I took my gf to her first RAngers hockey game a couple of weeks ago and we were riding the E train in the first car looking out the window and I was explaining all the signs, and I guess showin off...LoL...and this lady was tuning in and eventually said "Wow, that's pretty cool. I didn't know any of that" Those are some of the rare times when I think to myself Hey man, I got a pretty cool job.
Yes sir, I am a Conductor on the number 7 line...most packed and messed up-on-a-daily-basis line...I used to love the subway and look at it differently. Now it's just my job. Oh well, most people think it's a cool job.
The floor moving towards the train in your vid @ 14th St Union Square r called "Gap Fillers". They're used when a station is curved & leaves a gap betw the train and plat. Alot of concentration on the crew, (mainly the Motorman) is req'd for the gap fillers to extend during a normal station stop. Also the Conductor must not open the doors if they do not extend, as New Yorkers who r always in a rush, would not even notice and fall thru to the tracks. These things happen...
