Thank you so much. The whole peri area must be washed with soap and water immediately before preparing for catheterization or Foley insertion. Wash hands after this. Set up sterile feild. Put on sterile gloves. Swab urethral area with betadine. Lubricate and insert Foley with bag & balloon syringe attached (don't inflate yet). When you get urine return, move Foley in a little further & inflate balloon. If you're not going to pre-wash peri area, there's no point in sending a lab specimen.
