Women...?
Gay never "only" meant happy. It had a connotation of loose morals and wild abandon. Showgirls and prostitutes for example were also euphemistically called "gay" during that time.

when i saw this movie for the first time i couldn't believe that was her. She had on no make-up...she looked so FRUMPY i almost didn't recognize her.
