  • was genau sit jetzt tape return? also ich habs bis jetzt immer so gemacht das ich meine monitore / kopfhörer einfach an mein interface angeschlossen hab. mach ich da was falsch oder was bringt das überhaupt? :D

  • What is the exact importance of the pre amp? does it compress the sound to give it proper clarity?

  • @fallingindrive need a pre amp of some kind to boost the mic level signal to line level, or to get a very weak signal up to a loud one. pre amps can help color the sound to alter tonal quality, if you want. some can be very clean and help to capture really the tone of the instrument itself or you can add more color if its tube driven for instance but really, the purpose is to boost the mic level up. some units have eq and dynamics in the same chassis and are called channel strips. hope it helps!

  • You are great Owdio engineer. Vaarry nace.

  • Excelent video!!

  • I MISS WIERD AL-YANCKOVIC LOLLLLLLLLLL

  • one love

  • Dude I've seen a mixer like that before is it a digital mixer?

  • will the sound get bad if I do this in a normal livingroom? or is this just to get it perfect? I have the equipment, but not a real studio.

  • love the way he says audio...... OWDIO! LOL

  • @wertaw Yeah, not everybody talks like they do in Oklahoma. Shocking, huh? Well, I'll let you back to your meth lab...

  • I have a home studio based around mainly a tape ADAT (8 tracks). Also I have a Boss digital rig...I use it just to master CDs and for the USB, as I like analog mixers better... I'm looking to replace my worn-out Mackie CR-1604. I'm looking into the Behringer Xenyx line. These are billed as "live" mixers, although they do have post-EQ direct outs per channel. What, then, would keep these from being suitable "studio" mixers? Thank you, Sir.

  • @gwugluud most studio consoles have an input section and monitor section seeing as you have to have proper levels to not distort the recording. the live console on the other hand is input only, since youre mixing for yourself and the audience simultaneously. thats really the biggest difference but you can use them interchangeably, but its more difficult with a live mixer in a studio set up

  • hey...

  • Hi, My name is Rich, I am a gear head and I have a 32 track digital studio. I have a few questions and want to meet someone online to discuss different techniques. My first question......Tape vs. Digital, what is your opinion? I like a combination of both. My second question, Going direct in with Electric Guitars and Bass Guitars or mic"ing an Amp.? Can I hear your opinion. Thanks, Rich

  • im loving the video how would i connect a mackie onyx 1620 i to a an apple mac would i need anything other equipment to make this work

  • @TheMillzy96 like an audio interface for example would i need 1 or would it be fine

  • aha...cubeaudio studio also ;)

  • Viel dank for putting andy mckee in the background!

  • what can I use to send the signal for the recording room to the control room

  • i wanna buy the preamp mic 737 but i don't have the idea what would be the sound on my mic c 414 xls thankyou

  • Its always nice to know ppl are watching and ur not wasting time lol

  • Hi Schehf,is a very helpfull video, very clear.....i like it,i wanna ask you something,i need for my home studio a preamp to use mic and instruments but i can't decide because are many different types out.. that makes it difficult to decide, please any idea for that from you like a user of many preamps converters..thank you...Alex

  • what mixer do you have there in your video

  • Kjaerhus audio has a nice comp. too with sidechain option!!

  • VERY informative, thankyou for this, i've been panicking about a trial recording session coming up and wanted to go back to basics to keep it clear in my mind, and this was really helpful, keep up the good work my friend!

  • some one who knows what he talkin about it's about time thanks !

  • @bboysince87

This stuff is not to make music, is it to capture music.

  • @schehf Well said!

  • @schehf deep

  • @bboysince87 agreed

  • @bboysince87 It's more about capturing the performance! If you use cheap quality studio equipment most of the time it will show no matter how good of a engineer you are! We as engineers are unable to compensate 100% for the limitations of low quality equipment! Not saying you should break the bank but you should defiantly spend it where it counts! You will thank your self in the long run trust me I been there done that!

