Fair question. The thing is that Indian songs tend to have a different tone, and pitch. They're much more vocal, and lean toward the classical side. Singing classical songs is EXTREMELY HARD. You need amazing control over your voice in order to reach that pitch. Anyone can open their voice and scream, and sound "emotional" but it's not as sweet. There is no melody to it. Singing high enables the singer to have that melodic, soft voice, which is what you want.

I can understand them wanting to sound sweet, but not singing high doesn't mean just opening your mouth and screaming either. And saying there is no melody to lower toned voices is a bit unfair to those who can't sing as high. I understand singing soprano every once in a while, because it does generate an agnelic effect. but singing tenor also generates a warmth, a soothing that a shrill soprano can't bring. You don't want people cringing when you sing. Look up Celtic Woman. They sing classical Irish, and they also have amazingly high melodic voices. Their voices are often said to be angelic. :D

Songs in general reflect a specific feeling and mood of the writer/singer. A simple thing that you have to keep in mind is that females have higher pitch then men so it suits them to sing high. Additionally, happy songs tend to have more of the higher notes than lower notes whereas the composition of sad songs will consist of predominantly lower notes. Best compositions are the ones that incorporate a wide range of notes with expressions added by the singers. Low notes:3:08-3:17 and then high.

But that's not answering my question. on some songs, the woman's voice is so high it sounds unnatural almost, like a tape being put into fast forward. Ive never heard any other cultures women sing so high except for india's, so thats why i ask. the women always sing soprano. even in sad songs such as hum dil de chuke sanam, the voice is still real high. so i was wondering just why this is...

Yeah ive heard what youre saying, i think traditionally, with carnatic music and such women are generally just expecte to sing at that pitch, its carnatic music. If you listen to recent stuff its not so high, for example sunidhi chauhan wouldnt be your traditional carnatic singer wiht the high voice, try searching for her! thats what i reckon anyway...
