  • what was the total resolution of the complete image

  • This is not Invader ZIM!

  • 0:06.

  • I love huge wood.

  • I missed the show, will it air again? I'd really like to see it.

  • fucck nature

  • pretty tall.

  • To one Top Comment, good catch on the "falling figure". Likely a climber rigging for the camera dolly system on the adjacent tree.

  • Just like ma dick.

  • this tree is more than 1500 years old, so how many peoples lived in that period ? this is an example how we must save our nature

  • The biggest report for Redwood I have come across, was 424 ft.

But I wouldn't be surprised if some graced the 450 ft threshold.

  • @rephaim23 There was a tree in Australia bigger than that back in the 1800's

  • @abbeykroeter

William Ferguson, Inspector of State Forests. Melbourne Botanic Garden, 21 February, 1872.

TO CLEMENT HODGKINSON, ESQ., ASSISTANT-C0MMISSI0NER OF LANDS AND SURVEY.

..."Many of the trees that have fallen through decay and by bush fires measure 350 ft. in length, and with girth in proportion. In one instance I measured with the tape line one huge specimen that lay prostrate across a tributary of the Watts, and found it to be 435 ft. from its roots to the top of the trunk."

  • @abbeykroeter

Ferguson continues, "...At 5 ft. from tho ground it measures 18 ft. in diameter, and at the extreme end where it has broken in its fall, it is 3 ft. in diameter. This tree has been much burnt by fire, and I fully believe that before it fell it must have been more than 500 ft. high. As it now lies it forms a complete bridge acioss a deep ravine."

  • As with the reports of giant Douglas fir, and Redwoods exceeding 400 feet in height, we must decide whether the trained foresters and lumbermen where incompetent at math, or we have to consider the real possibility such giant trees existed.

Measurements made by certified surveyors and foresters should not be laughed at and relegated to myth, especially when they are FIRST HAND accounts.

And besides, measuring a fallen tree is far more accurate than trying to measure a standing tree.

  • No one really knows the exact percentage of how much old growth Douglas fir, Redwood, and Euclayptus has been burnt and logged in the past 150 years. Estimates range from 70 to as much as 99% depending on the region and species.

With those kinds of numbers, this makes old reports even more valuable than ever before. And any first hand measurements are extremely important for big tree researchers.

  • A Douglas-fir tree felled in 1897 in near Maple Falls, Washington was 465 feet tall.

About 165 feet tall than the tree in this photo. I have recently obtained confirmation of this tree in several news sources, and photographs.

99% of the biggest and tallest mid valley Douglas fir has been logged. From Vancouver to Portland, a vast stand of immensely tall trees once grew, some of them 100 feet higher than any tree today.

  • I know where im climbing 21st December 2012!

  • Fake. Its photo-shopped.

  • I do recommend to watch and to listen to the channel of Dorwenda.

  • i was really stressed but this just saved me

  • National Geographic is outstanding. Without such organizations, we would eventually be reduced to news-bots, unaware of our planets natural beauty and history.

  • If you keep on clicking 0:07 it spunds like he is saying a glitch.

  • I NEED THAT MAGAZINE!!!!

  • its has around 1000 tones of weight

  • ok... i know i will get crap for this, but.......THERE ARE 'THINGS' THAT LIVE IN THESE FORESTS..... VERY OLD 'THINGS'..... my people have names for them, i saw one once, they are the protectors of the trees, these places should be left alone... they are lost in time, where they belong....

  • @12skmf

They appear to be doing a pretty mediocre job of protecting these forests.

  • I wonder how it weights

  • @fcbmartinso i know, if only someone would invent a search engine whereby the answers to such trivia could be ascertained in a speedy and efficient manner - but I guess we'll just have to wonder for now....

  • @fcbmartinso The weight? This redwood has over 35,000 cubic feet of wood. but lets round it to that 35K. Wet redwood is about 50 lbs. / cubic foot. So 35,000 x 50 = 1,750,000 pounds.

That is more or less the trunk and major limbs. The entire redwood with branches and foliage and other stuff on it, should be close to 2,000,000 (2 million) pounds. You might find the pages online about REDWOOD DIMENSIONS to be worth Googling and of interest.

  • @RedwoodExplorer

aprox 907 of tones of live wood lol!

  • Haha Born In Raised

  • My backyard :D

  • Humboldt....Born-N-Raized

  • "In Skagit County is a forest of Douglas pine and white cedar in which there are many trees reaching 325 feet high, and some of them are fully 350 feet high." -- 1922

  • @RedwoodExplorer thanks

  • they are about 112 meters long!!! great beauty of nature!

  • If you enjoyed this, find the 44 minute version Nat Geo put on Youtube May 2010. This segment is included. And a lot more excellent photography. Search here for Climbing the Redwood Giants.

  • God Is Great. nice video.. i will go there sometime soon.

  • You know what they should do: make a life-size poster of this tree and post it on a NY skyscraper

  • Did anyone else spot that scout trooper on his speeder bike... no? Awesome trees!! Too bad man is too stupid and a lot were cut down (sometimes with explosives).

  • @windatekili I would like to see a match shoved up your ass and watch you burn from the inside out you lifeless piece of shit. Burn in hell.

