I am amazed there are only 2 comments on such an important song. I remember the first time I heard this song. We were all seated around our busy dining table having dinner. THe moment Bobby Gentry started to sing, we stopped and listened. QUite a feat in my family. We had never heard a woman sing like that or music like that. It was and remains hauntingly beatiful. It is one of the sixties most important songs. I've loved it my whole life.
Somewhere else inhere read that this deep to the roots ballad is multilayered, what do you think? I don't know the cultural references from which it derives yet it is indeed as deep as a good novel or a great film!!!

I think it was a baby and then billy joe jumped off the bridge in guilt beacuse he threw his son off a bridge.