  • @bboysince87 you mean you can use simple recording programs but ProTools is the best software because of the compatibilty, low latency and proffesional routing. why dont they have Pyramix if we are talking about luxury software..

  • so, what kind of ixer are you using? What do you recommend for me for recording and performind?

  • @anaranjadoX375

We use the one in the back you see: Mackie d8b.

What you should use depends on what you are recording and how.

  • THANK YOU I LOVED THIS!!

  • THANK U I LOVED THIS !!

  • Finally, a studio instructional video by someone who actually sounds like they know what they're talking about.

  • Very helpful video Chris. I'm thinking of getting a Mac Pro quad core 3.2Ghz. Good idea for recording? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • @fuse511 i got a mac quadcore 2.4 the original 2007 version and it kicks ass still. definately a good choice for a cpu by all means

  • Can you please tell me if a L2000 samson mixer (20 ch) will work as well as the M-Audio projectmix mixer for recording? Im planning to buy the samson for recording and performing, but I need to know if it will give me good quiality for recording as well. What do you recommend?

  • @anaranjadoX375

Sorry never tested it or seen it.

  • @anaranjadoX375 i dont belive so cause if your using the project mix io in protools, protools only allows m- audio products to work with it!

  • @blueisournew2sun wow, you're a moron. M audio is owned by AVID, M audio makes up a very small fraction of protools acceptable interfaces. all AVID, even Apogee accepts pro tools now.

  • Thanks mate brilliant video learned a lot

  • you must be rich to build one... and very great video it kinda helped me.

  • Hello Chris, I have a home studio in Brazil and would like to upgrade, now I use to record: AT 3035 mics, Audio Technica MB DK-6, SM57 (Mexico), SM58, octane preamp M-Audio interface, M-audio Delta 1010, pro tools Mpower 7.0. Can you help me build a good setup? vc me indica (mics, preamp, interface) for me to reach a satisfactory outcome? I appreciate your patience is with God!

  • @Renato27ify

Sorry, this is just too much to think about.

It is budget, what you do with it, where you get it and so on. Ask a local guy please.

  • well said.. :)

  • this has got to be the best video ive seen for recording DO MORE GAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

  • I have watched a lot of Recording videos, but yours are very very good, and are very interesting! Well done, informative, and a joy to watch. Thanks for posting these!

  • Hi Chris, two questions:

    - which is the best or recommended the microphone lower of $300 for voices?

    - which is the best or recommended the Preamp (valve) lower of $400?

    Thanks.

  • @osvtorr

I really can't say that. I only know what I used.

  • in fact for recording well it's really important to treat your room with some acoustic diffuser and absorber to correct the reverbe and prevent awfull effect. it's more important than high end equipement.

  • ARE YOU ON THE ANDY SNEAP FORUM

  • Do you personally think it goes faster to record tracks these days , because of faster equipment or is it the same as 10,15 yrs ago, because you need so much more time to get things right with the current sound quality standards?

  • @iwannabeyourdog90

You don't need more time to get a good quality standard.

The signal path is the same.

Only the mixer and the recording device is digital now and that is way more flexible, faster and what is most important:

    It allows mistakes.

  • especially when it comes to electronic music I mean

  • what would you say about the recording technics generally today?

I mean not the creative process of doing music, just finishing a track..

do you record faster nowadays than 15 years ago or has it no real difference...

I just heard it took ages to go through DATs to find specific songs and stuff...?

  • Great job on this video! Check out our video, shot at Kaufman Astoria Studios, a legendary studio in NYC. The video shows a song being completely produced in one day. There is a free download of the recording available also.

  • Do you connect a MIDI keyboard through midi into a mixer or do you get it done a also with usb?

.....and do you know for which kind of big recordings yo need this big ssl with 1000000 knobs on it???

  • @iwannabeyourdog90

You connect a midi keyboard to a sound module, synthesizer or sampler.

The midi keyboard itself doesn't have any sound, it just sends midi notes.

