@MrPainfulTruth Rodrigo and his wife Victoria stayed silent for many years about the inspiration for the second movement, and thus the popular belief grew that it was inspired by the bombing of Guernica in 1937. In her autobiography, Victoria eventually declared that it was both an evocation of the happy days of their honeymoon and a response to Rodrigo's devastation at the miscarriage of their first pregnancy. from Wikipedia...

This was played at my brothers funereal he had watched the film unknown to me and he loved this piece by Rodrigo, (after hearing this at my brothers funereal i have never heard of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.).. it's a beautiful piece with so much feeling...life so short
We carried my best mates baby brother off of a plane back from Afghan, I was asked to play this at his funeral. Had to struggle through it for him, bloody hard trying to play trumpet whilst you're crying, RIP buddy - “Whenever the maroon beret is seen on the battlefield, it at once inspires confidence, for its wearers are known to be good men and true" - Field Marshall Lord Montgomery
Sir, playing that under those circumstances must have been close to impossible. I can't watch the bloody clip without tearing up. Every credit to you.
Reminds me of my days in the pit bands, I played for Hucknall & Linby Miners, Yorkshire Main and Markham Main. I loved playing the flugal horn and got a lot of positive comments on my tone etc when I played at Kneller Hall, before becoming the principal cornet player in the school band. Hesley Hall School nr Tickhill. God Bless my friend and tutor, Jack Argyle!
Reading over these comments page for this video all I can say is this; stop banging on about politics from a bygone era, leave discussing it to the boring old farts who get paid to it - was it bad in the Thatcher era, hell yeah it was. But others had it worse I can guarentee you; be thankful for your lot and focus on the music; how people can go on about asshole politicians when beautiful music such as this is flowing through your ears I'll never fully understand
Some of us can't forget about it. It wasn't an era just of politics, it was an era of one of the most evil women to have ever lived playing politics with people's lives. A woman that devastated the livelihoods of good, decent working class people in this Country. For some, it CAN'T be forgotten.
I note your name - cyber'pit'. Were you a pit worker? Maybe one of the SCABS from the Nottinghamshire area maybe that knived their brothers in the back and licked tory arse?
That's like me saying "oh your screenname is that so you must be some thick essex lad with a sex addiction so wtf you doing commenting on a situation that happened in Yorkshire", but I'm not cause that would be daft on my part the name comes from me being a fan of Roddy Piper who did a segement in the WWF called Piper's Pit
All I'm saying it - that situation could've been a whole lot worse and others elsewhere in the world did have it worse at that time and still do - so be thankful for your lot etc.I'm just a fan of the music and I view this film as an example of how music can unite people in hard times and how it can bring out the best in them as well as their strengths and how people can persevere even when they have everything going against them, so I'll just leave it at that really
Grimethorpe played for my mum & dads Ruby Wedding Anniversary party. A few people turned their noses up. They were expecting a disco. They are now converts to brass!
in ireland, caught part of the film last night,,,,, fantastic whati saw and yes, you tubes this piece tonight..... i remember thatchers england and was soo angered from afar at what her policies were doing to the working class..... we irish followed suit with free market capitalism and our societies, families and individuals suffered the same..... we need to unite and fight now, more than ever to crush capitalism.... and yes.... we must never forget
This song was haunting - hence I've searched for it on YouTube today.
Just to add that I may be an Essex guy but I have always despised tories (now add to that liberals) - and especially the anti-christ Thatcher. What that god foresaken whore did to this country can never be forgiven; nor should it ever be forgotten.
@EssexBoy696969 - dont spoil it by bringing politics into it! Yes, the Thatcher times were awful for many a miner, but you've got to try and "get lost" in the music - which isn't hard to do! You're right, it is kinda haunting... still love it loads! :)
Maybe you'd like to tell my Wife that I shouldn't bring politics into it. After all, it was HER Father, not mine, that worked at the Keresley Pit at Coventry; and ended up killing himself by putting an hose into his car at a quarry. She was the one that from the age of 14 grew up without her Dad!
Why did he do that in '86? Because he was up to his eyes in debt - thanks to a whore called Thatcher.
Now go fuck yourself - people like you don't know the heartbreak this whore caused
@EssexBoy696969 - okay, so your rude voice has been heard. I grew up without a father due to mining too, and, recently, my mother died due to the lack of funds for the NHS due to the Labour Government at the time. We could blame each party for something in this country along the way, many of which they deserve. Please dont tell me to do that - my vibrator ran out of charge last week...lol great tune everybody!! :)
What a great movie...Postlethwaite is superb. As someone from a mining village and a mining family, it continues to send chills down my spine time and time again. An industry destroyed by a foolsih government.....as my grandad said..."theyre gonna have to go back down theyre for that coal at somepoint"
Got to love those few Grimethorpe musicians messing at around 0:18'ish... This song, in this arrangement and performance has something special. Intense, deep, persistant sadness breathes through it, as do melancholy and the accepting of what is done. Yet it leaves me with the feelings of hope, defiance and pride. That feeling, even though everything goes ill, it'll be alright.
