONG;REGARDLESS TO IF HE'S PERFORMING IT OR PRODUCING,HE WAS A BADD ASS SOMEBODY!!!....AND I HATE THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE CANT SEE AND HEAR HIM BEYOND SUPERFLY,BUT OH GOD HIS LEGACY IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN THAT.THANKS FOR THE POST,ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITES....YES LAWD!!
Maybe it's so obvious that no one bothered to mention it..., but did you ever notice that the first four notes of the introduction to this song are the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah?... It is an example of Curtis Mayfield's great wit and sense of irony that he begin a song about welfare with "Hal-le-lu-jah!"...(and, it's the only time in the song that those four notes appear)
Back in the 70s folks living "on relief, otherwise known as welfare had a house full of children while recieving benefits (food satmps) for each child, the more kids the single parent woman had, the more she recieved and the generation following raised their children on those same subsidized housing and priciples.
@rebdaigre001 Dummy the welfare system was originally created to support white folks in America. In fact, they would deny Blacks support. The whites did not want to do anything to help Blacks. Today the majority of folks are welfare are white women and their children. The media purposely projects Black faces when this topic is discussed. It is called the demonization of the Black race.
@PatsBooks You got that right, I struggled taking care of my children, without welfare. My children are proud of me and tells me that, We (black women) are the most strongest women that they know!
Every situation is different. Some men died, due to war, illness. Some of the many children in the "hood" at that time were products of rape, by friends of the family. Black & Latino sisters have had it hard since the beginning of time, PLEASE PLEASE don't judge-unless you've walked a mile in these hard-working mothers shoes. AND THOSE PENNIES MR. WELFARE SENDS DON'T FEED NOBODY...SIGNED A HARD-WORKING {NEVER BEEN ON WELFARE} SINGLE MOTHER RAISED & LIVING IN THE HOOD!!!
WELFARE TOOK THE PLACE OF THE HUSBAND AND IN SPANISH HARLEM WE CALLED IT WILFREDO NOT WELFARE. AND WHEN THE CASEWORKER CAME OVER TO THE HOUSE TO CHECK UP ON THINGS AND SEE HOW THEY WERE DOING, ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THEY ASKED WAS HAVE YOU SEEN YOUR HUSBAND LATELY, AND THE WOMAN SAY YES I SEE HIM EVERY TWO WEEKS. THEY WOULD GO DOWNSTAIRS TO CHECK THE MAIL BOX AND LORD BEHOLD THERE HE IS WILFREDO RIGHT ON TIME.
i met a woman who have 6 kids and her kids was always in the street and sitting outside her house until she will get home and i used to hate that. they didn't have a father in the house and they used to wear hand me downs. until i became friends with her son larry and i took them out to eat and brought them brand new clothes. then i married their mother and she had 4 for me i became the father of 10 kids and they are all grown up my kids love me i made sure they had everyting they ever wanted
@cnottagejr wow we need more men like u. i guess those kids can color u father, look up color me father by the winstons you gonna love it . it describes just as u said, good man . bless u
Love this song...I remember the fist time I heard it and wathced the movie. My b/f then was a DJ and he'd play it for me all the time. The message is clear and yes WELFARE did ruin the black household, but it also helped some single parent home to stay afloat.
This is the song...welfare took the place of the husband and the fathers(decietfully)
Times have changed ,it used to be a stigma attached even to those paper food stamps having to hold up the line ,tearing them out the booklet, people behind, you having an attitude ,like they are the ones doin the feeding ,now every store takes the EBT card and every landlord wants Section 8!!! Power to the people
when I hear this song I think about my father...yeah I miss him..but not as much as I thank him...shit I'm looking at his photo right now about to cry... but in a good way...Thank you daddy...
Do I remember the welfare days. Unfortunate situations happened in a lot of the families I grew up with back in the day. And mom wasn't lazy but the absence of an ass of a husband/father and then the spinal minegitis of a sibling prevented mom from working. But did she ever rebound in later years, worked and retired and living a peaceful retirement life. Not a lot of folks are lazy as it is perceived for those on welfare. Dad's eyes are not good to this day. Karma is something.
This should have been released as a single back in 74. Although this track got major play,Buddah really dropped the ball by not releasing this as a 45.On and On was released in May of 74 and 2 yrs later,Make Yours A Happy Home was released in May of 76. I also wonder if they will ever make this album a deluxe edition,to where they would release outtakes, other songs that would have made it in the movie.I ,for one would love to be the bug in a record label's ear for this.
