@CurbsideColumn I think a lot of times, commercial mimic things of the popular or cool things of the day. I know that in the movie about the same time, "The Thomas Crown Affair" there's a scene with Steve McQueen flying a glider. It's a pretty neat scene and can be found on youtube. I'm thinking this might be why you see it in the Chrysler ad about the same time.
man, there is a gorgeousn black 68 300 440 with a black vinyl top for sale in the US for only 11,500. To me, I'm only 24, and I'd rather have one of these then a 70 Challenger. I just love the look, the feel of these cars. And Idk where they get their numbers from. I swear a 440 300 does a quarter in like 14.
I owned one about 20 years back. My first "second car"..I was 29 and thought I could afford another car. I always wanted a 300. Brakes were crap and it hated to start. I sold it for much less than I paid. It was a hoot to drive, however...even w/bad brakes.
Reminds me of the early 90's Infiniti commercials. The move up refers to the hierarchy the Chrysler Corp had, like GM, You'd start with a Plymouth, move to a Dodge, then to a Chrysler, which was more a premium brand in those days (and perhaps in the future if Fiat's plan for the division hold up).
I bought one in `86 for $100 for a one season winter beater just for the engine and transmission.. what's not to love about a 440 Golden Commando and a torqueflite 727 ?? Funny thing is, this car was actually fast ! friends of mine had a `68 Camaro 327 and a `67 Firebird 326 respectively and this barge could walk them both !! no replacement for displacement !!
i have a 71 it had one of the first cassette players with a microphone for recording while you drive lol. it also has a completely gratuitous headlight washer and wiper system. they did crazy stuff back then
Indeed! The zooming into the text at the end is very modern to me and I really like how the setting they used for the commercial, the plane's shadow over the car is a nice effect as well! The music is very commanding and driving I think :].
Indeed! I really like the zooming into the text at the end, I didn't expect that from a '60's commercial! Also I like the plane's shadow directly over the car, it really puts it into proportion size-wise! The music is also very driving, this is a classic commercial and car for sure :]!
So funny you said what you said, those are all the reasons why I like this ad so much. The text, the zooming, the glider shadow and the music. Very modern for it's time, Just look at the 67 or commercials for Chrysler and you can see a difference, they seem extremely old.
I grew up with one of these, which my parents bought new when I was 9 years old. Legend has it that my Dad drove it across Ohio in 2 1/2 hours when it was new. I never went over 100 in it, but my brother claims to have "buried the needle" once. We affectionately called it "The Tank", it was big, green, and emerged unscathed from several minor accidents. Sadly, rising gas prices and lack of really good High Test forced us to sell it for $300 in '79. The new owner wrecked it 3 weeks later :-(
I own one of these as well. It's the same color scheme as the one in the commercial. All of these cars came with 440/727 drivetrains. Its an absolute dream to drive. It has been my daily driver for the last 2 months.
I own one of these. 2 door, hardtop, 440 big block, dual exhaust. Triple black. The devil cries tears of blood when I drop the hammer on a moonlit night.
As a youngster I had an 11-year old Chrysler 300 and it was GREAT! I paid $400 for it and assumed it had a 383 in it, but the German foreign exchange motorhead in my auto shop class clued me in to the fact that it actually a 440. With a new Holly 4 barrel and some spark plug wires, it was ready for action. It had electric windows, full AM stereo, and it could get up to 123 MPH. Oh to be young a foolish again...
Love the interplay with the glider - very cool.

Underappreciated and undervalued. These were beautifully-styled Chryslers with the same power as the Chargers, et al. Find a convertible!

In a contest pitting Chuck Norris against William Conrad's voice in a battle to the death, my money would be on Conrad.

It really doesn't seem so long ago and the commercial itself seems very modern for the time. :O)
