  • This is a beautiful, poignant, tear jerking account of the Vietnam War. What really makes me sad when I watch this is the way soldiers were treated when they returned home, after having risked their lives in an apparently pointless war, and having seen friends die around them. How did people justify that?

  • It brought me right back, made me cry in rememberance.

  • It's so full of emotion. I can't stop listening to it.

  • No one can win a war they all loos.

  • 'Merica.

  • VOL TO GO 3 TIMES AT 18. IN HOSP IN DA NANG THEN OFF TO HOSP IN YOKO JAPAN THEN BACK TO NAM... AND WHAT I LEARNED WAS 1. OUR GOV ONLY USES OUR SOLDIERS, THEN DISCARDS THEM WHEN THEIR NO LONGER NEEDED. 2. ALL MY FRIENDS DIED FOR NOTHING. 3. NOBODY WINS IN A WAR 4. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WEAPONS WILL BE USED IN WW3, BUT IT WILL BE STICKS & STONES IN WW4 5. NOW IN MY OLD AGE, I'VE REALIZED THAT I HAVE TWO HANDS, ONE FOR HELPING MYSELF AND THE OTHER FOR HELPING OTHERS! 6.SADLY.. THE HIPPIES WERE RIGHT

  • awsome song

  • this buds for you..now take the word budweiser...spell it backwards..and add these words..Remember Every Solder In Every War Died Under Bravery..AMEN

  • To the one who write here that the viernam war was to proctect your land (usa). Do you guys really think it was to protect ur country? How did it protect your country? Did it helped south vietnam to not be captured by the comunists of nord vietnam? It didnt!!! I know americans still learn at school that the usa won the vietnam war. But is it true? How can i win, if i have to run away? If i have to let my allied get captured? If the goals that i had, (to not let the comunist capture the pro-amer

  • @MinimaleDigitale

First of all this wasn't a war to protect american Soil it was part of our campaign to protect capitalism throughout the world. Second of all nowhere in all of my schooling have i never heard any of my teachers teach us that we won the war. We with-drawled due to the peoples opionion of the war back in the states and due to many american losses.

  • @Png1lilBro This was an unjust war, which was declared based on lies. They lied to us, saying that they Vietcong attacked our Naval vessels - they have since admitted that that didn't happened. Yet the war was initiated anyways. Most wars are started over lies. All wars since Vietnam have been unjust.

  • how the hell did reading the giver lead you to believe war is good? the giver was a beautiful book. war brings pain and hurt to so many people!

  • @MeLuvsYuuu1347 if anything the giver said that war is bad o_0

  • this is a great song, thank you vets of nam and all wars, you did what your country asked for and so much more and I hope in my next deployment I can do the same.

  • @MeatPuppet56 Fuck your deployment dude! Quit the army and toke up! But this is a great song, i agree.

  • Just, incredible.

  • This played today at our school ceremony :)

God bless all the soldiers that died in war

  • well Mr Joel,,, you cashed in on that one!!

  • like this if u think this fits well for the skulduggery pleasant gang. (skulduggery, valkyrie, tanith, and ghastly)

  • it was 23 years ago I discharged from the Corp. To all of my brothers, and absent friends. I love you all still. May god bless you all, till we meet again.

especially to my friends, ""D'artagnan, Pothos, and Aramis." I Athos will pop a few back to you 3 tonight!

Cali was great in it's day!

  • War. War never changes. And neither do the fights on Youtube. War is horrible, but war is necessary.

  • @AlphaHotel66 not all wars are necessary

  • @AlphaHotel66 war is necessary? what the fuck kind of statement is that?

  • @flyingsteveee It's a true statement. It's a form of disagreement and as long as someone has something someone else wants, there will be war. It is sad, but necessary to Human life.

  • @Dannyboi12233 I honestly cannot tell if you're being serious or trying to make fun of all the fucking idiots who actually believe in what you just said which is fucking ridiculous because "a form of disagreement" does not at all sound like an okay reason for war. and "necessary for human life" is absolutely hypocritical because what Hitler did and what's going on in Darfur is called genocide - the annihilation of another another group of people (racial, religious, etc.). Dude, youre a dumbass

  • @flyingsteveee A world without War is a world like Lois Lowry's "The Giver". It is a sad world, devoid of emotion and free choice. And just figured I'd say this too, the Jews had it coming to them.

  • @Dannyboi12233 Oh man yeah of course, fuck the jews dude. They can eat my shit

  • Comment removed

  • @TheLondonIrish Dude really?? I'm one of the fighting irish too! You must hate the jews just as much as I do, huh?

  • @AlphaHotel66 guess you're American?

