its not a REAL GPS, it uses the the location of service towers to find your position, which is why its not terribly accurate.

u dont need 3g to use gps, but, if u dont have 3g, u wont be able to download the google maps, so u will not see any map, and seeing the blue ball mooving in a full white scren, the best way will be, to download a full map into iphone, then u wont need internet conection, but for now, u only can use google maps.

The iphone has not any incorporated gps.... you are a bit unprepared... It uses the internet and the radio signals to establish your curent location. If anyone thought that the iphone has an incorprated gps than ...srrry for him.... It is still very unstable and slow....but there will come some cool apps. like IGO with a gps receiver that you can connect to you^re iphone...and that will be fast and reliable.

You guys on this post are all fucking retarded. Yes, iPhone has a very mundane GPS. It's actually A-GPS. And yes you need 3G to use it, to get simple directions I don't think so, but to actually see where you are on the map in real time you do. Which also means you need an unlimited data plan from AT&T. Also if your thinking about buying an "unlocked" 3G iPhone to use on T-Mobile, You can forget it. T-Mobile has no 3G network, and won't for a while.

Actually, i believe the GPS chip (builted in) supports itself without any charge, but remember that google maps and google earth do charges on your data transfer plan, unless you pay for the unlimited one, or theres a wi.fe signal.

it's taking forever because you are inside. gps doesn't work well indoors. it goes black because you have your phone on auto lock. dims because it is ready to lock. in some areas the gps might not be great but I live in Los Angeles and it works perfectly. and you dont need 3g for gps
