  • Doesn't follow the book D: ALL the women are lines, not shapes!

  • I just saw this in my math class yesterday. I thought it was going to be another lame movie, but when it started it was really interesting. That why I came on youtube, because I'm trying to find a copy of the movie that I thought I would hate. LOL

  • @cali115 We're so glad you liked it. Our website is in the description and you can get the movie there. Thanks for the comment.

  • If anyone knows the Robo-Chi series, I think Spherius' eyes closely resemble those of Petal-Chi with pupils added

  • Lineland for the win.

  • My math teacher showed this to us in geometry class. She said it was the best movie ever. lol I don't know about that, but it was very creative and not mind rotting. It also made me really dizzy because camera angles panned and changed so rapidly.

  • Notice how they avoid the difficult lines as women situation. It was suppose to be parody anyways

  • @renetamakiroks I know! When we watched this in my metaphysics course after reading the novella, everyone was disappointed at the lack of sexism and classism.

  • How did I miss this?

  • ive seen this so many times, oddly in a highschool algebra class XD

  • watched this in class, quite good

  • How the hell are those eyelids supposed to work?

  • Dude. How do they see each other though? Mind blown.

  • thumbs up if you watched this because of bigbang theory

  • I read the book, and it is freaking awesome.

  • Watched the movie, and then I read the book. Good stuff.

  • I thought the women in flatland were supposed to be lines. I see no lines

  • @rotflmaopmpqxyz

I think they didn't portray them as lines in the movie to make it more politically correct....

  • @nameless527 It's a good read. One of my favorites :-)

  • This really was a great movie. Wish there was a place it could be easily viewed.

  • Thanks! It's easily available at the link in the description and you can support all the artists who made it.

  • wow, im buying this book

  • The Sphere should be voiced by Morgan Freeman

  • I watched this in my Geometry class. I really enjoyed it.

  • @JAdouble6 Meee TOOO

  • I'm so excited to watch Flatland in 3D!!! :D

  • if i went into flatland wouldnt i be flatten ? or would i just be standing in their world?

  • They have books? But books can't exist in flatland. Books needs landscape to be written and flatlanders are part of their landscape.

  • @Tabbimura It could be if it were written in something like Morse code. Dots and lines.

  • I so wanted to make that "now in 3d!" joke.

  • Ok the first time I saw this was in math class and I LOVED IT!!! this is an awesome movie!!!

  • This would be cooler if it wasn't suffering from low-budget-character-design syndrome.

  • omg this movie is awesome THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS! i cant wait for sphereland

  • arent women lines..

  • Where did this movie come from...?

  • This is the most boring thing I have ever watched.

  • Saw this movie in Maths today... We were like ARE YOU F*KING KIDDING ME

  • @TheEliiseee haha same here

  • Saw this movie in Maths today... We were like ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME

  • Saw this movie in Maths today... We were like ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME !!

  • This movie is just lol

  • I've seen this movie today with Maths. Would've been better in 3D!!!

  • I've seen this movie today with Maths, fell asleep. Would've been better in 3D!!!

  • I thought the ladies were supposed to be lines?

Thats what it said in the book O_o

  • Thumbs up if you watched this because of your geometry project/teacher.

  • honestly the people who made this movie MUST'VE been high

  • Wow...can anyone think of a movie in which the ideas from the book are not stupified beyond recognition?

  • @nirvrock77 One of the reasons the idea's from the book were simplified was so that kids can understand it. The book is to complex for children to understand. But that's just my opinion.

  • wtf women are lines

  • you have to be high or drunk to watch this and understand it.

  • have read the book and loved it, but seriously this film looks really CRAP.... WHY ON EARTH ARE THERE ANY GOOD REVIEWS ARE YOU JUST RELATIVES OF THE FILM MAKERS>>>> PLEASE

  • @miktruk , well I think it's AMAZING! The producer and both directors singed the book!

  • fuck yea!

  • we need to think 4th dimensionally! Back to the Future RULES

  • i bet the people from 4th dimension also made a movie regarding us..

  • I watched this in math class. Kinda cheesy but otherwise it's good, really makes you think

  • we live in 3d, imagine if there is 4d

  • @bytoom there is dude

  • @bytoom There is a 4d it's called time :P

  • @bytoom u said it

  • FEMALES ARE LINES 00:22 is a woman i think

  • @TheManBoulder

yeah in the movie they gave females shapes too

    Avoid the whole sexism thing.....