Another device has to make the sound and this you connect to the Mixer.

You can connect a midi keyboard to the computer too and play software synthesizers and more.

Big mixing consoles are a studios choice, you can use preamps as well.

For big and good recordings the preamps are very important. Big SSL's have that.

  • @ schehf... MOM, I think there was a cheaper way to record in the eearly days., its called DAT , I guess the quality was as good as modern DAW? I dont know am I right?...and do you think its still usefull to record on dat ?

  • @iwannabeyourdog90

Dat was cheap yes, but you can only record stereo on it, not multitrack.

It was just for the master.

  • i like your videos on recording, they are pretty informative and don't seem dumbed down (expert village). thanks for the video.

  • sae... tztztz

  • dude sounds like arnold schwarzenegger... haha "de meik.."

  • you have some very nice gear, love the pre-amps!!!!!

  • Sorry, dude. I stopped it as soon as I saw the D8B. HATE those stupid mixers.

  • @kermitneville nothing wrong with the digital 8 bus

  • @theemyogasinger Whatever, former Mackie employee. The fact is that it was a glitch factory of a mixer. A floppy drive? A toilet icon? You've got to be kidding. You can't give those things away anymore, and nobody will service them. The end!

  • @kermitneville

you dont know shit about anything, learn your facts b4 u start bitchin, i've done some serious mixes on thos puppies, yes they are older, but u can still do alot on them! not saying thats what i use, but hey, some peep hole gotta start somehwere

  • This is a GREAT tutorial, thanks for posting!

  • Where are you from cuz i love ur accent hahahahhaa

  • This is the "cubeaudio" Studio in Germany :-)

  • You answered so many question i had in this vedio, can't wait till the next one

    Thank very much.....

  • The basics in fucking great style!!! Congrats from Brazil!

  • I used to wodner, even at a young age...which means 14 in 1964, just how they got that great sound of voices in warner bros cartoons...Foghorn Leghorns full voice, that special reverb that was always present...

Finally met someone who directed an orchestra on the warner bros. stage. It was simple. It was the warner bros stage itself.

  • thanx broooooooooooooooooo

  • great video. and one of my favourite andy mckee tunes in the background :D

    thanks for sharing!

    peace,

    martin

  • I just got a Tascam TM-D1000 and a DA-38 dat machine.

Just basic ins and outs of all of this is making me feel very dumb.

Hopefully these vids will help a bit.

  • you are very good at explaining!!!!

  • Excellent video, 5 stars. Thank you very much.

  • Amazingly informative video!

I have Pro Tools M-Powered with Firewire 1814 interface (it has pre amps in it), and im considering focusrite 428, or avalon 737. I cant make up my mind at all! I dont have crazy good mics just an apex 460, and mostly its for acoustic and vocals. Any opinion on which pre amp i should go for?

  • @TheUnbornBand

Understandable dillema. Look into the Millenia Media Origin, This has the preamp, eq and comressor, but each module can be either tube (like the 737) or Solid state like the 428 in EACH module. Also you can switch the input transformer in or out. This is not a gimmicky device. it is really one of the best in the world and you have so many color options. tube pre, ss comp, tube eq or any other combination. But nothing is more important than a great mic. It is an industry favorite

  • check out the info on Universal Audio's 610, and it's various brothers, the 610 MarkII, and the 2-610. Extrememly popular, and famous stuff. Under 2 bills...sort of between 1300 and 1600. Mic choice isn't that easy..(Like just getting a neumann)

  • Wait, you really preamp a keyboard!? My synth outputs at +4. Is this necessary, or just for added "coloring?"

  • @mortald Ypo preamp everything, even though you don't have to gain anything. But this is how you connect to your mixer.

I mean even if you directly connect your keyboard to a mixer, there is a preamp in the mixer.

  • @schehf you preamp only analog signals digital signal do not require a preamp, My fantom g6 is hooked up digitally, also you said that even if you directly connect a keyboard to a mixer, there is a preamp in the mixer, yes, but that depends on if your going through xlr or line input with line input it bypass the the pre's that's how your hook up your external preamps, right?. how is the Avalon preamp working out im about to buy one.