Pete's "directing" and Tara's flügelhorn playbacking, it's off (naturally!) they should've avoided that problem somehow.
@jaw1024 So you didn't watch the film cause of the bad miming. I did and I play in a band and I loved the movie. Even though I don't flail around like a violin player
@MrCagivaman No I watch this films loads lol :P I love this film and play in a band too, it's just several people in my band picked up on the miming and I can only see it now. Just commenting :P
@jaw1024 - you've got to remember that some are only actors - they dont know exact fingering of notes! Some of the band, however, are "real" brass band players, and obviously do know the notes! I think the greatness of the film outweighs this trivial point! :)
IMO, best rendition ever (!!!) of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. I should know... I've been collecting others' renditions for years now. Love this piece!
IMO, best rendition ever (!!!) of Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. I should know... I've been collecting others' renditions for years now. Love this piece!
RIP pete poselthwaite ....a nd as a lover of euan mcgegor and the daughter or a brass band pit player in the 80s this film means a lot to me and me dad
@mutley6161 Yeah I was joking :P If anyone's willing to pronounce the Spanish name properly over taking the easy Orangejuice route then fair enough :P
Everything comes together beautifully in this sequence : Tara Fitzgerald's enchanting performance as Gloria, straining to meet each note, trying hard not to let down her peers; Mark Herman and his editor cutting the scene with tremendous pace and rhythm; and of course that wonderful flugal solo by Paul Hughes.
I know the original wasnt with brass, but this dont 'alf make the hairs on my body stand up! Just something about it that gets to me each time i play it :)
Ardre Rieu did a concert and played this (he had his orchestra play the lead with bells) and the video got few hundred likes and 92 dislikes - looks like our uk brassed off wins!
Fantastic film with quite simply prefect casting.( I had no idea brass music could be anything like this until I saw this film either). Regardless of what your political views are on what happened or why it happened, where the director cuts to the death throes of a way of life during this music is simply inspired and can't fail to move you. It does not get any better than this!
I remember playing this with my brass band - fair enough, I was playing the Tenor Horn part which wasn't that exciting - but this song was one of the most moving pieces I've ever played. Concierto de Orange Juice! :)
just British can do that kind of movie... sense of humour, sadness and beautiful in one .... every time when I listen to the concerto I have a goose flesh ....
this film is one of the very best.so much sadness behind the humour.just like the full monty. they were very dark days for industries and workers. no change there then........
OK, OK. So the actors weren't actually playing their instruments. It was still an enjoyable film.
Pete Postlethwaite's rôle did him an injustice. However, his portrayal as "Tig Montague/Montague Tig" in the BBC adaptation of "Martin Chuzzlewit" will surely go down as one of the most inspired performances in dramatic history, on a par with Alan Rickman's portrayal of the "Rev. Obadiah Slope" in the BBC production of "Barchester Chronicles".
Wonderful film and music. Hardworking men sold down the river. What other country in the world would treat its own people like that ? God Bless all the miners and their families. Another British Industry killed by The British Government.
haha i put this on and listened to it whilst doing something else - as i didn't know the ending had come it sounded like there was one person clapping taking the mick at the end XD
This music is the dying swan song; we live with, for the forgotten north of England, as we broke our backs to make it a kingdom. And after they got what they needed ,we were left behind...........
Everyone has a taste for films, music, etc. That's true. But I'm sure that if you put a man with a horrible taste for films in a chair, in a room, and let him watch this one, he'll watch it until the last note comes out of that damn beautiful flugel.
I stayed over my friend on the weekend and she recommended I watch this film and as a brass player myself from a young age I have learn't how to really appreciate good brass music. This is absolute amazing piece of music, so beautiful. The film is great.
Does anyone know who actually played this version in the scene, Is it Stan Lippeatt or Mark Walters because they were both at grimey when this was made?
I live in Grimethorpe the village this film was made in and it is what life was like in those dark day!s of Maggie Thatchers rule. She and her government ruined the lives of so many in closing the mines.
The more I watch this film, the more I appreciate the brilliant performance given not only by Pete Postlethwaite but also by Stephen Thomkinson. The father/son relationship was acted sublimely by these two fine actors and enriched by a great supporting cast and wonderful music. This classic film will stand the test of time, defining the passions and politics of that turbulent time.
@winjenkins I echo those thoughts entirely, incredible performances from two great actors; the "Harvest Festival" scene and Postlethwaite's final speech moved me to tears
I watched this film because we're doing about Thatcher in English. The scene with the clown on the hospital gurney made me laugh and cry so much and the music just blew me away.
@TheSkyInOurHearts I used to watch it when I was little with my brother, it always made me cry even though I didn't fully understand all the politics in it. I found it ironic that a clown hung himself :'(
@mdirtydogg -- "How can anyone not like this amazing film?" ***** Because the benighted capitalism-thugs at NetFlix refuse to carry it and no one in America can see it. Same for the whole range of anti-ruling class films out of Europe and Asia.
after about 6 hours of practicing I can now finally play 1:30 ♥ (Played it by ear)

