You would have been better off shooting a doe. Big bucks just don't appear out of nowhere, you have to let the little guys grow up. I went for or five years without killing a buck, so I could drop a 180 class with my bow this year. I'm not trying to be disrespectful just trying to inform people to make the quality of the hunting in the west better. Good camera work though.
I want to thanks you guys for actually hunting by foot. I see 9 out 10 hunters these days chasing the bucks down on motorcycles or atvs that it is sickening and not even real hunting. just high speed target practice.
if you protect all of the two points you actually create a weaker genetic pool. My family use to own over 2,000 acres above hells canyon. I currently hunt WA, near Asotin, where it's a three point rule. My dad has hunted both ID and WA for fifty years, and is a veterinarian, which is why I am confident in my genetic comment. Also, at least in WA there is a genetic two point. Where even eight year old deer only have forked horns, no eye guards. You WANT to hunt those.
@jordanhaasmusic it depends on the existing genetics in that area. this unit has produced a lot of record bucks in the past and still has a lot of big bucks....they have become very crafty with all the hunting pressure. it boils down to genetics, age and nutrition. this area still has the genetics, but the deer do not have the "age" factor in their favor......that is why is needs to be a trophy, general season unit. i know this area and am confident in my statement as well!!
@idahochas You are correct about this unit being one of the top trophy units in the state - more bucks in the book out of this unit than any other...but only 1 since 1982 (the year I was born)
As for how to manage it, I don't know. I don't profess to be a biologist - I like venison and I make no apologies so shooting a legal buck.
hell you guys did a good job even for a forky all of that hiking and crap is worth it im always thankfull when i go hunt for mule deer no matter wat size buck it is.
Thanks! I love it when other people "get it." The hunt isn't about killing a monster buck - it's in the experience, and this was quite an experience for sure!
makes sense to me now. i hunt that unit....or used to up until a couple years ago. forkies are about all you see anymore. a 20" 4 pt. is a good buck in that unit. you can see some toads up high or on the late hunt. still, you can whack 2 pts. all day long in that unit without killing yourself. thats the problem up there. too many people and they kill whatever they see. fish and game needs to turn that into a 4 pt. or better unit. plus, put a general hunt on the bears. way too many of those too.
First time we'd ever hunted that area - ended up being less than impressed. Seemed there were people just about everywhere you turn - we did get away from them, but the constant drone of ATVs in the background reminded us of their presence. Oh well - it was still a fun hunt, but I doubt that we'll be back to that area.
I'm not even sure what the unit number is - it's the squaw butte area outside of Emmett, though. Still part of 32A, I think. Didn't see any elk on this trip - we were pretty low.
Yeah - this pack wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't of been in the dark! Moose with no horses...now that's a lot of work! I've done a lot of elk that way, but never a moose!
No one listens to hunters safety regardless of how good you are a hunter unless then you like to kiss ass. Anyway who's anyone to judge.

6 or 7 shots! Good god! With the price of ammo these dats it would have been cheaper to buy a side of beef. Just kidding. Good job.

Thanks for watching. You just might be right....scratch that - you are right! But it was fun and the venison was delicious!
The memories are in the hunt - not in the kill.