  • The trees... I love them... If these old trees could talk, or rather: if humans would listen to the trees, they probbably got many stories and lots of original wisdoms to tell. So let's listen and really listen!

  • exacly pansworldnews..

  • coooooooooooooooooooool dude and wtf

  • wow

  • I ddon't think their are any redwoods in Canada, only California

  • How utterly beautiful !

  • its amazing how california is the only place in the world where tyou can see trees like this!

  • @khrixtian18 no there isnt, you obviously dont know anything about red woods

  • great pic.... but to much money on it....

  • Nat geo rlz!!!!!!

  • wow!

  • Nat Geo is the best!

  • I usually don't respond to stupid and ill informed comments, however I'd like to set you straight. I've seen these trees in person, and know the gigantic size they are. Take into account the simple rules of perspective and you then realize how complex of a task this was. Now as for the importance of it; to call this ancient tree stupid is just plain ignorant. The fact that it did survive man's ignorance in the past is amazing in itself.

    Great job NatGeo!!

  • i see...

    3 1ds mk iii - 6.5K each

    3 35mm f1.4 - 1.3K each

    6 pw - 180 each...

that's nearly 25K of Gear! WOW!

  • Man he had about $20,000 of cameras on that dolly.

  • awesome

  • Great picture and I'm sure you guys paid an arm for it. Make a poster to make some of it back, haha. :)

  • Buy the October issue, its only 6$ and worth it

  • When i visited California last year, i saw them. PIctures hardly do them justice! They are so massive and beautiful. Almost unreal! They make you feel like your in some fantasy story.

    :D

  • Wow ! So majestic ! I've never seen this tree before, its like a leftover from the Giants from biblical stories. So beautiful ! We need to preserve them carefully.

  • I'd love a poster of this picture. Seriously, NatGeo, make this a poster and I'll buy it.

  • poster is included with the issue

  • Sheme. Even National Geographic doesn't know that Nikon is the best camera. They used Canons, so therefore their images must have sucked.

    Canon blows. Always will.

  • plant more trees save the world....and yes i own a baby redwood tree takes pride of place in my garden.

  • Very cool.

...I didn't know Forrest Gump was a photographer.

  • Clever and committed hard work resulted in a stunning photograph. It's great when the effort pays off!

  • Thats so cool, the treeas are big! Like i want to be a tree lololololololololololololol

  • hey nick you pictures are great I heard you were on a bill board in cville

  • Thats wonderful...Its great to see still that much gigantic tree existing now.During the time of Dinosaurs,Some trees would be more taller than this...

  • Thats just amazing!

  • ich war im Redwood Nationalpark einfach grandios diese großen Bäume

  • nacht der untoten

  • Amazing project, just trying to photograph one. Trees like this are NOT replaceable. They're historical treasures!

  • think about it.. all the tresss now are going to be siiiiiiick in another 1500 years.. even that little weed you picked out of your garden last weeeek.... fuckk!

  • Exactly why I posted online, a forest management note page mentioning that forests are not renewable resources. They are replaceable at best, but barely in the case of giant redwoods like these. I refer to the north coast redwoods as a living museum.

    Cheers - M. D. Vaden of Oregon

  • Is it possible the Sequoias were genetically engineered by the ancients?

The trees don't have to be cut down.

No educated person would do such a thing.

I suppose if 10 000 escaped convicts suddenly escaped and climbed the trees there would be a problem?

    Just being silly.

  • fantastic trees.its a pity we have to cut them down

  • Why?

  • Wow, that tree is gigantic. o.o

  • That is a grand looking tree. I've been to that same redwood, but only glanced from ground level.

The photo they put together is really practical and enjoyable for many folks, because it's the only way to see the entire canopy without climbing. Even someone climbing in that tree would not see this same view.

    M. D. Vaden of Oregon

  • I want to make a play house in that.Just think of the endless posssiblities with a tree that big.You could have a mansion in the tree

  • My Aunt and Uncle drove thru there and loved the trees. I would live in one if I could. These trees are 1,500 years old. These trees were here before Jesus Christ was born. I love climbing trees. Im a kid at heart...LMAO

  • And me, and me. :)

  • If the tree is 1500 yrs old and Jesus was born 2009 yrs ago .. .. ..

  • i want 1 of those to grow in my backyard

  • Incredible. Makes me sad that any have been cut down. I realize we need wood, but to cut down something so incredible that has been around over a thousand years seems like a sin.

  • what do we need to wood for pray tell?

  • we dont need wood we just want it almost everything u can make with wood can be copied with different things

  • i agree with ya

  • i have that issue! =]

  • Awesome

  • Badass!

  • this is awsome

  • I have that issue already! got it in the mail yesterday :D

  • Would designating the locations of these old growth trees as "National Preserves" prevent anyone from cutting them down?

  • Most of the largest like the one in this photo are in protected areas. Even climbing is pretty much restricted to science research or special photography like this. Save the Redwoods League continually works to acquire more redwood forest for preservation.

  • Excellent. At least, there are protections in place.

  • Nice :) I really wanted to climb one of these but only if i dont damage it. I really hope too some1 is going to stop the idiots who is destroying the jungles

  • A true marvel of nature and this vid really amazes.

    I will surely pick-up September's edition

  • Damn, that first pic is amazing!

  • awesome :D redwood trees are amazing
