We used to cruise around in our GTOs back in the early 70s listening to this song and faster than the speed of life and ride with me, some of the best driving and riding songs ever made. Born to be wild is the iconic motorcycle song of all time but ride with me should be next to it and for cruising the streets in the old days faster than the speed of life was our song we alwasys said it was faster than the speed of light. There just isnt any talent in music nowadays like back in the 60s.
My Dad has turned me on to Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, BTO, and dozens of other great bands from the 70s and 80s. Now that I am learning to play guitar and other instruments, he explains how these great songs are blues-based rock. Of course, he also explains the theory and physics of sound waves, frequency, etc., etc. He's a walking encyclopedia of music information. He also has some great pictures of these old groups in song books he bought when he was a kid.
Another overlooked classic that the radio stations ignore. This is much better to me than Magic Carpet Ride. That song and Born to be Wild are the only two Steppenwolf tunes the radio programmers want us to hear, while everything else they've done gets pushed aside.
I came across your comment 10 months after the fact but I gotta say I agree completely. The radio also wore out "Sookie Sookie", sorry to say. It was okay for it's time but didn't have the shelf life of the true classics. (IMO). Who Needs Ya will never get old.
Thanks for this music groover! I've got about 6 steppenwolf lps in a box in the basement. but I'd have to get a new setup to listen to it again. digital, plugs that don't match & the rest...
John Kay, the led singer and frontman, was actually born Joachim Krauledat in 1944 in what was East Germany. Grew up and learned English. Moved to Canada and then formed band made up of Canadian and LA area musicians.
Hope that helps. I have always liked their stuff. Listen to his life performance of Snowblind Friend-just awesome. Here on the Tube.
What a great freakin' song. Steppenwolf is probably the most underrated US band ever. John Kay, Larry Byrom, Goldie McJohn, Edmonton. That my friends is an all star lineup anyway you cut it.
@joemysteryguitar I totally agree, except they're not exactly a US band. They're all from Canada except for John Kay (nee Joachim Krauledat) who came from East Germany when there was one.
i totally love it

Superb... Put together an old muscle car for show. This tune plays over and over at showtime. Totally embodies my generation. Thanks for the tune.
