im going to stand by what i said.the katadyne is $335 and is a pump..the pump will fail !!! WILL !!! that = DEATH ! DONT bet your life on a pump. the sawer has no moveing parts+ it filters 1.0000000 gal. of water What i will bet is that the dude that told you katadyne is the best was wearing a northface jacket and some half dome mittens.. like all the dead bastards on mt.everest !!!! BE A SMART GEAR HEAD.
Klean kanteens suck I dropped my 40oz from about 2 feet and it dented in 2 spots and on one spot it now leaks. Save your money go with nalgene I have had one for seven years and dropped it several times not one issue.
@supersnipah08 No you are WRONG it is the fluoride that poisons you and no I do not drink city water.
My sister was told NOT TO EAT or DRINK for 1 hour after she got a fluoride treatment at the dentist, then he told her to contact a poison control center if she forgot and did drink or eat by mistake. Fluoride is a very toxic substance to ingest. I hope you didn't pay a lot for that class because you was taken. Type it into Google and read all the negative said about it. It's all true.
@Hutzjohn You are absoultely correct about fluoride. I have now had two of my medical doctors admit it is a dangrous poison that is too be avoided.
If you ask a good doctor in the correct manner, you will get the same answer...The tricky part is communicating that your eyes are open, but you dont wear a tin foil hat.
Most people will think your nuts the moment you bring up fluoride. I first learned it was poison over 10 years ago when reading an interview with the health minister of Japan.
@supersnipah08 You are correct fluoride isn't bad, it is life threatening just read the warning label on your toothpaste "contact your poison control center if swallowed right away ".
look up life saver water filter, filters viruses as well as parisites, also comes in a jerry can ,down side need to change filter every 4000/6000 litre, depending on what model also a little bit pricey,$170 for the bottle type and up to £300 for jerry can type
you should really filter it with a berkley to get the heavy metals out. also I've read watch out for a raccoon disease. a incurable worm infection. like ringworm
@narutonut48 i guess you have never been to lake tamagami were you can drink straight from the lake as long as you have a boat to go about 3 hundred feet from the shore ( away from the bacteria ) and stick your water bottle a couple inches under water so that none of the gasoline from boats get in it.....lake water ( from remote areas ) and rain water is very clean however i understand why you may think that its dirty do to the weird taste but that it only because theres no chemicals added
I think urban & suburban survival requires a more encompassing filter. If you live in a clean area and have seen the water reports this filter could be awesome. Otherwise, it probably won't cut it. The local environment contains all the regional contaminants. These come from businesses, spills, roadways, etc. The water from that roof could have some PCB & VOC issues. In fact, the roof might be a source of some very nasty contaminants depending on its construction (and viruses from bird poop)
@tinesthai What kind of filter will cover all of that? Distillation? Reverse osmosis? Tap water has some nasty chemicals too like fluoride and sometimes heavy metals. This is the best filter I could find that's portable.
@The67676767676767676 Yeah I've boiled water in my kleen kanteens a number of times. Placing tin foil over the lid creates a super efficient boiling vessel. The wide mouth versions are especially good since you can cook in them and clean them easily. I haven't thought of making a handle, though it's a good idea. Maybe a piece of wire for hanging over a fire would be good. I use my leather gloves to handle the kanteens.
I've used the ceramic drip filters from Monolithic on rainwater while camping for a couple years now with no ill effects. The Sawyer is very compact compared to the others out there. Could the taste be coming from the metal container and not the water? I've found if you put anything like gatorade or acidic in those types of containers they hold the flavor.
I've always treated the water first THEN filter, it helps with the chemical after taste.
You might be getting some taste from the nasty downspout!! When I go rustic camping I filter the water right from the river I fish and man is that water good!! I've never had any digestive problems with the filtered or treated water out of the river. Try to find water not from the downspout and see if it tastes better, is there a stream or river near by??
@MascisMan1 Good question. I think the company recommends treating the water so that they cover their butts. If it filters out 0.1 micron then it's safe to drink without treating.
This is a very excellent water filter. However, because I live on the coast near the Gulf I wouldn't dare filter rain water here because it has chemical contaminants that are probably in it. Some have said that some of the rain water was yellowish looking...
@rooftopeagle Berkey do make great products, however they are more purifiers than filters. So in other words, it will make muddy water safe to drink, but it does nothing to filter out the mud grit and other crap in it.
This Sawyer filter is also very light, highly portable and very flexible in its use.
@bwillan I just got a Berkey. Wanted something portable that also helps remove the damn fluoride that my municipality contaminates the water with. It doesn't improve the taste of the tap water but it makes it safer to drink. Tired of spending almost a dollar a gallon on bottled water. If I have to get my drinking water from the river by us, I have coffee filters that I can run the water through to get out the grit before putting it into the Berkey.
@rayme4raw The Berkey units I've seen in videos off their website is nowhere near as small and light as this Sawyer filter. Obviously you have different needs for water treatment than is being demonstrated in the video.
As we all know there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat. For Bug Out Bags, hiking/camping, this unit is really hard to beat in my opinion.
@bwillan You're right, my main concern was the fluoride in the municipal water supply. I got tired of buying bottled water by the gallon for $1 a piece. The Berkey I bought will do the first 1000 gallons for 31 cents and after buying new fluoride filters, it'll cost me 5 cents a gallon.
It came with a Berkey sport water bottle that I could use for camping or hiking if I decided to take up that activity. I'm glad that so many people are being proactive about water purification.
just boil that filtered water, you therefore eliminate the viruses.