  • @mortald

The keyboard is line level so theoretically you can go right into the interface. a good preamp, especially a tube one just adds a nice color that will really fill out the digital signal of the keyboard in a pleasing way.

  • You do not want to use a big room with reverb in it. You always want to have control over your reverb. This allows you to make the drums have a tight sound, or a really big sound just on the snare, while no reverb on the kick drum, etc. Runaway reverb is a big no-no for drums. Not to mention that you'll need to place boom mikes for the over all drum sound to properly capture the dynamics of the room. We record all drums in the dead room which allows us to control reverb.

  • @LogicStudioMadness I like to record in a very small or in a very big room. A big room that has a good sound

so you can put good room mics up and make it sound nice.

But of course it al depends on the drumset and the music style you are recording.

  • Hi Chris, I like that big room sound too. I like big room sounds with vaulted ceilings, rooms with angled walls, even extra hard walls or extra high ceilings. With professional sound gear I achieve all that and more without having to locate that kind of room. I especially like the sound of a large room with soft wood on the walls and vaulted ceiling with thin carpet on the floor. It's easy replicate such rooms with warmth and you don't get stuck with the sound if you want to change it.

  • @LogicStudioMadness

This is true. I mean big rooms are great for drums, but not because of the reverb. Big studio rooms are not particularly reverberand by design. The big room has an advantage for drums because it can facilitate lower frequencies, if thats the sound you want.

  • Cooles Video, Respekt.

Ich habe hier noch eine Seite mit sehr guten Recording Tutorials entdeckt. Hab mich da angemeldet und kann es nur empfehlen.

    mixing-tutorial. de (<-- Leerzeichen entfernen)

  • Well done, a very good information video. You know exactly what you are talking about, i am currently studying music technology and everything you say is correct.

  • dude I LOVE your "in flames" covers :D

  • The sound of this video stinks! Unbelieveble!

  • bilder von Cubeaudio ? heehe..

  • cool video. learned something from it.

  • analogue on tape cost more than 100 thousand dollars?? seriously???

    OMG!!..thank god for DAWs..lol....

ridiculous thats why before softwares became big there were only few producers in the game...lol..imagine an equipment being 100k to just record....only the rich can afford that...

  • Yes for analoge recording you need very high qualiry equipment, that's why a 15 minute tape, costs 75 Euro something and you can use it for a limited time. Maybe 5 recordings.

  • @schehf you can get used studers for WAY less than 100k. maybe 150 for a roll of tape. also got to get the take up reel. maintain it. but it wont cost 100k anymore. i've seen many nice studers on ebay for very cheap

  • @andrewenson

My point was telling people that good analog equipment is more expensive

then good digital equipment and that it is harder to work with.

  • everything has its pros and cons... Daw = Pro.. Amount of Producers = Con.

  • Rofl is it ACTUALLY 100k?

  • @dopemcee haha depends on what kind of tape man. 2 inch tape is hella expensive and i've worked on tape. you do NOT need more than 100k to get an analogue setup. yes you need more than 100k to get an amazing setup but you can easily get a good analogue setup for less than 30k. i have a analog/digital setup and i've spent more than 40k so far.

  • keep doing this you actually make sense and arent just trying to sell me pro tools

  • thanks a lot for this video

  • hey there, very nice vid

i was just wondering is the toneport considered a preamp?

and if it isnt, would i need one to get the best results?

  • The toneport is a digital amp modeler, so it simulates the sound of a real amp + cab.

    You can't use it live.

Line6 live sound is provided with pod and their amps.

  • i see, thanks a lot!!

i just have one more ques for now, how great would the difference be between the "line 6 toneport/pod" and the normal "direct sound with asio4all"

once again, thanks for your help

  • I really don't know, sorry.

