Interesting movement - seems to borrow ideas from the finale of the Hammerklavier and also the F# Major Beethoven sonatas. Brahms did that sort of thing in the first one too; compare the rhythm at the beginning of the first sonata with the beginning of the Hammerklavier!
This is a beautiful rendition of Brahm Piano Sonata #2. I have always thought of the 2nd as the less of the three piano sonatas. Mr. Katchen's interpretation has changed my opinion about this work.
To me no-one could equal Julius Katchen playing Brahms piano music Well worth listening to Katchen playing Op 118 no 2 unequaled I believe

version éminemment romantique, mais Brahms me semble mériter un traitement plus... pré expressionniste. Magnifique, malgré tout.

Great to see Katchen play his favourite works.
He loved Brahms all his life. This live recording , although not perfect , shows him well inspired.!!!
I thank you by posting this Brahms piece -sound only-with Katchen of course!!!Enjoy'''''

Je connais Julius Katchen depuis 45 ans et ses interprétations n'ont pas pris une ride.
Admirable il était, admirable il est resté.

Katchen's good at Brahms, but I must say that I prefer Richter...

Both versions are technically good I think although Katchen's is a bit faster.Richter's version is surely more polished but yet!!!!

If you can listen Katchen in the 2e piano concerto of Rachmaninoff, with Solti and the LSO... terrific....!