  • America has proven itself. Fall in line or what you have will be no more. To those who have lost, heavy with burden that shall be the thought of hope for freedom.

  • Timeless song.

  • War does not determine who is right...only who is left, but that certainly doesn't mean that those who die in battle didn't die honourably. To die selflessly for ones country is to die with honour, to die with your head held high and your arm in a final salute. To fight for freedom, for what you believe in, for your nation, for your ruler, for your people, as brothers...as friends...as soldiers. What makes a great era, is not a great leader...but a great people...

  • @007slaney

Theres nothing honorable about war or dieing, U really think its honorable when someonse body is being torn apart by shell piecies?

Its stupid to fight no matter what

  • @Zeddicus111 If it's to defend a country with a good reason I think it's right

  • @007slaney What is dishonorable is our government using our honorable intentions to fight their dishonorable wars, which Vietnam was - just as every war since.

  • Only if you believe in all those and not in the rights you gfave up to do so

  • @007slaney No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

  • @007slaney Wonderfully said

  • billy joel is just a tad more older than I am but he expiriee'enced'nced the nam war as a teenager I think... {I was 11 in 72}...

  • @tonan63 heh I mean 9

  • God bless all those who have killed foreign nationals overseas in the name of democracy!

  • @whatever888888888888

Untill there's a war in your country...are you still going to be so correct about everything when you face war?

Don't think so. Sure, war is a very hypocrite thing, but be glad there are people that are willing to sacrifice their lives so that you can live yours.

  • god bless them all

  • My dad is a soldier, , he was extremely strict and you better didn't cross him, like you'd expect from a sodlier. But still, behind that hard façade, there is a troubled man. It takes a lot from a person to be a soldier and the horrors he saw whilst being in Yugoslavia really changed him.

  • Is that sound at the begining a helicopter XD?

  • Bodies stacked as cork wood. It will never leave me. I was not a Marine. It made me want to Puke and God left me that day.

  • I can't wait to serve

  • Beautiful song.

  • If you're one of the people using this video as fuel for your political opinions, you can go to hell, it took BALLS to sign up for potential death, to protect your ungrateful arses, and now you're sat on the internet, on a tribute song, bitching about them protecting you.

I can't understand or accept that. And I'm British.

  • @PivDoodle9697 most people didnt sigh up, young mens names were put into a lottery and if you were picked you were going however many white educated people in univerisy darft dodge unfortuatlt blacks couldnt as they were still discriminated againist and there only univerist was Harlem

  • @PivDoodle9697 well why does everyone say''protect us'' amaricans were attacking vietnam, vietnam didnt attack america....

  • It strikes me that someone could make a really good MASH video with this song. (Yes, I know MASH was set in Korea, but it was *about* Vietnam.)

  • thank you my american brothers, and sisters!

.. i salute you! and also billy joel for writing such a masterpeice..

  • The U.S being involved in military conflicts always proves itself the most powerful superpower in the world In other words (Best military strength) God Bless the U.S.A - from a patriotic U.S Citizen No Need to argue It is the truth Maybe one day the U.S will be behind but that does not stop our enduring determination to become the most advanced nation in the world . Think about it There's always someone better than us Enough said .....
  • 4 people can go to hell

  • @kernalk97 But that's still amazing. I've never seen a video with such a high Like/Dislike ratio.

  • @ZeldainPark its true but than again it is billy jole would you expect anything else from his songs!!! lol

  • @kernalk97 and are

  • anyone who doesnt respect american soldiers are bitches

atleast they fought and died did any of you do that? i dont think so

so stop saying your the same thing your not so shut up

  • Awesome, touching song. Don't see any reason to start bitching.

  • Pointless comments threads 'r' us ...

  • people live and people die america isnt the only country that has killed and will kill

  • @jayshock7 ur a dick u know that?

  • My English teacher, Mr.Trescavage showed us this song, and me and my friend Jenna LOVE this song now...in a weird way

    ~Robyn~

  • My 5 year old grandson is now singing this song along with me and my daughter, and he know's it is about the hero's who fought for their country. I can only hope he grows to have the respect that I do for the brave souls who fought and died, and survived in such a terrible war. Absolutely fantastic song, sung with such passion by Billy Joel. Here's hoping my grandson wil share it with his children when he is older.

  • @Zabivelli Another thing, the "innocent" women and children that are being liked in Afghanistan. If an enemy soldiers is shotting at me, I'm going to shot back. I dont care if he's holding his "innocent" wife in front of him or not.