Brings back so many memories. I remember the Social Worker coming to our house and having to hide our "nice" stuff and my mom getting jobs "on the side" just to make ends meet-even WITH Mr. Welfare. Raising 4 kids on her own. Wow. She was a soldier.
@screwface1011 I'm sorry but I strongly disagree with you there. Welfare will only ruin ANY family (not just the black family) if you allow it to. It is meant to be a stepping stone to doing better for yourself. Everyone needs some help sometime in their lives. Can you imagine how many babies would not eat without assistance programs? Now if you use it as your only source of income with no plans on finding your own way, well then you will be ruined.
@am2452 You are right ,but that system was a socio-economic plan against people of color, At a time when Afriacn Americam men were put out on the front line in combat in the military ,Just came out of a history of lynching, and the African American woman was left alone , Left to domestic employment with slave pay ,they needed the help back then ...
@am2452 I know I'm a little late with my reply, but damn you hit it right on the nose!!!I must stand in you presence,You are one of the few on here that has knowledge of what the hell is going on,and for that I aplaude .
funny how 36 years later this song still has relevance to today's society...it's so sad what the government funded oppressive welfare system has done to black families and how we have been bamboozled. read your holy bibles black folk... god intended black people to have healthy marriages, unfortunately, in today's america that is not the case the majority of the time.
Welfare ruined the black family over many generations. We must remember that you could not have a man in the house while receiving benefits. Millions of fatherless homes. A God Damn SHame.
@lessons1930 Now thats the RIGHTEOUS Truth!! Cats couldn't rap to a FoxyMommy wit kids cause "Tha MAN" "MightyWhitey" was gonna be taking HIS scratch! So they kept her StrungOut on their Bread, the SYSYTEM, and made her give up her MainMan or keep him in the dark! And he had to go find him a Hustle to keep his pockets fat! "RIGHT ON!!!"
@lessons1930 yes n there is always a strategy employed against us. thing is we need to think around the strategies and stop makin dope fiend moves consistently....
@lessons1930 I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS WHEN MY MOM HAD TO HIDE NOT JUST HER BOYFRIEND BUT APPLIANCES AS WELL IT WAS JUST LIKE THE MOVIE BUT ALTHOUGHT WELFARE STILL EXISIST MORE PPL ARE FINDING OUT ITS NOT WORTH IT A JOB IS BETTER, MEDICAID YES FOR THESE NEW BORNS AND YOUNG MOMS FOR A FEW YEARS UNTIL THE CHILD IS 5YRS OF AGE THEN MY COMPLETES HER PROGRAM THEY SET HER UP FOR THAT THE ONLY WAY THEY GET BENIFITS HERE IN NEW JERSEY . MY DAUGHTER HATES IT SHE'D RATHER WORK NO CHILD CARE FOR MY GRAND. NO
@lessons1930 Spot On About What Welfare Did To The Black Family A True Tragedy it Was Like A Hurricane Going Through The Black Community And The Damage it Done Was Horrific And Destructive And it Killed The Soul And Damaged The Spirit To Be Given Something Without Anything Anything Expected in Return Was Terrible!
@lessons1930 what a shame, i grew up living this my mom had 6 kid just like claudine, we had to hide shit when the worker came. i can so identify, but my mom was'nt no fool she still had jobs using 2 family member names so that put us over the hump rip mom
@lessons1930 Well if the Black man didn't leave his family, the Black woman wouldn't need to get on welfare. Easier to blame others for the lack of responsibility.
@rlw10101010 THE SAME PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WELFARE SYSTEM ARE THE SAME PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHY SO MANY BLACK MAN HAVE LEFT THE HOME. TRUTH BE TOLD AS I SAID EARLIER YOU COULDN'T EVEN HAVE A BLACK MAN IN THE HOME AND COLLECT BENEFITS. MANY BLACK MEN WERE PUT OUT OF THE HOME. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTINUE THE DIALOGUE. PEACE. THE BLACK MAN TOO IS A VICTIM AND I DON'T BLAME VICTIMS.
@lessons1930 you sure are right..I was blessed to have my mother and father stick together thru out my life. Most of the black's in the 70's,80's,90's till today have a different life...thanks for that wake up comment!!

This R&B song has always been one of my favorites from the 70's, has a smooth, funky groove, excellent musical arrangements, and of course, the legendary soulful vocals from this family group, a 70's R&B classic!!
"Your man buys you a bottle of wine, my man buys me a 6 pack".... love Claudine.

This R&B song has always been one of my favorites from the 70's, has a smooth, funky groove, excellent musical arrangements, and of course, the legendary soulful vocals from this family group, a 70's R&B classic!!

Good comment...but I'd like to say that this is more than just an R&B song...this was life. My mother was "Claudine" raising 4 boys by herself.
