Oh yeah, I have a copy of "What If?" the opening track "Take it off theTop" is a powerhouse Tour de Force. Steve is my favorite OVERALL guitarist, because he can Rock, Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, Metal and Shred. Most guys can shred (Yngwie, Gambale) some can rock (Blackmore, Trower) some can Rock and Blues (Moore, Vaughn) but Morse can do all of the above and then some. He's got to be the most underrated guitarist.Currently he is with Purple, but In my humble opinion, his early stuff is the best
i said on another video... this was way back when he was "crappy" then. how is it humanly possible to get better than this? if i played like this almost twenty years ago, i'd have been set for life and quite happy. not to forget larue.
I went to see Stanley Clarke at The Laurie Auditorium in San Antonio and there was this completely unknown band opening for him called the Dixie Dregs. I couldn't wait to see some bunch of bozos called Dixie Dregs who must have some gall to think they were good enough to be on stage with a jazz/fusion great. WOW! Was I ever blown away!
@cjk9013 - What year? HA HA! No idea, man; sometime in the eighties, maybe? All I remember is how great they were, and how unusual to have a jazz, and obviously classical violinist in the band!
I was in a progressive jazz band that opened the show for the Dregs in the 1970s. No artist enjoys being blown off the stage by another band, but I am grateful for the opportunity to rub elbows with such extraordinary talent.
Steve manages to combine technique, feel, balls and off the cuff improvisation with a mastery of a mix of musical genres and styles. On top of all that, he doesn't seem to care a jot about any kind of fashion. In other words, a TRUE musician.
I would have to say that, hands down, Morse is the most versatile guitarist out there. I am not taking anything away from others. Shawn Lane was (and still is) brilliant. Johnson is a legend. But there is nothing that Morse cannot play - metal, blues, classical, bluegrass, you name it. He is a master of all those styles. Check out his album "Stand Up." There are appearances by Holdsworth, Albert Lee, and Eric Johnson. It's a classic.
Danny Gatton is the only other guitarist that can match Steve's versatility...but he's not with us anymore. Steve's my favorite, but Danny was a very close second....very close.
This one is supercool! ( Although no offcence to Paisly, Steve would own him... no doubt. He's one of the most diverse and talented guitarplayers I've ever seen)
Brad Paisley mentioned in the same sentence as Morse? I almost pooped my pants laughing when I saw that. I'm not sure anyone can match the versatility and talent of Steve unless it's Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap....but only because he can turn it up to 11! haha Peace Morse fans
Eric would come closer than john or Shawn...Shawn had amazing speed and talent, but he never showed that country spank and John definitely can't groove on country...forget it! Morse is absolutely the best FUSIONARY guitarist in the sense of max styles fused in one genetic moment
Chromatype, listen to McLaughlin play Indian-jazz fusion on Shakti's Handful Of Beauty CD, with a guitar desinged to enable him to imitate the microtones used in Indian classical music. The improvs that defy belief. He's never recorded country music but there are styles Morse hasn't tried either. Doesn't make either better than the other. I think McLaughlin more creatvie when it comes to improvising, though.
brad paisley? yeah, he's good. there is no doubt about it. steve morse is on a whole other level from anyone else. he is blistering fast, when you can even realize that he has thrown a fill into a song. his best speed runs are undetectable. he can play anything, and there is no cleaner, more precise guitar player that i have ever seen. keep your paisley and be happy. it is nice to see someone of his caliber come into the bunch of average country music, these days. he better practice to take sm.
I got to concur with you, I've seen both in person and although from different genre's, Morse can flat out play everything put before him. I bought the SM-Y2D Purple Burst Signature. and only wish it could make my fingers do what his does. :)
you people cannot be serious...morse would bury paisley on every front...plus he owns on nylon and can play jazz and metal with the best. paisley can play fast country licks and nothing else.
You might want to pull your head out of your ass. Steve would tear pretty boy Paisley apart without even trying... and Paisley's actually pretty good.
I'm happy with my own brains and hands, I just let them play guitar every day and I get inspired by great guitarists like Steve Morse. Maybe if I practice very hard I become as good es he, ever... in my own way of course. :P Well, it are dreams, but I belief in dreams. :)
hey dude..do u have d song called "ice cakes" in this video that was d first song..and the title of this vid is complete style..thnx for uploading it..
Listen to The Dregs play "The Bash" live and I can guarantee you will be up on your feet dancing away. By the way, I HATE country music also!!! This is closer to bluegrass. Steve and the boys smoke no matter what type of music they play
fucking absolutley impecable...morse even does all the keyboard solos and violin solos from the original note for note...The Dixie Dregs are by far the Best live band i have ever seen...my jaw was on the floor the whole night
this is amazing.. I was speechless after seeing this the first time. The vibe is sooo cool, and they play it so well. Best country/bluegrass inspired tune ever played by a rockband. period!
What stands out about Morse is his ability to compose, dating back to mid-70s Dixie Dregs stuff...some of their better known tunes he wrote before he was 20.
Steve Morse, wow. A southern fried guitar slinger with soul. Tasty little country licks, banjo type rolls, and some fantastic alternate picking. Dave LaRue, the best bassist ever. And Van Romaine's awesome.
RITCHIE Blackmore, doesn;t match up To Morse,Does He.
