ok...lets set the record straight. the kid is holding a curve soprano sax. Its in the key of Bb, one octave above the tenor. There is a curve and straight version of the horn. There is also a sopranino sax in Eb, one octave above alto. Selmer and Yanagisawa make pro models in a staight format, and Romeo Orsi of Italy makes a curve model. There is also a soprillo sax, one octave soprano, produced by a company out of Holland I believe.

I think what you are referring to is a Bass, Contra-Bass, or Sub-Contra Bass Sax (each one larger than the last respectively).

Pitched Bb, Eb, and BBb.

It was contra-bass. My director told me about the sub-contra bass. He said he had seen one once, and nobody beleives him because they're so rare.

Eppilsheim makes the Tubax (Bb Bass sax w/a unique design), and the BBb subcontra-bass sax, as well as the Bb Soprillo Sax (one octave above the Bb Soprano sax).

Orsi makes a Bb Bass (traditional design), and Eb Contra-Bass saxes.

The subs and contras are so rare cause they cost so much to produce. Not a whole lot of call for them (though I would love an Eb contra bass sax for concert band!). But at over $40,000 a piece, it aint happening!
