Thank you so much for this video. I need glittery pompoms. Does your technique works aswell with gliter paper? If not, is it possible you could advise me how to make them with this material. Thanks once again!
You can cut a small gap in the circle just wide enough to get the yarn through) so you can wrap it around instead of pulling all of that yarn through the middle
awesome tutorial. I knew this could be done using a cardboard circle, but never knew the exact way to do it. This really helped me alot. I bought a bowdabra a couple of years ago and it did not work out for me. It was to complicated. Waste of money and time. I gave it away, and that person could not get it either. This one is a little tedious, but with awesome results. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work and keep those tutorials coming.
Ah cool... This is the way I used to make it with my sisters as a kid... And we would make faces of them with those funny wiggly eyes... Sure gonna make that again... Thanks for this refreshinges (I know probably not a word lol) of my mind.
@Dougan317 Whatever size you want the disc should reflect. So for a diameter of 3cm it should be a disc with a thickness of 1.5cm I think from edge to hole
@MrLABulous I have always made pom poms the same way with the cardboard, but with one twist. I cut a small opening in the circle so that I may simply wind my yard around straight from the ball without having to cut off a length and pull it through each time. Also, I lay in a strand of yarn of a different colour before I begin so when I cut I am ready to tie. I finish the pom pom the same way that you do.
@jramsay100 when you say you cut a small opening do you mean if you look at the disc from above and imagine its a cheese it would be like cutting a slither out of the cheese? Also I dont undrstand your tip about "laying in a strand of yarn of different colour... could you expand please? Thanks!
great video! I've seen a couple of different techniques but i like that your video included the different outcomes when placing the yarn differently. Gonna go make some pom poms now! ;3
@jordomarks glad to be of help. My mother showed me how to do this when I was a lil kid and I thought I would put this up to help others after I had lots of my friends ask me how to make them
I would recommend making a center pull ball out of the yarn you want to use. You just pass the little ball through and the yarn gets pulled out from the middle. Makes this process go way fast. You make a center pull barn using a thing called a nostepinne. Look on youtube for how to make a center pull ball, there's a lot of vids on the process.
I cut a slit in my "donuts" so that I could wrap an entire ball of yarn around without having to pull all that extra yarn through. When winding, I just avoided winding the yarn directly over the slit, then when I was done winding, I just taped up the slit and kind of mushed & move dthe yarn around until it was even.
Thanks for this brilliant video. The instructions are much better than the ones I took from the book "Complete Guide to Knitting and Crotchet" It didn't tell me to do quite a small circle in the middle and my ball ended up falling apart after an hours work! So upsetting. One wonders how a person writing a whole book cant be bothered to write down proper instructions. Right, going back to my second attempt now...
@zheleo- oh! make sure you use both strings from the pom pom even if you have to get a big eye yarn needle or have to thread the needle twice and sew one string to the hat and then the other. this will give you a very secure connection that will not come out. take care!
@2MrLABulous- look at how this crafter does her cardboard. it makes wrapping quick and easy...@zheleo- yes. use the wool you tied the pompom with. that way the pom pom is directly secured to the hat and will stay in place better than if you tie off the pom pom and attempt to attach it with another piece of wool. i sew...so i know!

Great tutorial! I've got a question, how do you attach a pom pom onto a hat? do you sew it on using the wool you tied it with or do you do something else like crochet...?
@zheleo I would just sew it on making sure you get the thread through the knot you make to tie the pom pom. But I guess you could attach it in other ways. My sewing isn't that hot :)
wow, u really solved my problems,i didn't tighten them enough! thank you very much!

This is pure torture watching this lol, mother taught me a half disk works just as great.
with a center strand before or after the yarn is loaded to tie off before cutting.
Nice try though, you could have made it simpler too by cutting a slit for easy loading too.
Just couldn't finish watching. lol

instead of pulling all the wool through (which takes forever) you can also make a small ball with the wool and just poke that through

@amycat101 No you can just start winding the new wool around. No knots needed :)
