I was a conductor for 11 years, and sadly, this conductor is as bad as me. The pianist deserves better. Must be tough to bring your "A" game with what's coming at you acoustically and visually from the left side. Ouch! I hope this is a community volunteer orchestra, in which case, I applaud the effort. Otherwise, (a) step one: learn the notes; (b) step two: practice until you can play in tune; (c) get a conductor who's not self-taught. Difficult piece and you made it sound like it.
man.... you should of performed this either by yourself or with an accompanist if a different orchestra was out of the question. YOUR playing is incredible sir, but God that orchestra was not even half way to your level
I've got a joke: So there's this piano concerto one night and during the performance some guy in the crowd yells: ¡that violinist in the front row is an idiot!, the director then stops the performance and says: People please, know that I always demand respect for every person playing under my direction and I will not tolerate insults of any kind....Who called this bastard a violinist?
The problem with this guy is that he does not voice anything and it`s hard to tell melody from the accompaniment , foreground from background , everything is equally important in his playing . It`s especially annoying in Rachmaninoff who wrote so many notes that it`s pointless to sell them all for about the same price.
Totally agree about orchestra. It makes me sick. They should be put IN JAIL. Pianist is not that bad I think, at least he doesn't hide behind speed and brutality.
Oh wow, this orchestra is absolutely horrible. The soloist, like everyone else said already, is quite good but the orchestra is embarrassing. The first violins weren't even in tune nor together in the opening . . . not exactly a tough passage area either. I in all seriousness know public high school orchestras who could better accompaniment.
its all far to tame. the opening was far too dreary, its meant to captivate the listener not put them to sleep! the tempo should be quicker and the pianist should forget his delicate and safe approach in exchange for a more robust and dramatic one. also the horns needed to wake up and find some volume, they were rather pathetic to be frank. the potential is there but it hasnt been reached in this performance...
I agree with everyone here: the pianist executes the piece wonderfully! And for his age has a great control of dynamics and expression, however; the orchestra needs to be reviewed. They appear... lazy. As if they haven't played the piece properly before.
And this is also one of the most underrated pieces of music ever. Nobody knows about it, yet it's extremely good.
"sunshinegudasz" I totally agree with you. And this piece is not played more often because it is so awfully difficult that even some virtuosos don't want to try, but gorgeous music, very underrated. A pity of that orchestra.
i think this concerto deserves better credit as a piece of music -- rach's 2nd 3rd and 4th are his most famous.. but i just think the 1st is a piece of genius.. and its definitely one of my most favorite pieces of all time
Come on, guys, cut them some slack. It's not like they're doing bad. Stop acting like they're trying to prove something. They aren't saying they're the best in the country or something. Both the pianist and the orchestra did great, and all you guys are doing is discouraging. It's annoying as hell.
Heee, mi ruso-hispano apasionado! :) Lo mediocre aun no es lo horroroso, cada quien toca como puede. Escucha a una tal Kim tocando piezas de Rach aqui en youtube... a ver que diras :)
I'm afraid the rather good piano playing is spoilt by the horrendous orchestra! Right from the beginning the tuning is awful, and the brass at the orchestra entry at about 24sec sounds like a beginner! A shame.
Nice work. This is the first time realise a vague resemblance between this concerto and (of all things!) the Grieg concerto,, Well played mr Van vlear! Where are your teachers from,, ?
Nice! Really good job, especially for a smaller chamber type of orchestra too. Yes the orchestra didn't seem tuned to the piano but the video quality helped in that too. Didn't know Tom Cruise could play the piano!

Actually I don't think the pianist is that great either, he's much too slow when it should be fast (like in the beginning)

@naynonsense Yeah, that piece was pretty hard. If I could go back to my 17-yr-old self I would kick his butt and make him practice 15 hours a day.

if i were the conductor, i would've use their violins to smash their heads real hard. terrible violinists with terrible synchronization.

music is great, i just love this (and 2nd, 3rd) concert, but this performance is too slow...and recording is realy not good.
You should listen to Krystian Zimmerman's performance of this concert:)

My piano teacher once described my playing as "Unbearably Slow..."
... ... ...
And last time I checked the strings were supposed to play in tune... And they were supposed to play at the same time...

The orchestra is horrifying. They have ruined the performance T_T
But the pianist on the other hand, is astounding. How unfortunate that he has to play with this orchestra. he definitely deserves better.

Both orchestra and pianist are awful and lack cohesion. The pianist missed the rhythm on the first two chords.
