@redmask1231 78 actually, which requires quite a bit more cyclists to even power those showers! go jump in a lake with some shampoo, or in the rain. problems solved?!
@maurotamm well bikes gennies and humans are also rather inefficient too :-) (at least at this kind of activity) - I can tell you this if I ever manage to get some solar panels and a grid tie in installed I WILL make an exercise bike connected to it. it just makes sense if your going to pedal might as well get some power out of it.
@junglebooksteve I suspect that, like most people, they would have been having a shower that day anyway. This means that it wasn't necessarily a waste of electricity and also saved a small amount of coal, oil, gas or nuclear generated electricity.
ok 70 people pedaling to generate enough power for a shower....after all that cycling they are each going to need a shower, meaning its 70 times less efficent than if it was connected to the grid!

Seeing as humans are only about 20% efficient at turning food to electricity this way (only to turn it back into heat again) you might as well preheat the water by running it through suits installed on the cyclists' sweaty bodies!
My gym has the bikes from the indoor cycling class hooked up to a special generator and any power created from the class goes back in to powering the building. :)
The wind up torch and radio are great products for the millions that live off the grid...the bike could do the same. A family doing some peddling every night could provide lights and a small tv.
If there was a range of exercise bikes in a sports shops and one bike also generated power which one would you choose?
if you think this is a good idea and want to help make one let me know!
I'm not very good at electricity/dynamos/power storage etc.
The speedometer is modified to show how much power is being generated but it's not in volts and watts but in a language we understand.....1 hour of nintendo ds, or one hour of a 30inch lcd tv.
the bike wont change the world as the program shows that to power our average home takes a huge amount of peddle power. but it's all about little bits adding up to a lot.
The bike can also be used in less industrialised places where there is no electricity.
I want to make an exercise bike that you have at home and that has a battery that can store power generated by the peddling. the idea is that you tackle two of the biggest issues out there right now....the need for people to exercise more and also the need to cut our electricity consumption/carbon footprint.
If your kid wants to play nintendo ds then he/she must earn the power to play...great way for parents to get their kids moving and feeling like they are taking part.
Cities should implement this. They could make a deal with the local gyms to hook up their exercise bikes (and perhaps other machines) to the power grid, and feed any power generated into the local grid.
@cinemartian I fully agree. Why waste human exertion. People could be paid to come and generate power, but they wouldn't be called gyms they would be called power stations.
so what he um....started....you know....

Probably not the first to make this remark but these cyclists are going to need a good long shower after this.
More factual : they should have included an electric accumulator somewhere, because now most of their effort went to waste.

@yalphax it saved nothing, do you know how much energy does it take to produce food...?
nehorlavazapalka 1 year ago
@nehorlavazapalka The food energy would have gone into working out to begin with, so why not redirect it into electrical energy?

5 of us from the Bedfordshire Road Cycling Club took part in this programme.
We really did pedal for the entire day - worst items were the oven and the power shower - all 70 of us were required to keep the latter item running.
Really opened our eyes to how much power is required in a house in just one day.

Where can I get this generator-bike? I desperately need it for my physics-courses! And for my health!
zibibo04 2 years ago
It's pedaling, not peddling.
Peddling is when you're trying to make a shady sale.
Pedaling is when you're on a bike.

@ijewa actualling the word is "pedalling" - not "pedaling"! - that's just some defective american spelling

Well, the Wii is the latest thing. And that requires some energy to play.
You would get kids earning their power and then being too knackered to use it!
(especially Wii Fit - ouch!)