  • New goal: watch this movie on LSD

  • I watched this movie in math class to

  • We're watching this in geometry class. i was suprised by how legitimate it was

  • ughhhhhhhh, i hated this book so much, and now we have to watch it in math class.

  • Honors geometry now has me attempting to figure out how the fourth deminsion would look. And I agree with emilyx1244GG.

  • What on earth is there for 13 people to dislike?

  • This movie about dimensions, is removing an entire dimension from the original story.

    I find this ironic.

    And offensive.

  • Women are suppose to be lines why was kristen bell a hexagon !!!

  • Flatland The Movie - now in 3D !

  • How do they walk on grass and floors, if they only live in 2D, hence 1 plane?

  • @realisticHomeboy read the book.

  • Clearly they have "floors" of different colors in this flatland. There is no sense in that, since there is only 2 dimensions and the beings could go anywhere, since the "floor" would be a wall to them.

  • THIS MOVIE IS ANIMATED AND RENDERED BY ONE PERSON WITH LIGHTWAVE AND IT HAS BEEN MADE COMPLETELY IN ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS, WIKI IT UP IF YOU NEED PROOF, THUMBS UP!!!!!

  • @MistaBigBoss I gave you thumbs down for the caps.

  • The Square shouldn't have been talking to the Hexagon. Totally different classes.

  • It's bad that their eyes shift position, since it's impossible for their eyes and mouth to shift above or under each other. Otherwise perfect!

  • @AdamsTeinz women are supposed to be lines. And their mouth is supposed to be in the same area as their eye. Plus they dont use color and its not easy for them to go north on said plane.....Otherwise...perfect XD

  • I wached this movie in my math class - it is really good

  • @star4galaxy wow today i watched this in my math class too

  • @speedstealer14 omg me too1

  • Weren't the houses supposed to be in a 5 sided form or larger?

  • It's awesome that Martin Sheen is in this

  • there was another flatland movie that is longer and follows the plot better but i watched this one and it is pretty good

  • where can i buy this cd?

  • @yahjyeable check the video description for the store link

  • this is so a rip off of flatworld

  • @unevenlight The book was made in 1884...

  • @unevenlight Uh, that's because it's BASED on it.

  • @skinsvideos21 Nah, it's based on the *book* Flatland from 1884, not a short film from the late 1900's.

  • the women were points and the book was hilarious (published in 1884, a concept ahead of its time) ufo human link 'the eye of the needle' if this interests you consider sufi concept of 'tay al ard' 'folding the earth' what you now call 'quantum leaps' a misnomer, for finer concept try same site 'o ewes guys' to see where all those angles, i mean 'angels' come from

  • The flatlanders' bowels are not too realistic... fortunately:) In "reality" we would see all their guts and the whole inside of their bodies, which would be creepy:P Imagine, that a 4D creature looking at our 3D world is seeing all that what is inside us.

  • I have got to watch this....

  • I had to watch this for mathematics about calculating with dimensions XD

  • .. thanks for the tip...Here's one for you .Left you clues for you to find this note .If your now reading it...and watching the video.I guess it was too easy this time...Read the book in my teens.First read it to my son when he was 7.If you like this kind of stuff check out Godel,Escher and Bach by Douglese Hofstadter...

  • This movie better be promoting the use of consciousness expanding exercises! D:<

  • i wish it was Cubeland (3d to 4d)

  • @The3091996 But we don't know how to properly represent the 4th dimension, as we are but 3D ourselves

  • @The3091996 or club land.. where all disco emits from..

  • @The3091996 That might be hard to film. XD

  • I bet they play pong on their free time

  • I saw this in science class. It was a pretty good movie, educational, yet entertaining.

  • @Thing07 lol i saw it in maths

  • if you look from those "people" in the flatland's eye point of view everything else would only look like a line....

  • whyyyyyyyy?!

  • dude wouldnt this movie give you a tumor if you put it in 3D...........

  • me too!

  • stupid film!

  • @adriiarr Have you ever read the book?... Is a play of the book.. Ijust wait to see it

  • saw this movie today in geometry..its so trippy...makes you think what exactly in the 4th dimension...and if we can see what 2 dimentional can..then what would a 4thdimension be able to see that we cant you know?

  • This is so trippy. i had to watch it in math today :P

  • lol wtf???

