  • its amazing to think half of these soldiers have probably lost thier lifes fighting terror for ours....... god bless every 1 of them

  • Magnificent! The tune, the accompanying video - Spot on ! Thankyou

  • Actually by far the largest contingent of troops killed on the allied side in the Somme were English under the suicidal strategy of General 'Butcher' Haig. (Who was Scottish). If you hate the English so much then stop playing their tunes (Monk who wrote this music was English) as a symbol of Scottish nationalism. I know we all love aud lang syne but we dont post it on You tube in an English Nationalist video

  • @fairplaynationalist2 Henry Francis Lyte, who wrote this tue, was Scottish, born in Ednam, Scotland.

  • @truefalse

Think your false there. Whats the point of posting nonsense when in the digital age we all have access to the facts.

"Abide with Me" is a Christian hymn by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte, most often sung to William Henry Monk's tune "Eventide." - Wikipedia. William Monk was English. So as I said, its an English tune (the performance of it on this video is not sung so there is nothing in it by Lyte at all).

  • This is absolutely beautiful.

  • Nice musical arrangement. The video is a little cringe-inducing - spoken from the perspective of a piper.

  • In Operation Michael (the German Assault in March 1918) the 5th Army crumbled (23-25/3). 3rd Div AIF moved into the line (26-27/3) and relieved the 35 Div UK and met up with the 9th Div Scot. (as did the 4th Div AIF). The 9 Div (Scot) decided to stay once reinforced. (Cit. Monash: The Outsider who Won a War, pp.317-319). The Canadian Corps and the Australian Corps struck the decisive blow on 8th August 1918 (Ludendorf's "Black Day") at Amiens.

  • gotta say scottish music is by far the most patriotic in the world!!

  • Beautiful and emotional

  • Brings tears to your eyes

  • the best pipe band in the world in my opinion

  • @username1me

    AGREED.

  • Our culture has no borders there is a wee bit of Scotland in many nations

  • Beautiful

  • This is a song that should bring all brothers together. I am a Scotsman living in the South of England, with men I served with. Proud to call tem my friends

  • We sing this hymn every ANZAC day here in New Zealand.

  • @rodnrach God bless the ANZAC. Without them we probably would have had to surrender. Proud Scotsman

  • @hawickman Scots stood at the Somme in 1918 while the British retreated in disarray. When the Australian's arrived, many of the Scots remained (even units that were reduced dramatically) in the line with the Australian Divisions. The Scots, Canadians and Australians were the only real quality troops left on either side by 1918.

  • @aarontsmall1975

    Not quite

But at Gallipoli, The Kiwi;s took Chunuck Bair, Were relieved by the English who promptly lost the position

  • @aarontsmall1975 Because the Scot's arent British..............?

  • @Bluesteel750 Hey, we're all people: I'm an Aussie. For fuck's sake! Nice song; brings us together;enough said.

  • @Bluesteel750 they are

  • @aarontsmall1975 what? scots are brits

    also that's bollocks

  • @MrSteele92 they are and i want scotland part of the union!

  • @aarontsmall1975 i dont know where you got that from we stood with our english brother's in pride so get lost

  • @myfilms2010 Nope, not according to history. Really not in getting into a debate on it, but the fact is that the Scottish Regiments stood in the wake of Operation Michael, other regiments did not (I'll not name them). Why they faltered may be due to inadequate training, poor morale, crap leadership, who knows (who is interested for a start?). It isn't racist to recognise good discipline, staunch defence and effective leadership (and ignore t'other is it)? 2c

  • I am of scot blood love all the music

  • I'm an American by birth, Scoth-Irish by Blood..U.S. Army Infantry by choice,,How do I join up with these boys??

go on yer sel ma sun

  • Beautiful! Long live the Scots...

  • Shame it was not the full version.

  • rip all those fallen men of th 3rd batt the rifles

  • Totally agree buddy, and I'm a celtic fan who feels not enough of us speak up, RIP all our guys!

  • To be honest thats because there's not many of you.I don't know one single Celtic fan who wears a poppy around Remembrance Sunday.

