@vk45de the three outer stations of the wing are for A/A weapons(aim-7/9/120's) and the 2 inner are for A/G weapons.. the reason that Aim-120(AMRAAM) is loaded on the wingtip is the way it flys to the target.. it climbs upwards because it's motor runs for a limited time.. it has a better "kill probability"..

@23580578 sidwinder is shot within visual range.. that is why it is successfull shorter distance.. more chances to hit the target.. ;)

By the way, why would they put the heavier AMRAAM on the wingtips of the F-16, and not closer to the fuselage instead? Wouldn't the physics of it (fulcrum and leverage) mean that there would be greater wing stress involved?

@RedFoxAce it may seem weird but that makes the jet handle better when the 120s are on the wing tips. just about every load out you see will have the AIM-120 on the wing tips and the 9 on stations 2 or 8..

@RedFoxAce An AMRAAM is still in the light missile class. Still the main reason is that only the wingtip station is wired to carry the AMRAAM.

@RedFoxAce Actually stover is wrong. The F16 can carry 6 AMRAAMs. The reason it doesn't carry the sidewinder on the wingtip is b/c the wingtip points down slightly compared to the more inner side. This would be a disadvantage if you wanted to shoot it at a plane that's above you in a dogfight. The AMRAAM is a longer range missile so it would matter less.