  • thanks a lot anyway, and sorry if i bothered you in any way,

    keep up the awesome work!

    \m/

  • you can use it live, but you need a computer to run the sound modelling software, so it is not ideal. Youcan get a toneport live version as well.

  • The toneport UX1, 2 and 8 have preamps, the same number actually. Only UX2 and 8 have 48V Phantom power, so if you have a condenser you will need one of these.

  • thanks!

i use a guitar with passive pickups, with the studio pod, will i be able to achieve sound similar to that of actives? and will it also remove the hum from the pickups?

i would really appreciate any help here

    thanks again

  • The thing with active pickups is that they have a much more sensitive transient response and output level, so you're kinda screwed there if you're after the active sound, but you can do alot of stuff in gear box.

Again, the hum you hear is probably a amins hum, so it comes from the electrical grid you're plugged into, there might also be a wiring fault in your pickups. Not much to do there sadly. There is a hum reducer fuction in gear box which might help, other than that you need a gate.

  • I have the toneport UX1 & there is a built in Hum reducer. All you do is set your guitar to the noisest pick-up & turn the volume up & hit the Hum reducer button. Then it cuts out the hum

  • 'For My Father' :D Great tune.Thanks

  • how much is the pro tool and the pro tool LE cost?

  • Why didn't you mention Sonar as a choice in DAW?

  • do you output your mixer into the line in on your line 6 ux2?

if not how do you connect to your computer?

  • My mixer has 4 outputs.

2 (sub Outs) are going in the Line In of the UX2, to

get microphones or 2 guitars in the Ux2.

the Ux2 is also connected to the Mixer and the Main Outputs go out of the mixer and into my speaker amplifikation.

  • avalonnnnn gimie. nice choice. super clear great transient response.

do you have your mackie coming into interface via lightpipe?

  • Yes, Adat Light cables.

  • thanks wery much for all this info,...its wery pro

  • If I am recording in a small apartment, and can't record at really loud volumes, would you say a condensor mic would pick up the sound pretty well?

  • Depends on what you are recording.

    Acoustic guitar and vocals yes.

electric guitar, a dynamic mic will do.

  • I'd be micing a guitar cab, heavy gain - lots of distortion. The problem with that is the neighbors complain when i mic because i have to turn the amp up loud to get a decent sound on the recording. Will a condensor mic pic that up at lower volumes?

  • No, doesn't change anything.

If the amp sounds bad, any mic will catch a bad sound.

Isn't there a thing that can lower the volume of the box, but the amp can be turn on way more?

  • You could build an isolated booth for your amp.

A wood box with Auralex panels inside, with a self made door and holes for the cables needed. It must be bigger than your cab+mic stand

  • I've heard about these, but don't know how loud they still really are. Are they going to cut down all noise outside - i.e., if my amp is at half volume, is it still going to be quite on the outside of the box?

  • basically the thing to remember is that condenser mics pick up more natural sound from what your recording (more intament) as a very iffy rule. Dynamic mics are more for high spl levels again as an iffy rule.

  • wow an actually decent acoustics tutorial. People really overlook how important your mix room acoustics are. One thing he didn't mention is how important decent monitors are. If your not replicating your recorded audio correctly, your mix will not be correct.

    But overall decent tutorial

  • I see. Thanks for the reply. More vids to come HOPEFULLY ? lol

  • GREAT TUTORIAL. In the example you gave (Pre-amps), The Avalon was a Tube Pre-amp, The 2nd one was a Tube Compressor & Mic Pre-amp, & the third a transformer Pre-amp. Whats the difference ? Im a newbie to the subject & want to understand the terminology. Why so many different Pre-amp, their roles etc. Thanks

  • Cause the Avalon is a good channel srtip for vocal recording.

The Focusrite is very good drum recording.

And the Tl Audio we just tested and it sounds good.

  • Hi Schehf! Greetings from Moscow,Russia.

I was wondering, what do I need for recording if I am on a budget but I dont want any extra noises...