  • @Zabivelli No shit a lot of ppl have died because of Americans. In Vietnam, they would fire at us from houses. When you take fire, you return fire. If an "innocent person" got hit. Oh well it happens. Theyd send 8-year-old children with satchel charges strapped to their backs to run in and kill themselves along with American soldiers. As far as Afghanistan, we, in my opinion, were wrong to go in there. However, it had to be done. It wasn't because of Communism. You couldn't be more wrong.

  • @bakerspd right back at ya.

  • @zabivelli...eat shit and perish

  • Fuckin faggot americans, if you guys didn't fuckin invade afghanistan when the communists came, we wouldn't have had 24 years of war now. Just like you guys killed a lot of innocent nam people. Fuck democracy fuck communism, too many people has died because of you americans. And still I wont hate or harm an american. Just saying the facts.

  • @Zabivelli

How ignorant. I hate to read comments like yours, because it only proves how low the standards are now. The fact that you have fallen into the group of people who hate sickens me. You think that you know everything, but you're wrong. Maybe the US has done some awful things, but you cannot condemn us all for the acts of just a few. And just so you know, the fucking input of fuckin explitives does not fuckin make you sound any more fuckin intelligent. See what I mean?

  • @Zabivelli Italy had Mussolini. He killed over 300,000 innocent people. Germany had Hitler. He killed over 10,000,000 innocent people. Russia had Stalin. He killed in upwards of 20,000,000 innocent people.

How many innocent people have died because of America overall? (I'm gunna try not to lie) Maybe 250,000 - 500,000 over the past century. Not to mention that the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Australia,Turkey, Poland, Canada, and alot more countries are in Afganistan aswell. So fuck every country.

  • @MetalSights are you kidding? "Maybe 250,000 - 500,000 over the past century", the usaf killed over 300,000 people in the 2 atomic strikes on hiroshima and nagasaki plus the bombing of tokyo, as well as playing a major role in the killing of 600,000 german civilians in the same war, on the side of stalin i might add.

let's not forget the vietnam war which killed upwards of a million vietnamese civilians, and iraq which chalks up another estimated 600,000 civilian deaths.

  • @MetalSights so what's that so far? about 2.5 million civilians so far, between 5 and 10 times your estimate, and that is from the major wars of the 20th century with no mention of the CIA. ok so what's my point? well it isn't as extreme as you might think, it's just get your facts straight and don't think that your nation is so superior, because it isn't.

p.s i'm a brit, i have no problem with the u.s, and i get that we helped kill alot of the people i just mentioned, but i'm not a nationalist

  • @MetalSights

wow man your numbers are not correct about germany and russia, german basterds killed 6,5mil russia not more then 3mil and about this other countries i dont know. but the reason i said that shit about americans because usa wants to always be the big player and american governmant are always telling lies. the only thing you guys did good is killing Bin laden and yes im a muslim, he also killed alot of innocent people. and by the way germany did pay alot for their mistakes

  • @Zabivelli Fag

  • @Tylerbuehler62

so your father is a homo

  • this is a beautiful song!

  • ftw.

  • this song tells the raw truth about the vietnam war which was very shunned by the american poeple in the 60's this song is so true but not a tribute song. R.I.P soldiers that died in the vietnam war Semper Fi

  • @iTzProDIGYx It wasn't shunned by "the American people". It was shunned by the same leftwing jackasses who now go all kissy kissy with the jihadis. And the dipshits in the media.

  • @higuma75 hahahah true dat fuking communists

  • R.I.P everyone was died in Vietnam

  • I pay my respect to the soldiers who protect us every day.

    Labor day is pointless.

We should ALWAYS remember the soldiers.

  • As an autist, this was the first song wich really made me understand how desperate some of these soldiers must have been.

    Respect.

  • amazing tune, not an amazing series of events which has shown the worst and best qualities of man.

  • GRANDE

  • Bless those who fight for the freedom of their people. And by that I mean the soldiers. The old men declare the wars, but it always will be the young fighting in it.

  • %$What is Semper FI?

  • @trinityproductionzz It is a abbreviated form of Semper Fidelis Latin for always faithful & the motto of the USMC

  • This is the first time I've ever heard this sad song. Bloody communism!

  • This is a great song. I am also a Veteran 6 years in the Corps and 14 in the Army. I did a tour in Beirut in 82-83 and was there a year before the bombing. My father was also a Marine and served 23 years and in 3 wars. He was in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. Like my father we both did our boot camp at Parris Island he in 1940 and mine in 1977. So this song means a lot to me. So to all Marines past, present and future Semper Fi!!!!!!!

  • The americans used to hate this song because, it critisised the bad behaviour of the american soldiers. And because of the fact that Billy sings we al go down together and he didnt go to war. For me its is a beautyful song it realy puts down how much pain and missery this war has caused.