But fair play to you though

  • I've always bought one and always will, I'm Scottisg Catholic and proud and my maternal grandad fought at 2nd Ypres WW1, and paternal in Burma WW2. Celtic is a Scottish club and I'm proud Scot, there are others, but like the vocal minority at Rangers ours are a disgrace too

  • Though not much of a believer, if at all, I will be singing this hymn to myself on my deathbed.

  • @AnotherCuppaCoffee i am not much of a believer either but my father was KIA and on hes funeral did a uncle played this song in the church

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • ghamton 106 Thank you for your statement.

  • Annie - no need to thank me for what is true. Slainte' Mhath

  • Scots have such an appreciation and pride in their culture and in their heritage...and justifiably so. We Americans sometimes don't show that ame appreciation not only for who we are, but where we have come from...we have much to be proud of...and much to tip a hat in honor of some very influential Scotsman in our history, and Scotland itself. Would we have the Declaration of Independence had it not been for the Scots and the Declaration of Arbroath?

  • i am glad you think this way i also think americans should appreiciate their heritage more. i am so proud to be candian and to be of scottish decent

  • @ghampton106

As you say - the Scots have much to be proud of - a wonderful country, with wonderful people and an amazing intellectual & cultural heritage.

  • @ghampton106 The Fathers of Independence had made the Declration of Independence from the Iroquos confedericy and their laws. It was actually Ben Franklin who had drafted the declration after meeting members of the Iroquos Confedericy and being impressed with their laws, he used some if not all of their laws (With the exmption of women and other minoritys) and drafted them into the American Declration of Independence.

  • @ghampton106 Well said, sir. Well said......I have no words....God Bless

  • @ghampton106

But I'm German. And my ancestors are German. And my family can be tracked down to the Revolution. So how do the Scots affect my heritage, if I'm German?

Not all Americans come from British heritage, or any other heritage from the Isles.

  • @ccpickre I only picked up on parts of that convo, but...The English are the result of German actions. The most "British" would be the Welsh, the charming bastards.

  • @ghampton106 A man who knows his history. Everybody goes on about the Magna Carta. Means nothing. As long as 100 of us remain we will dedicate ourselves to freedom

  • @ghampton106 I agree, but all to ogten American Pride is cast as being devisive and racist, et so we are losing our heritage in the name of PC

  • @SaginawGS and yet things descreibed as being racist, dont fit the definition of racism Eh?. the only PC i have is what i use to reach youtube. to hell with the other one

  • @ghampton106 And thank you USA for accepting so many of her sons and daughters as your own! I wish you well.

  • Muito belo e emocionante

  • Simply amazing,love it!

  • What are those things they are blowing in.? I've never seen one before...

  • Gorgeous music, lads. Proud of you all.

  • long ago, the idea was to battle the Romans in valley rifts, stark naked and body painted blue and scare the crap out of those Italians & Germans with the pipes. So....was it the pipes that scared them away or what they beheld a bit lower down?

  • great video. took my breath away. It really captures the beauty and inspiration of the bagpipes, plus the gentleman piper

  • May God bless those of true heart and those would include (amongst others) the "Royal Scots Dragoons Guard" ! May the pipes cleanse. . .

I am doing the same, only I am keeping the tradition of Scottish Fiddling alive. It's always awesome to meet someone who wants to keep a tradition alive and well!

  • There is nothing like pipes and it makes you feel proud to be Scottish. It reminds me of being at the Edinburgh Tattoo and a piper standing on the ramparts playing a lament. It gave me goose bumps.

  • The music is great, but I think you're trying too hard to make great videos for it. I hate the suger-sweet typical American video kind, that makes everybody look like a great hero. Make some more Scottish videos!

  • Hello to all you Scots out there its retro fan here the above video clip is fantastic That should go to the top of the album charts when it hits the shops in December

For those who don't Know that is the Pipes & drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards & the Album is called Spirit of the Glen Journey I would urge you all to go & buy it because all proceeds from the album go to service Charities and there is a chance it could be at the top for Christmas 2008

    All the best from

    Retrofan1

  • This was apropos having this sent to me on Veterans Day in America as I am a USA combat vet and brother in arms with these mighty men.

  • Awesome video.

They had a Scottish theme beach wedding a couple weeks ago with bagpipe players and we could hear it all the way across Pacific Coast Hwy - it was great.

Thanks Mackie for the lyrics - what a true and comforting hymn that is.