  • Sorry. Scratch my previous comments about the women being lines (if I actually did say it. I can't tell cause my comments aren't up there in the list yet). Anyway, the women are not lines. They are very, very thin parallelograms (as stated by the Square in Chapter 16).

  • @KanavanKnight No the book clearly said they were lines >.< I have it in my hand it says the women are lines!!

  • @mercedeschachabaca I'm pretty sure they got rid of that for the movie because: A. It's a little complicated to describe the oscillating and why it's necessary, without disrupting the plot too much and B. It has some sexist connotations that aren't really appropriate for a kid's movie. (Not that I mind the fact the women are lines, but these kids' mothers probably wouldn't approve lol)

  • err... one more thing. I noticed more inaccurate stuff from the book. Another thing is there should be NO color in Flatland. It was banned after the Universal Colour Bill (Chapter 9).

  • To elaborate on the sight part, what I mean is: the female line (if you looked at it perfectly horizontally, it would stay equally "undim" the whole way. However, the circle's sides would be dark in the middle and dim near the sides).

  • Wow... lol... this movie is very inaccurate. The females are ALWAYS lines. No exceptions. There cannot be a female hexagon or circle or w/e (it was stated as the Law of Nature). By the way... @asyo They recognize each other through voice recognition, touching, and sight (by looking at the angles and how quickly the sides dim).

  • THIS IS THE COOLEST MOVIE EVER!!! I wanna see it in IMAX

  • how can 2d saw each other when facing?, in there point of view, they can only see straight lines(even cannot seen though), they cannot even identify their shape in their situations, if we geometrically analyse it

  • @asyo22 well they see line segments. the ways they recognise each other is covered extensively in the original book

this film seems to deviate immensely and not really have much resemblance to the book apart from certain core concepts like a flatland and the desire to educate about the concept of higher dimensions.

  • hmm i saw the movie but it wasnt like the trailer..in the movie you could see the insides of the flatlanders..and the sphere was yellow and had a flying car..

  • i saw this and iw ould be fucking amazed if there was 4D

  • dude..there is a 4d ..we live in it..movies are 3d but they arent real..cause they dont have the 4th dimension in them..if they did a movie would not end..its kinda hard to explain..the 4th dimension is time..we live in it..and there are 11 dimensions in total(for now)..we know only 3 of them..wow..9 unknown dimensions..thats what i'm amazed of :)..

  • 11-3 = 8, not 9. So, if we assume that 11 dimensions exist and we can perceive only 3 of them, then only eight dimensions can be unknown to us. Besides, what you talk about is only an abstract mathematical concept. In Physics we assume there are only 4 dimensions with the 4th being time, which is non-spatial, so we can actually exclude it and say that our (spatial) reality is three-dimensional. Talking about more than 3d is senseless outside theoretical analyses.

  • @asmodeus585

Time is spatial. Time and space are directly related to one another. Moving from point A to point B can be expressed both as a movement through space and a movement through time.

  • I saw this movie in geometry today. I wish they would make one about the 4D

  • @Hasharu They are.

  • dude women were totally lines in the novella... and it was explained as if x and y were width and depth as looked upon a horizontal plane...

  • Goddamnit they couldn't have eyes like that! Abbot hates u!

  • i heard this on Big Bang Theory

  • wait I dont get it.

Can WE see a line or a point? Imagine a line, the way we see it - it has thickness, which means it can be a rectangle at some point, soooo it means there's "height" to it....

  • You can't actually see a line because it has no thickness. When you "see" a line (one that has been drawn) what you're actually seeing is the representation of a line.

  • i agree..maybe there is no 1st dimension at all..everything has thickness..and since we live in a greater dimension we would be able to see the 1st 2nd and 3rd dimension..so..if the 1st dimension is only a point or a line..why do we see a thickness too..??

  • ...is this a joke?

  • Surprisingly, no it is not.

  • I love it!!!

  • how can they even have eyes and mouths?

  • This isnt the same version of the film ive seen....

  • I like how they use the mandelbrot fractal everywhere; but I still don't know why...

  • Woah, trippy!

  • i like the movie more than the book because the movie is less......sexist. i know you have to take the time it was written in to consideration, but it was hard to read with women being so insignificant.

  • It was written in 1884. Of course it's sexist.

  • I'm reading Flatland, and I think it's neat and interesting; however, it's taking me a long time to finish it because it puts me to sleep. I didn't know they had movie! That's exciting!

