If you had a bunch of wild injuns on your tail planning to take your scalp, I think you'd be coaxing your little cowpony into becoming the 19th Century version of Secretariat, I'd wager....LOL
I can't believe you didn't mention the greatest blooper of all--how we're expected to look at the Monument Valley and believe it's Texas. John Ford never let geography get in the way of telling a good story. And if he wants the Rev. Clayton to get himself unsurrounded by magically having the Native Americans fall behind, that's OK by me.
Check out Ward Bond falling off his horse when it seems it misstepped on the river bed. He ad libs by walking it out and actually loses grasp of the harness when last seen. Love this movie!
a grain fed Western horse wou;ld outrun a half starved Indian pony that would account for the change in distance (this is the opinion of my daughter...not me!!!)
What on earth makes you think those western horses were grained? I suppose they were brushed before and after every ride, shod, and stalled what a stupid analysis. They are movie horeses ...the distance was because thats what the script called for.
Man, you call that a blooper? How about THE TEN COMMANDMENTS during the big exodus sequence... if you look into the sky in one of the shots, you can see a jet's contrail! Now that's some blooper!
ALL like 60 Indians fell into that little pool of mud? I guess there must have been a claymore mine or something right before the puddle... that would explain a lot... except the fact that this is in the wild west era...
your a genius man. you are so smart

For more fun - check the odd change of footwear worn by the Duke when his
character Edwards is kneeling down at the arrow marking the departure of the
Indian woman "Look" from their camp in the movie..
And then there's that Indian clearly breathing in his grave in an earlier scene.
But it's still a top western!!

In this same movie watch for the black car moving from the left to the right in the tree line back ground in the calvary crossing the icy river.

Alot of those older movies had discrepancies. Like one bullet knocking down 6 Indians at a time. The action is wha they were after.
