good video, it's sad that once you cross the boarder from VT to NY you can tell that you feel like you've entered a scene from deliverance. Don't get me wrong I'm a native New Yorker and lived in NY my whole life, not sure why this effect is true because it's only a man made imaginary line, I hope things change NY has a lot to offer.
I grew up in granville all of my life, just to florida you are not telling me anything i dont already know, I personally know what are the good and the bad. That comment esspecially goes for the people. Lets see someone comment on this I would like to see others peoples views. I will keep an eye on this now that I have discovered this video. Bob
Funny, of all the comments I have received on this video, yours is the first negative one I have come across. Maybe it's you that is depressing...LOL.
Dude you make it sound like its depressing living their and bud trust me it isnt. Granville is doing fine i love it their and i know other people that do. so stop makeing it sound so GOD DAMN DEPRESSING cus it isnt you moron
Hey!I grew up in Granville and always consider it my home town. I grew up in a time when Granville was in a lot better shape. You could drive down Main Street and every store was used and it felt like a small town. Now Telescope sucks and the union was broken. Half the stores are closed and to be quite honest, it s depressing.
I dont know how old you are or how long you have lived in G-ville.
I call it home with a certain amount of pride and a lot of great memories of a bettr time.
Obv it doesnt sound it and Telescope has always sucked u just git over it and move on this town is good now i love it here cant imagine it to be any different maybe thats y u left cus ppl like u make it sound so depressing
Thank - left Irving Ave in 58; haven't visited since 85. My dad worked at the "cotbed factory" as foreman of the engine room - that meant he crawled inside the wood burning boilers to clean them while everybody else had a vacation! I do miss the old Quaker St school & the Grange hall - both long gone.
You say it best Mike...It's Granville man.I'm surpised there wasn't more pics of the quarries. The mountains of rubbish piles and such.Working in a quarry and working at teloscope are probably neck and neck.Although I've only slaved at a quarry.
Am not an American, but a Welshman and was really taken by the view of Main Street. Thought much of my ancestor who would have walked that street - he now rests in Elmwood, Middle Granville with his fellow countrymen.
Thanks so much for making this vid. My dad is from Granville. I was raised and still live in San Diego out west. I've bee back to visit family a few times over my life and absolutely love the village. In fact, you passed my grandmother's church, the Episcopal Church. Again, thanks for posting.
OK...Saratoga may not be 30 minutes away...but I can hop on the bypass...run down 22..hang a left on 4 and a right on 149 through Fort Ann. That puts me at 87 and another 10 minutes later I am at exit 15 to the Spa City...maybe 45 minutes tops...BTW...I drive fast...lol.
oh yeh I forgot about that...I usually went through Glens Falls then turned on the highway which took an hour. But your way takes about 45 minutes, you're right.
great to see this.i grew up there too and we look about the same age (i'm 36)my work puts me through there from time to time and it sucks to see it dieing
no edwards, wilsons, house of pizza, hell even the ally is a"drying up" but i could go on and on
yeah,i wouldn't be suprised if it held some kind of "percapita"barroom record.i grew up thinking that evryonr got drunk and fought every weekend,,,then i moved..
At 4:44 you should have made a left turn. That's North Street and that's where all the nicest houses are in the whole town. Real old, beautiful colonial houses!
Granville is not 30 minutes from Saratoga Springs, I should know. Its 30 minutes from Lake George/Glens Falls, and from there another 30-35 minutes (depending on traffic) to Saratoga. Just an FYI :)
That was a nice trip around the town. Left there in 92 for the Army and could never live there agin, but I do like to come home too see people and to see how it's changing...or not changing. Telescope is a sad deal. My Dad works there, I think he has been there for 35 years. I have all telescope patio furniture and it reminds me of home when I use it. Talk about a shadow, that water tower was a part of life. Thanks for the video.
i was born and raised in San Diego, California, but my dad was from Granville. he moved out i think during the 60's when he joined the Navy. I've been back 5 times and love it, also it's such a culture shock for me coming from a big city. Still, it's such a beautifull area.
you got my grandma's church, my uncle's and my aunte's house in your vid. good stuff.
I lived in Granville from 77-82. It was a great place to grow up. I lived on Columbus St right next to the ball fields. I played baseball for Edwards Market and Rotary. Some of my best memories. Thanks for the video.
Well...the town decided to rebuild the main street bridge by Edwards...it was a mess and closed Main street for over a year. Edwards had to closed because of it...GOOOO Granville!
Thanks...I was afraid I would piss off some Telescope people with the negative comments...but what the hey...the truth hurts. Glad ya commented and keep an eye open for more video from our home town.
Cool...thanks for the response. Yes...you are correct about the quarries....but I drive fast!! LOL... BTW...When did you live here? I moved out in 78 and came back in 05.
Hey thanks alot I am thinking of moving up there so it was nice to see the area. I will be deiving up there to check it out soon.

Town used to be so nice in the 80's...bunch of empty stores now. Needs a big workplace to give the town people some jobs.

I believe Granville used to hold the record for "most bars in one town"...not joking either. But not anymore, obviously. Look it up.

Algies is done, Parkers is done...hell...There used to be more bars than hotel rooms in this town. But maybe that's a good thing.

Is Edwards open again now? Or was it closed for good?
garfield1994 4 years ago
Edward's store is closed for good. All their business was lost when they repaired the Main St. bridge.

I grew up in Granville as well. Thanks for the video!... a couple things.
1) It is more like 45 min from Saratoga than 30 min.
2) They are slate "quarries" not "mines" - basically mines extract metals and quarries extract rock
3) My dad still works at Telescope...you're right about it not being the place it used to be.
Thanks for the drive down memory lane.
