Sometimes I think Stalin gets blamed for a lot of things that different people did. It is easier for the people to accept that it was one mad man than a conspiracy among the ruling party to maintain control with whatever tactics they deemed necessary. When the vilification of Stalin began many of his old colleagues and conspirators were still alive and wanted to assure that any blame for atrocities ended with Stalin. During the start of WW2, he put so much confidence in an non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany and was thus caught off-guard by an attack from them -- millions of Russians died as a result of this.

In many respects he was quite a bit worse than Hitler. Not only did he kill many, many, more jews than Hitler ever did, but there was also a lot more concentration camps than Nazi Germany. The only difference was that Stalin constrained the suffering in Russia.

Maybe what you say about the Germans is right about their arrogance but they are a highly productive efficient nation - what they produce is good quality. In the Fall of Communism documentary, put in an appication for a car it would break down after 100 miles. People under Stalin were forced under pain of death to meet quotas of tanks, so most tanks were put together quickly and half broke down.

Stalin actually succeeded in implementing his policies, with the results speaking for themselves: industrialising the Soviet Union, defeating Hitler, turning his country into a super-power are no feats of failure.

Stalin was a pretty scary guy. I disagree with people who say he was a great man (many Russians are duped into believing this). We was a tyrant. He killed millions of people, starved entire populations (Ukraine) and was an incompetent general.
During the start of WW2, he put so much confidence in an non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany and was thus caught off-guard by an attack from them -- millions of Russians died as a result of this.

In many respects he was quite a bit worse than Hitler. Not only did he kill many, many, more jews than Hitler ever did, but there was also a lot more concentration camps than Nazi Germany. The only difference was that Stalin constrained the suffering in Russia.

Also, 1937 purges unnecessarily devastated the Soviet high command, which greatly crippled the Red Army's performance, as evident in the Invasion of Finland in 1940, and during Barbarossa. Maybe what you say about the Germans is right about their arrogance but they are a highly productive efficient nation - what they produce is good quality. In the Fall of Communism documentary, put in an appication for a car it would break down after 100 miles. People under Stalin were forced under pain of death to meet quotas of tanks, so most tanks were put together quickly and half broke down.

In order to achieve this, he built up one oft he most brutally repressive police states the world has ever seen. Look up how many people died in the purges and famines he instigated. The human cost of Stalin's policies was horrific. It sounds like you're a Stalinist. Your argument makes sense until you're the one on the receiving end of Stalinist policies. I suggest reading Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler if you want to really want to see why Stalinism is repressive and evil.

@MrSoliPat You really should read Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler. Koestler was former communist who became disillusioned with Communism following a visit to the Soviet Union. He personally knew many of the defendants at Stalin's show trials in Moscow. It delves into the logic of Stalinism through the story of a former high ranking Party member who is arrested in Stalinist Russia during the purges.

@lysol5555 Really, any Soviet citizen? If you go around, you'd probably get a mixture of views, not some universal opinion that it was bad. But opinion isn't a measure of how something actually worked, it can be moulded in innumerable ways and it's always vacillating. Stalin actually succeeded in implementing his policies, with the results speaking for themselves: industrialising the Soviet Union, defeating Hitler, turning his country into a super-power are no feats of failure.

The issue here is that it's illogical to proclaim a whole construction a failure based on a few postulates. Every system has a chequered history, but you're too one-sided to consider history as a whole. There have been many books written in recent times about the Soviet economy, Stalin, etc. And they show a more balanced view than yours in light of new evidence.