  • This is awesome. Although I think that only very intelligent people will like and understand this movie, and most people would find it ridiculous.

  • I read the book and I hope to watch the movie but I think there is a big mistake in it:

I don't think the square would be able to watch "threedimensionaly" because he comes from a world with only two dimensions. I think that if the square entered in the third dimension, he would see a lot of two dimensions changing.

And that's why that if we entered in the fourth dimension we could only watch a lot of three dimensions changing instead of a complete fourth dimension.

  • @erjuanjojj , you're right-- I had the same problem. Sphere would appear as a 2-D cross section, not as a 3-d object.

  • If you have seen the movie you may realise another mistake in the end? Do you know which I'm talking about? =)

  • yeah, in the book the main character gets put in an asylum for trying to prove the existence of the third dimension to the circles.

  • @erjuanjojj

    Yes yes yes...

finally someone else who understands my interpretation!

He is literally incapable of 'seeing' a 3rd dimension.

He could either see many 2d images... or a single, changing 2d image???

  • Have you seen the movie? It has another mistake in the end... We can keep in touch by email if you want! ;)

  • yea..i got your point..and i agree..but we allready are in the 4th dimension..i havent read the book..but i can understand what you mean..

  • It looks okay, but there are obvious errors from the book. The animation is nice, but beyond that it is just a "inspired by" then a "based off of".

  • Very Nice Film!!

  • Everyone stay away from the book FLATTERLAND!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why.. .after seeing the movie i kind of want to read it :)

  • flatterland by Ian Stewart is a great sequel to flatland. The contents reflect what has happened in geometry over the last 200 or so years. Euclid is only partially correct.

  • No no no no no you're not serious 0:49

  • This is much better than Flatland the Film!!

  • This movie made me more scared of geometry. I hate it enough with proving and how boring it is. My math teacher made us watch it. Man i hate geometry

  • 1. Females are lines

    2. There are no colors (they were banned)

these are only the opinions of a ninth grader, but i think they made Flatland much less complicated than in the book

  • The books is REALLY AWESOME.

Any intelligent book-loving fan of other dimensions and old school science fiction will be in love with it.

I haven't seen this film but just looking at the trailer here is disappointing to me. The characters are drawn all wrong.

It really messes up the purity and exactitude of the story.

  • i thought the females had to be lines?

  • it's hard to animate a line

    but yes, they are

  • @1lilyannepotter1

ya, that was kind of a big plot point (no pun intended) in the book. I wonder why the changed that?

  • @DutchIrishSimmons I am guessing because the portrayal of women as the simplest of 2d figures would no go over well with the PC police.

  • @1lilyannepotter1 The females were portrayed as lines in the original novel as a satire of Victorian society, which perceived women in much the same way as the women of Flatland were perceived. That aspect of the story is no longer relevant to our time, so they were able to leave it out.

  • @1lilyannepotter1 they did. but like all movies nothing is like the book, this, so far sickens me. additionaly the book is quite bordering dull if you ask me.

  • how the fuck would you even be able to see in a 2 dimentional world? its not like you can look down on it like we can

  • Do not read this book!!! Seriously you will get more satisfaction out of any geometry text book. I think this is the book that the derogatory meaning 'Square' originated from. If it isn't it should be because 'E. A. Abbott' had to be a virgin, I don't see how anyone would waist the time to write this, over wasting time on masturbation... seriously!!! If paper were to have feelings every page would commit suicide if it were in this book.

  • look at 0:18 how can be a areal and a cable at the TV, if it is a 2d world.

and at 0:58 how can his suitcase have a bottom?

  • Call it artistic licence. Ultimately, life couldn't exist in just two dimensions, as anything such as capillaries or a trachea would result in the organism being sliced in half. This book and film are more about creativity, and a very good way of explaining higher dimensions to our 3D minds.

  • I dont agree what if a 5D being said that of us it would be totaly different but IMPOSSEBLE that's kind of early in our science knowlegde about dimentions

  • @QwertyTSecond Indeed, the book is much less about describing how life could operate in two dimensions and much more about priming the reader to think in two dimensions, how to perceive three dimensions from two, and thereby how to begin imagining moving from three to four and so on.

  • Carl Sagan would have liked this :)

  • wouldve been good in 3D

  • "wouldve been good in 3D".... haha, well said, too funny

  • @RollerCoasterTycoon8 do you realise how ironic that would be!