  • @FaithStarCraftHD That's the thing. Billy didn't go there. He was just another leftist bashing the war. The same leftists, who celebrated the Soviets invasion of A-stan, btw.

It's funny. Most of the soldiers, sailors and marines in Nam were volunteers (2/3). Average age of men killed: 23.1 years. 85% of Vietnam Veterans made successful transitions to civilian life. Vietnam Veterans are less likely to be in prison. And Charlie never held the night. Not after Tet. After Tet Charlie was done.

  • i will never forget about war how about you ?

  • @ikillsilent War is eternal. Only mankind is finite.

War! What is it good for? Absolutely... EVERYTHING!

  • I've never been a soldier but I think the emotions are dripping from this song!

  • This song is really beautifull. I'm not a Billy big fan. My brother used to listen to when I was young .... and best songs lasted in me ....this will last forever 'cause it touches secret chords and tells it how it really is ...well it tells how I really love it should be ....ALL TOGETHER ! I'm only 35 ...but promise I will never forget !

  • me dads a big fan of billy joel and i used to listen to this when i was young

and then we lost the cd and i decided to look it up and found it but ive been looking for it forever!!! Brings back so many memories of me n me dad!!!

    great song!!!!!!!!

  • Awwwww. Such a sad song...normally I don't like sad songs, but this is epic. :)

  • I am a Vietnam vet. Some lines of the song are right on and other lines are so random that it kind of reminds me of Adam Sander's Thanksgiving song.

  • My Dad's Been a Marine for more than 20 years and still serves his country behind the desk./ Semper fI Forever!

  • Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

  • One of my fav Billy Joel songs

    god bless everyones posts

  • my father was a USMC Vietnam Vet, two tours, purple heart, he passed earlier this year, semper fi dad miss you

  • Semper FI :*-(

    He was a Hero

  • im singing this in choir for rememberance day ! :)

    such a beautiful song .. <3

  • God bless everyone who has ever put on a uniform to defend me and my family. It's not for everyone and I, for one, know I did not have the "right stuff" to serve. Again, God Bless everyone in uniform. True Americans are all proud of you.

  • @stevepwood As if all heroes in uniforms are American. Pathetic!

  • @bartdereu How did you get that from my comment? I never stated that either all heroes are American or that all heroes in uniform are American or all heroes wear uniforms. I stand by my comment and your attempt to interpret them are pathetic!

  • @bartdereu I live in America and was speaking to US soldiers....go trolling somewhere else.

  • @stevepwood I had the honour to work in NYC for some years and my kids swore allegiance to the flag and why not? I love and respect this song, which has a deep meaning outside of any specific action of the brave young men of any particular country in any conflict through history. We all have our unknown soldiers and airmen and we should never allow them to beforgotten.

  • @stevepwood

They put that uniform on to kill other people who had families too! Some education would've defended your family in so many more ways. And this goes to show again what this idiotic "god" crap can lead too. And that is also what this song is about! Great art but your comment underneath it is totally out of place and almost insulting even to people who DO have an education and base their being human on ... well ... being human!

  • @stevepwood

This song is actually about how wrong it is to go into any war in the name of whatever organised religion or made up beliefs (dixit the artist who MADE this, a convinced atheist btw). Education goes a long way. Get some! As does being human. Become one!

  • @stevepwood I respect and am gratefull of your first point. Hate you had to end with the comment 'True Americans',We are sometines wrong..visciously,violently and fatally. Not all whom serve are saints and I fall into the not saint caregory.

  • @stevepwood you spoke words of truth I respect that. America is great!

  • @stevepwood

Because only Americans are fit to be proud of soldiers...?

Yeah, I know this song is about the Vietnam war, but there are more countries in the world that are proud there are people that have died for our freedom, not just the U.S. of f'kn A

  • @McBethklok He said he was proud on everyone in uniform, not just Americans. Learn to read.

  • @ACDCRenca

"True Americans are all proud of you"

My response: Because only Americans are fit to be proud of soldiers...?"

    So,...Learn to read yourself

  • @stevepwood Thank you. Our pleasure. God bless.

  • Who the hell disliked this video??

  • @SheepM3ister hippies

  • I KNOW THIS IS A SERIOUS SONG BUT I CAN'T LISTEN TO IT WITHOUT LAUGHING BECAUSE OF THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE SKIT WITH FERREL

  • such a great song

  • ...And we learned fast to travel light,

Our arms were heavy but our bellies were tight.

And we held on to each other,

    Like brother to brother,

We promised our lovers we'd write.

