I don't get how people can hate this version of the song so much yet love the original. This is a great cover, and is you listen to all the vastly different genres of music out there and then this to this cover compared to the original, I can't see how they're different enough to deserve such different opinions about. Maybe it's just because James Blunt has a bit of a reputation of being unpopular so people already decided to hate his stuff before they even listen to it.

Compared to this decent version, the Crowded House original has a fuller, lusher arrangement, PLUS beautiful vocal harmonies. So, I think one's preference depends on how 'produced' one likes one's music. Both versions are good. Blunt's sounds more vulnerable and maybe more honest. CH's version is a straight-ahead pop treatment, which happens to be my preference. But hey, there's room in the world for BOTH versions of this excellent song, as well as many more versions.!

This cover has much more emotionality to it than the original to me in both the vocals and guitar. I think that cover songs can be better than the original (ex., Gary Jules' Mad World) though of course the songwriter deserves credit for creating the song in the first place.
