What gives the theory credence is that it is testable, meaning you can with your own equipment verify whether those objects exist and if so what they are. This is the reason why Newton's theory makes more sense than Aristotle and why Einstein's makes more sense that Newton's.

We must remember that, you can verify these recording for yourself, if indeed an astronaut on the Discovery Shuttle mission in 1989 said "we have the alien spacecraft under observance" you can actually go to NASA and request the audio of the mission.