Tried Toneport - they suck as well as behringer! What do you advise me of?

  • REcording acoustic guitar and vocals.

  • hey! God blessed you alot and thank alot for that info.

  • great information man, thank you so much

  • Very useful, thanks. I finally know why there´s something as tape returns, always thought they were pretty useless.

I still would like to know something: I have a fairly cheap interface (UX2) with 2 mic pre-amps on it, but I am not so happy with the sound. If I buy a new pre-amp, and connect this to the XLR inputs of the interface, will the interface's pre-amp "color" or spoil the sound again, or will buying a better pre-amp really make a good difference?

  • A good preamp is always better than the toneport preamps, but connect it to the line inputs, not the mic inputs.

Otherwise the mic preamps of the toneport will damage the good sound.

  • Ok, thanks for the information, but I see that most pre-amps (except for some above the 1500 euro mark) only have an unbalanced single 4" jack output. (And XLR of course, but pretty hard to put a XLR cable in the line-in's.) I would say that I would need two unbalanced, or one balanced, to connect it correctly, or am I wrong?

  • There are xlr to balanced line cables.

    So no problem with that.

  • what brand is that mixer???

  • Mackie d8b

  • Always great to hear good info on recording re-iterated. I continue to pick up tips from people like you. GREAT TUTORIAL. Thanks

  • Thanks a lot for posting this. There are too few videos on this stuff that are actually helpful. This is great though.

  • this is awsome record my band man.

  • Well this all sounds good, but is it realy nessesery with sooooooo manny options to record anyhting :S

I mean, As long as you're a good player, what difference does it makes, The beatels recorded once with just one mic in a basement, still the got famus?

Music is getting complicated with all these modufyings^^

  • In recording 'Once size fits all' doesn't apply so you need options. The difference between the Beatles recording then, and artists recording now is technology.

Back then you were very limited. Recording 48+ tracks then wasn't possible nor would translate very well through a mono low-fi speaker ;)

  • Recording grew with technology. Thing about going from an 8 track to a 2" 24 track recorder. Bigger consoles, more routing, more outboard gear, more sounds, better acoustics, better acoustical knowledge etc etc etc. Recording is incredibly complicated these days (in a professional setting) and I enjoy it immensely :)

  • the beatles also used some of the rarest most expensive recording consoles in the world, at abbey road, to record most of their biggest hits that they got famous from.

  • Can i get the same performance from recording a electronic drum kit then Acoustic kit?

  • You can get almost the same sound.

But you can't get the natural sound from a drummer.

Because a drummer don't hits everything in the same loudness and tempo.

And whe he hits something not that loud, it sounds different too.

The VST Instruments for drums are getting better and better, but are still not quite there.

  • 5:20-5:30 lol

  • i'm sorry for your wasted time........ can you send me your email add because i'm really interested in recording studio..can you help me??? its ok if not i understand your schedules...... thanks... i'm only 17 but i have knowledge in instruments... and i'm a fast learner.hehe.. thanks again....for your time...

  • it's only purpose is sending the signal you want to record to the track you want to record.?? so if i use software for routing the order goes source-preamp-computer???

  • The routing will be done with the interface, in your example.

If the interface contains preamps, then your order is right.

  • what if I'll use software in routing and software in recording.. how do i set this up?

because you said that a routing is done after recording how's this??? and i use only one computer.... because if i record i skip routing and if i route how do i record....

  • Nope, routing is before recording.

    Routing is:

sending the signal you want to record to the track you want to record.

Example: You have connected 20 mikes to your mixer. Now you route Mic 2 on track 5 of your recording device, mic 3 on track 10.

    How you want it.

Normally all is connected the way it is recorded. Mic 1 to Track 1. But it don't have to be that way.

I don't understand what you mean with software for routing.

Every good soundcard has a routing software included.

  • Schehf you are amazing greetings from Mexico, do you also produce other bands? i think totally worth it

  • I am working in a studio, so yes.

  • Ok then, so.. you should produce us je je