jaw1024 8 months ago
@jaw1024 So you didn't watch the film cause of the bad miming. I did and I play in a band and I loved the movie. Even though I don't flail around like a violin player
MrCagivaman 7 months ago
@MrCagivaman No I watch this films loads lol :P I love this film and play in a band too, it's just several people in my band picked up on the miming and I can only see it now. Just commenting :P
jaw1024 7 months ago
@jaw1024 - you've got to remember that some are only actors - they dont know exact fingering of notes! Some of the band, however, are "real" brass band players, and obviously do know the notes! I think the greatness of the film outweighs this trivial point! :)

IMO, best rendition ever (!!!) of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. I should know... I've been collecting others' renditions for years now. Love this piece!

it's illegal for brass players to call it by it's spanish name. Orangejuice forever
jaw1024 8 months ago
@jaw1024 - dont think it is...after all, I've played in a brass band, and we called it by its correct name and never got "in trouble"!
mutley6161 8 months ago in playlist Mix
@mutley6161 Yeah I was joking :P If anyone's willing to pronounce the Spanish name properly over taking the easy Orangejuice route then fair enough :P

Everything comes together beautifully in this sequence : Tara Fitzgerald's enchanting performance as Gloria, straining to meet each note, trying hard not to let down her peers; Mark Herman and his editor cutting the scene with tremendous pace and rhythm; and of course that wonderful flugal solo by Paul Hughes.

just British can do that kind of movie... sense of humour, sadness and beautiful in one .... every time when I listen to the concerto I have a goose flesh ....
liliannale 9 months ago 2
this film is one of the very best.so much sadness behind the humour.just like the full monty. they were very dark days for industries and workers. no change there then........

Pete P will be sorely missed.

A great film, and such a nice part of it. The music beautifully reflects the melancholy that they are feeling, yet at the same time indicates hope.