And the night seemed to last as long as six weeks...

    Wellcome home form Malawi, honey

  • SEMPER FI AND EWW RAH from my gut to gods ears.

  • OMG!!! My social studies teacher was playing this song for the class today. It was about the vietnam war and all the peolple that had fought for it. Everyone in the class thought this was very sad. And so did I.:'(

  • @Creativepup702 same with my teacher

  • @Creativepup702 me too

  • @Creativepup702 i wish my teacher would. but the school year's about over, so yeah :P

    great song though.

  • @deadphoenix223 to tell you the truth both the song and the war are pretty depressing.

  • @Creativepup702 it's depressing, i agree, but it's still wonderfully put together.

  • Man, where is the music for those of us who served in Iraq. I look back to this music when I'm feeling down, it reminds me that I'm not alone.

  • humans aren't meant to live in groups, in every group of humans there is anger, rage and war

  • @ikbennl Well, we are pack animals. We would never survive otherwise. Our flaw is that we would rather fight then work things out.

  • @Gr3g251 Wtf is the difference between the downfall and the end of? There is none! A downfall is a defeat, and if something is still very common, it's obviously not completely defeated. Fuckface :P

  • @lucas11723 Well, the downfall technically means the sudden loss of wealth, rank, or reputation. The end would mean the complete elimination of. :)

  • We listened to this song in social studies....I just had to get it on itunes.....even though it makes me kinda sad....

We left in plastic as numbered corpses......that's the line that gets me...

  • @Gr3g251 You're fucking stupid. Vietnam is still communist. So are a lot of places.

  • 22 weeks...

  • But war... war never changes.

  • omg! I love that song so much!

  • @Gr3g251 I never said war was pointless or preventable. It's just that Vietnam was completely unnecessary. Had all of Vietnam fallen to Communism, it wouldn't have made a difference. At all. Communism's structural faults would have caused its own self-destruction, and the regime we were trying to prop up in Vietnam was unjust and colonial, which is against what we give lip-service to as 'freedom'. Nam was nothing but a giant grave for our boys and our national spirit. Only honest answer.

  • Despite how you lean politically the music is wonderful. It evokes feelings of how the kids must have felt over in Nam. It also tells a story and is a piece of history however grim.

  • @Gr3g251 Vietnam had nothing to do with American freedom. We were doing a moronic favor for a colonial power. Utterly retarded, and I'm ashamed that America failed its noble veterans so gravely.

  • Oh, to be young an ignorant again. I'm glad i was born back in '52!

  • remember charlie,

    remember baker,

    what about bravo. lol

    DOMINATION

  • uhm he ment it as persons correct me if i am wrong but the line's after it say: They left their childhood. so i think he means people

  • Comment removed

  • I used to hear it with my exboyfriend... from that time I like Billy Joel.

I will always love you for the everything what you show me in this life...

  • Pro- War...Anti-War, doesn't matter. Simply one of the best songs ever made!..

  • i cried when i first heard this song

  • My mom would play this in a Billy Joel songbook for me on the piano when I was growing up. I know it by myself now, it's still just as fantastic when I first heard it.

  • When I was just a young boy, this song made me be filled with a infinite spirit of desolation, a longing for lonely death in some distant country. This was long time before I knew much the history of this tragic war. This was not a war of heroes and patriotism, ; it was a war of barbarism and loss. If anyone was the true heroes of this war, it was the Vietnamese people who sacrificed so much to resist submitting to the will of any imperialism, French or American.

  • "a longing for lonely death in some distant country".....I always felt that way when I listen to "Minstral Boy", it was played at the end of Black Hawk Down. We all die alone, but it sure helps the family to know where you are. Peace

  • While I absolutely agree with you, none of that changes the fact that extremely young men were drafted and sent to this war against their will. Despite the fact that it was a horrific and unnecessarily violent war we can still honor the fact that these men were out there fighting in what must have been terrifying circumstances. The soldiers have nothing to do with the politics of it all and young men losing their lives for a pointless endeavor is just as tragic as a dying a hero's death.

  • The true heros of this war were the brave soldiers from America who died horrendous deaths in a godforsaken land. They didnt know what the war was about, but not many people did. Anybody who calls the VC and NVA soldiers heros are liberals who dont give a damn about America

  • I think 4:08 may change your mind.

  • "and who was wrong and who was right? It didn't matter in the thick of the fight" The Vietnamese people were sacrificed by their own tyranical government. Oh yes, we will all go down together!

  • i see where you're coming from but our boys still fought and died with honor

  • dont demonise the american soliers forced agaist their will to fight in that war though.
