Here in Austin, Texas we live in the city. Although we don't have too many neighbors near by, we have a small wooded area across a major street. My sister has always loved seeing and listening to the cardinals and so I went and bought a bird feeder, and sure enough they started coming to the feeder, and so did the females. How do I keep other birds from eating all of the seeds. I really don't care if the doves, and sparrows eat, but the crows and grackles are a pain?
Once I was walking down the street while a cardinal was singing in a nearby treetop. I imitated his whistle. He followed me to the next treetop and sang again. I imitated him again, and he followed me to the next tree and sang again. We went a whole block, whistling at each other.
We don't have Cardinals in Colorado. After growing up in Indiana and seeing them all time it is nice to have these pictures and hear the birds song again.
@GospelTruth37059 Baby cardinals are a drab reddish-brown all over. They're not very cute. They don't start getting red feathers until they're a few weeks old.
I have an entire flock of cardinals who frequent my bird feeder, at least 4 males and 4 females with a few younger birds. Throughout the day, they come a few at a time; but between 5:00 to around 6:00 they seem to meet up for an evening meal all at together. Beautiful birds. I've often thought that the one call sounds like they are saying, "birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie," lol.
The female cardinal is the first bird I ever took a picture of, and the male was the first bird I identified after the blackbird. I love to take pics of birds. We've watched one pair of cardinals at our feeder grow into 10 pairs after feeding them for the past 6 years. I have been fortunate to watch a male feed the female once at the feeder 2 years ago. They're such gorgeous and melodic birds.
Very nice :-). We've had, for several years, a couple of very mysterious calls that we'd not been able to identify. At the same time we're pretty much covered up in Cardinals to the point that we usually have more than one nesting pair about. I believe we may have finally identified the "pretty bird" and "pi-choo!" calls as coming from our scarlet friends.
I love hearing and seeing Cardinals in late winter, early spring in Wisconsin! Especially when I'm walking to class! :D I'd love to get a picture of one someday, they are my favorite birds. Red is my favorite color after all. :D
@WriterAtHeart21 yeah, i live in louisiana and there is one male cardinal, and like seven females. the females just fly here and there most of the time, but the male is always in his one favorite little tree. i was wondering if that was normal?

Living in Olympia WA we don't have the privilege of learning the Cardinal's song, but we were just on Maui and it only took a day or two for me to get familiar with the Cardinal's call and look for the red in the trees. We also enjoyed the Red-crested Cardinal with the same pretty call. I got a great video of a Red-crested Cardinal trying to figure out why the bird in the car rear veiw mirror did not move.
Thanks. Interesting. One of my favorite year round birds here in Central VA. Both male and female lovely coloring. Please do an analysis of the wonderful Veery who seems to be singing a duet with itself.
Thank you, Mr. Budney, for this very interesting expert analysis of what makes the voice of these exquisitely beautiful birds so sweet and irresistible. However they do it, there is no doubt in my mind that the cardinal is the Caruso of the bird world. Then again, I don't think even Caruso himself could sing anything nearly as enchanting as "Wheet! Wheet! Chir-chir-chir-chir-chir-chir-chir!"
On behalf of cardinal lovers everywhere, let me express my utmost gratitude for all the work you do!
@megabobolink we have them in Minnesota, in fact, I have 5 different bird feeders, and all different types of birds.........although I get plenty of mice since they like to eat the dropings of seed on my lawn......
The colour of the bird is awesome,it make the bird more visible..from..Malta thanks.

They're cute when they're young, brown fluffballs, no mask or goatee. Especially cute when they're babies with no crests, no tails.
