My finger generally slides off the string without catching while trying pull offs. Should I use my nail or try to get my finger behind the string a little more? I always wash my hands before playing maybe they are too smooth.
The 5 and 4 are in time together. Since your striking the 6th fret and pulling off to the 4th fret with only one string then what do you do about the other string on the 5th fret? Do you hit the B string 5th fret as soon as you pull off the 6th fret to the 4th fret on the G string? Does anyone understand what the hell I'm trying to ask or say?
Yeah I've been practicing on some Jimi Hendrix riffs. It's suppose to look like this:
E
B 5
G 6p4
I'm assuming you strike the G string and as soon as you pull off to the 4th fret you simultaneously strike the B string 5th fret with your middle finger. Somewhat giving the sound of the pull off a more distinct sound.
He also does this:
E
B 5
G 4h6p4
Thanks for trying to help me out; I'm just going to keep practicing it the way I have been. Jimi is just nuts!
You should be 'hammering-on' the higher note with enough force that it makes a sound on its own without picking the string. That's a lot of force for one finger, but as you get used to it, it gets easier. Having said that, if you have tons of distortion on your sound, it's a lot easier, so start with lots and lots of distortion.
I have a question. When I do hammer ons and pull offs, the sound stops when I either take my finger off the neck or put my finger on the higher note. It's not on the amp right now (it's a little late)is that the problem or am I doing something wrong? I strumed the chord as hard as I could too. Well, I'm sure I'll figure it out ^.^
one have to do a little downward movement tu get the sound. if u do not do it, you just mute the string and you do not get a sound , as you already explained.
Just want to say, thanks. I have been playing (if you can call it that) guitar for 19 years. No lessons, erm... well rather, until now. And you teaching style is a perfect addition to my musical and guitar curriculum. I am curious if you plan on putting your whole collection out on some type of DVD.
Start with lots of distortion - it'll help you how to get the basics done and you can slowly lower the distortion level. However, your clean hammer/pull-offs will almost always be weaker than on distortion so that's normal.
when doing a hammer-on or pull-off "always" strike the first note then either pull-off or hammer-on?
Bullshit, in true Legato you never strike the strings with your picking hand you simply hammer-on and pull-off to make all sounds, this technique he is showing is 1/2 legato, using high gain to sustain the sounds, its a bad idea to start out all wrong like that, your cheating yourself, practice true legato on an acoustic guitar, then try this, its childs play.
when i do my hammer-ons and pull-offs the note doesnt maintain its volume like when you do it.... instead, the sound dies out, wtf am i doing wrong? are my finger too weak and are not coming out onto the string with enough force?
Adding lots of distortion or saturating it (putting high gain at low volume if your amp has gain for distortion and volume knobs separately) usually helps a lot. Doing hammer-ons and pull-offs are definitely harder as your sound gets cleaner - but still possible. I recommend having lots of distortion for start - nevermind your hammer-ons not going off, it'll be so sensitive that you'll keep on hammering on wrong notes and making lots of background noises (so practice).
I guess you're not hitting the string with enough for or missing it in some part, so try with the distortions and slowly, as you practice, kill your distortion.
To give more weight to your pull-offs,it shouldn't be just loosing contact with the string but you need to hook that string like you're picking it with your finger doing the pull-off.
forget the *juicy tone. But think of.. very very very crunchy and 'wet'.. for a tone. And make sure you do it quick and *accurate enough. You have to really 'hammer' the string and the opposite for 'pull off.'
What effects pedals are being used here? I just started guitar today and my guitar sounds nothing like this. The sound doesn't continue to resonate when you hammer-on or pull-off, nor does it sound that sweet lol.
Generally, the more Distortion or Overdrive, and saturated (juicy tone) it is, easier to hammer-on and pull-off but you should eventually be able to do it on clean sounds as well. It's, really, got nothing to do with effects, but the effects may help. Some amps.. actually, most amps nowadays come with distortion effects.
Once you get good enough you will be able to do hammers and pulls with an acoustic. My uncle is this good and he blows me away every time i see him :)
hey! thanks for this, it was very helpful. a lot more structured with a lot more emphasis on technique than a lot of tutorials i've seen here. a couple of questiona though: how long do you suggest doing this every day? how did you do it when you were first learning this stuff?
Ello.. Ok. To clarify.. (I guess Marc Seal isn't as popular as I thought he was) I'm not Marc Seal, a.k.a. the guy in the video, this is his internet/TV? show he does. He's a musician and also a clinician/teacher. In every tutorial or lesson videos he has, in his 'riff of the show' he tries to integrate what he's taught in that video so you can practice, but it might be hard to follow because it's suppose to come with tabs I believe (not sure) but it's not free (I don't think).
Personally, as a somewhat experienced guitarist myself, I can say that when I started practicing.. techniques were just 'tools' that I needed to know to play certain songs or riffs.
So basically, I'd try to play variety and lots of songs/riffs and during the course, you'll eventually *have to get to know these stuff and will be practicing them.
I find it very hard to discipline myself, for example, to sit and turn on my metronome and practice hammer-ons and pull-offs with every finger in every combination possible for an hour.. heck even 5 minutes. So I think.. for me at least, it's when you try to play songs and riffs that you learn the techniques along and when you think it doesn't sound so good, just keep practicing that part until it sounds like rest of the song. Hope that helps man.
hey, yeah i'm the same way. it's really hard for me to learn this stuff in a really structured way. that sounds like good advice though...i guess the more songs and riffs i play, the easier it'll come, and the more ground i'll cover...thanks! :)
You arent hitting hard or fast enough.

Is it just much easier in eletric guitar
Or skill
Or Acoustic arent really good for these technique's
sukarestu 2 years ago
@sukarestu
Distortion, if you have it its easy to do these, if you don't have distortion its harder on an electric than on acoustic.
Really depends most on your amp settings.

does anyone know how to stop the string from just stopping when i put my finger down to do a hammer-on or take it off with a pull-off?
it might just be that i'm not doing it fast enough, but I often lose some or all of the volume on the 2nd note :(
Ioniza91 2 years ago
Man how do you do the hammer-ons and pull-offs too fast? I know the technique of both but I can do it to fast. please say me how do you do it!

I have no clue how to play that.. I (very much) doubt that even sounds right. Definitely unconventional way of playing.. Sorry, I have no clue.

I have only a single pick up on my guitar so it dies really quick is it my guitar or my amp?
StraightJacket65 3 years ago
It's probably the guitar. Single coils usually have lower output; generally, humbuckers are easier to work with for hammer-ons and pull-offs.
