Truly one of the greatest battles in the Pacific. Both sides fought without quarter, with all their might, and only because of greater force of arms, greater supplies, were the Americans able to prevail.
And for what? Another chunk of dirt, sand, coral, and volcanic ash. For that we killed over 15,000 Japanese and lost over 5,000 of our own.
But sometimes necessary, unfortunately, as this one was.
