Actually by far the largest contingent of troops killed on the allied side in the Somme were English under the suicidal strategy of General 'Butcher' Haig. (Who was Scottish). If you hate the English so much then stop playing their tunes (Monk who wrote this music was English) as a symbol of Scottish nationalism. I know we all love aud lang syne but we dont post it on You tube in an English Nationalist video
Think your false there. Whats the point of posting nonsense when in the digital age we all have access to the facts.
"Abide with Me" is a Christian hymn by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte, most often sung to William Henry Monk's tune "Eventide." - Wikipedia. William Monk was English. So as I said, its an English tune (the performance of it on this video is not sung so there is nothing in it by Lyte at all).
In Operation Michael (the German Assault in March 1918) the 5th Army crumbled (23-25/3). 3rd Div AIF moved into the line (26-27/3) and relieved the 35 Div UK and met up with the 9th Div Scot. (as did the 4th Div AIF). The 9 Div (Scot) decided to stay once reinforced. (Cit. Monash: The Outsider who Won a War, pp.317-319). The Canadian Corps and the Australian Corps struck the decisive blow on 8th August 1918 (Ludendorf's "Black Day") at Amiens.
This is a song that should bring all brothers together. I am a Scotsman living in the South of England, with men I served with. Proud to call tem my friends
@hawickman Scots stood at the Somme in 1918 while the British retreated in disarray. When the Australian's arrived, many of the Scots remained (even units that were reduced dramatically) in the line with the Australian Divisions. The Scots, Canadians and Australians were the only real quality troops left on either side by 1918.
@myfilms2010 Nope, not according to history. Really not in getting into a debate on it, but the fact is that the Scottish Regiments stood in the wake of Operation Michael, other regiments did not (I'll not name them). Why they faltered may be due to inadequate training, poor morale, crap leadership, who knows (who is interested for a start?). It isn't racist to recognise good discipline, staunch defence and effective leadership (and ignore t'other is it)? 2c
I've always bought one and always will, I'm Scottisg Catholic and proud and my maternal grandad fought at 2nd Ypres WW1, and paternal in Burma WW2. Celtic is a Scottish club and I'm proud Scot, there are others, but like the vocal minority at Rangers ours are a disgrace too
Scots have such an appreciation and pride in their culture and in their heritage...and justifiably so. We Americans sometimes don't show that ame appreciation not only for who we are, but where we have come from...we have much to be proud of...and much to tip a hat in honor of some very influential Scotsman in our history, and Scotland itself. Would we have the Declaration of Independence had it not been for the Scots and the Declaration of Arbroath?
@ghampton106 The Fathers of Independence had made the Declration of Independence from the Iroquos confedericy and their laws. It was actually Ben Franklin who had drafted the declration after meeting members of the Iroquos Confedericy and being impressed with their laws, he used some if not all of their laws (With the exmption of women and other minoritys) and drafted them into the American Declration of Independence.
But I'm German. And my ancestors are German. And my family can be tracked down to the Revolution. So how do the Scots affect my heritage, if I'm German?
Not all Americans come from British heritage, or any other heritage from the Isles.
@ccpickre I only picked up on parts of that convo, but...The English are the result of German actions. The most "British" would be the Welsh, the charming bastards.
