to markmauds, i'm probably spelling it wrong, but it's called a simsemiya from the Ismailayan part of Egypt. it's possible the instrument is used in other parts of the middle east too. at least from what i know anyway! hope it helps...
i was mainly referring to the one guy on the right who's barely clapping and doesn't seem that into it. unfortunately i can't remember what our guide said his songs were protesting, but apparently at one point he was jailed because of them.

Is he playing a Lyre of some sort? it looks like he's used a big pan to amplify the strings!
