Outing closeted gays and bisexuals (is there such thing as a closeted transvestite?) gave thousands of people something interesting to do for decades prior to 2008. Van Johnson died late that year. They could have offered proof of his sex life when he was alive. They figured an old man can fight back better than a dead man. He was taking care of himself at his Manhattan home on 09/11/2001. Little did he know the Internet is more harmful to certain people than a hijacked Boeing 767.
My late mother oince told me that she had the biggest crush on him when she was younger, and she (although not homophobic) was crushed, years later, when she found out he was bi.
Van Johnson was married to the same woman for 21 years. Recycling garbage from Wikipedia and a United Kingdom newspaper (the English gossip more about elderly and dead Americans than Americans do) insults the memory of these two people who were apolitical and harmless.

Whether he was or wasn't, in the end, was nobody's business but his and God's. What he definitely was, was a very talented, charming performer, of the sort you rarely see anymore.
I met him after a summer theatre show at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine, when I was a kid. He was a charming, nice guy and he was hilarious in the play. Very underrated actor.
He loved to paint and to cook in his tiny little kitchen in his apartment on East 54th Street. His agent and good friend was a man named Alan Foshco. He was terrified of having bad breathe and carried a small bottle of Listerine in his pocket wherever he went. One really funny thing I remember was that he wore White Shoulders perfume. He would laugh and just say he like the way it smelled on him. He had the most wry sense of humor..
I had the pleasure of knowing Van Johnson many years ago and becoming friendly with him. He was a very funny, extremely friendly and just a real down-to-earth sort of man. He never really enjoyed the Hollywood scene, but was a real New Yorker at heart. Just a very great man. He is missed. God bless him.
Would someone please make a tribute to Van.I can not find a single tribute to him and thats a shame because he was such a wonderful part of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
I just loved Van Johnson so much,he was so fun to watch on screen. And when you watch his films there is something about him that makes you fill safe, like you can completely trust him.Maybe that sounds silly but thats the way I fill when I watch him in his movies.

The first questioner could have saved time by just asking, "Do you have a complete and profound lack of acting talent?? He would have been forced to answer, "yes" and then everyone would have known it was Van Johnson
I guess he's good looking. Desi Arnaz was real handsome.

How the hell was Van Johnson supposed to be a star when he was talentless, fat, ugly and a homosexual?

I think Van Johnson is the most underrated actor of all time. His work in Battleground was outstanding.
I have enjoyed every movie I have seen him in and only wish we had an actor today a little like him.

Van Johnson just seemed like the every man. I can't think of a movie I've seen him in that I didn't enjoy his performance.

"Miracle in the Rain", if you can locate it, is a great movie, Van Johnson made with Jane Wyman, the first Mrs. Ronald Reagan. Bring the tissues!

I wouldn't call him an elite actor but certainly a competent one. No need for those nasty comments below. Seems like a nice guy too.

What a great guy. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Johnson in the early 1980's when he was doing dinner theater. A total gentleman.

He was such a pro in The Last Time I saw Paris and endearing in Good Old Summertime and every guy's best buddy in Brigadoon.
He held his own with Gene and Kelly was a task master in rehearsal. And how he took his guest shot on the Batman tv show so honestly.
