Lots of bad things can happen if you offend people. They might shun you and/or boycott your product. They might sabotage your life in legal or illegal ways. They might become sad, and you might be the kind of person who don't want to make people sad.
And if you're the person being offended, you'll either feel bad or learn to not feel at all. As someone who chose to build thick walls, I wouldn't recommend it. It's probably better to feel bad. As long as you can take it.

@ignoranttwat Racism, homophobia, misogyny, and other such bigoted views are not merely about being offended. As MM pointed out, it's about prejudice, discrimination based on prejudice, making people feel inferior because of what they are, and so on. Being racist/homophobic/misogynistic shouldn't be illegal per se, but any actions that go beyond offending people into oppressing them, causing them severe mental distress, or directly negatively affect them in other ways are not acceptable.

@clarissa35f Look, you can take any argument to nonsensical and idiotic extremes. For example, you seem to be arguing that subjective feelings don't matter since they're subjective, and nobody ever has the right to be offended. So teachers should be allowed to verbally abuse their students (let's assume they're in college) by calling them racial/sexual/ethnic epithets and whatnot as long as they don't discriminate against them? Of course not. You have to use common sense in this.

@PBDPBD I already spoke on this. Harrassment is when it is imposed on you from outside, and you cannot avoid it. The peofessor may be harassingt you, by forcingt you to listen to his opinions. And they may indicate that he might not be fair in testing etc. But someone says something you don't like? " get over yourself." your bloody feelings are not what rules... free speech is More Important than your feelings.

@PBDPBD here is the thing, this whole thread is a response about offensive SPEECH. Talking about actions... and How wrong they are, either is off topic. or.. is a way of conflating offensive speech, with improper action, so that arguing for speech, is incorrectly seen as defending improper action. Not saying that is your goal, after all, only you know what you mean when you say what you say. But limiting discussion to speech, may be less confusing, than bringing in actions as well.
