There's a reason why they don't react to range attacks: back in 1.8 or something they did, and when you shot an arrow right up, it fell down and hit you, and the wolfs thought: "our master is shooting that guy, go get him!" Fun fact...

I think wolves now only spawn in Taiga biomes, and they're like livestock in that they have a finite spawn number.

@RocMerc They did have a much lower spawn rate in other biomes before the mechanics change. Either you got lucky or the wolf wandered into that chunk after spawning.
