I am intrigued by this game, my friends and I are starting to get into it. My question is this: ASIDE from the d20 (which is the go to dice for actions, spells, checks, etc...), what are the other dice used for??? This is confusing to me.
@nataliemoon1 The other dice is used for damage, mostly, but in DMing you can use the D10s/Dpercentile, to decide random loot, or encounters. I am certainly missing something but that is the most of it.
@nataliemoon1 The d20 is the go to dice, it does the checks, attack rolls, and anything else the dm comes up with. The other dice are for damage, and about all they're used for.
Iv always wondered how this kinda game worked and I iv never seen a game before, im very impressed, this looks actually looks like a lot of fun. like a living game in your imagination. completely different than rigidly structured video games and does not have that weird theme park feel to it like MMORPG. I actually want to seek out a group and day dream up different situations. surprised its not a more popular leisure activity or someone came up with it before 1974
@link2110 ouch. yeah, those books are not cheap. I am just recently getting into the game.
When i left my first reply, I only owned PHB1. Since then, thanks to some really nice deals I now own PHB 2, the DMG, MM1, the Ebberon Campaign setting, and have the Ebberon Player's guide coming in the mail. I also have the PDF's of the "purple books" [the power books] PHB 3 and the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide.
PHB3 looks dumb so I doubt I will buy that. I'm on the fence with the purple power books.
@moocher2121 It's probably either a warforged (from the Eberron Player's Guide) or a shardmind (from the Player's Handbook 3). If it's a magic-powered robot, then it's a warforged, may use the "Warforged Resolve" power, and doesn't need to sleep. If it's a crystalline golem-like creature, then it's a shardmind, may use the "Shard Swarm" power, and can communicate telepathically.
@DaUberFoxx No, in 4 E a natural 1 means you automatically fail your action, be it a check or an attack or whatever, however there are no other ill affects like potentially hitting an ally or dropping your weapon.
@DaUberFoxx rolling a 1 for an attack roll is a crit fail. Regardless of any bonuses, a 1 always results in a complete fail of whatever action you are trying to make. This includes skill checks. Just as a 20 always results in a critical hit. (just about ANY skill check is beyond complete with a 20 anyways)
@revolutionaryverse so im the troll but you arent the one who is blantantly attacking a game for no other reason than boredom. yeah your probably right you are definately not a troll
@TheInnerMadness yes you fucking are and the concencus with most of the people ive talked to about 4th ed is that is a BIG step in the wront direction compared to 3.5. and you deceide to make some smartass comment with no reason other to start a flame war. go fuck yourself
@revolutionaryverse Thin skin there mate? Anyways, 3rd ed, 4th ed, 1st ed, who cares? If you don't like the new version, don't play it. If you do like it, play it. If you enjoy 3.5 and want to stay with 3.5, no one will force you to change that. Imho one of the most important things with games is choice. They are giving you the option to play 4th should you so choose, they are not forcing you to. If so many people prefer 3.5 you should have no trouble finding people to play with. Cheers :)
This is looking like so much fun that even I'm now interested in playing tabletop D&D. And I've never had any interest in it before. I preferred playing the pc games like Baldurs Gate, Planscape Torment, Ice Wind Dale etc.
@Lostfaith1980 Funny, I used play those exact games, IWD2 and BG2 being my most favorite, but the an actual table top game looked tedious and lengthy. Though, of course, it sounds like edition they're playing here, is more of a simplified, quicker version, from this video?
I agree with other posters. I'd like to see an ongoing (save doesn't end) forum where people get together and play 4th edition. Rotate each season with a different DM, different setting and different player cast. Would be a great way to showcase everything 4e offers to new players and maybe help sell the product even more.
@Ogma01 That's actually an awesome idea! But so far the only celeb I know plays DnD is Vin Diesel; I don't know who else would play for the genuine social interaction and fun factor as opposed to a freaking paycheck.
@Ogma01 The big Bang Theory cast would be a trip. Them and eurika, and other nerdy shows. :P And just for shits and giggles, dispite how it w ould likely cause me to commit suicide after words.... Jorsey Shores... DnD. It would be like a train wreck!
@tomovon This is the worst you have seen? They are trying to show the players and succeeding. Trust me, there is worse out there. I have seen amateur ones with a static camera, only showing a couple players. Terrible.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There are some terrible videos on the net, I agree! Except that this is a promotional video and not fan made. I expect from them to hire someone who can position the cameras for a shoot. Actually to do a decent job you need 3 to 4 cameras, one for the close up of the DM and situational wide shots of the group, a couple cameras for shooting close ups and double shots and wide shots of the players and ideally a camera that covers the battle grid.
If i wass there when they were goign ot enter the room, i'd proclaim "I steal the drums" even if just to annoy the DM :)

depends on the power. I guess it was DM's discretion because there are a bunch of new players here.

The thing tht makes this game so good is that it is in no way linear. The possibilities and combinations literally endless.

Whats this "Living Statue" race? Did they let him invent it, or is that from one of the other editions?
moocher2121 1 year ago 2
@moocher2121 players manual 3 i think
its a legit race
link2110 1 year ago
@link2110 PHB 3 has: Githzerai, Minotaur, Shardmind, and Wilden. None of which resenble this "living Statue" race @moocher2121 was talking about.
Reading all three PHB's, I don't see anything that resembles this race.
Pgaither84 11 months ago
@Pgaither84 you're right, now that i check its not there. I know i saw it somewhere b/c the last campaign i played we had a guy with a warforged.
link2110 10 months ago
@link2110 It's called Warforged, and apparently it is in the Player's Guide to Eberron. it is a legit race, and it isn't easy to find.

@degen83 Rolling a 1 on a skill check is not an automatic failure in 4E. It is, however, an automatic failure on attack rolls, as you stated.
DoubleOnad 1 year ago 2
@DoubleOnad I did not know that, we play where a 1 on a die roll is an automatic failure and a natural 20 is an automatic success.
degen83 1 year ago 2
@degen83 Most DM's still apply the critical failure rule, just because.
tehredmage 1 year ago 3
@DaUberFoxx Not in the rules no. But, it is something that the DM could decide happens.
