Grumpy Jii-san remembers the rains like it was yesterday

It's funny. I was at a panel at a covention in Orlando called "Anime Classics that everyone should see" almost a week ago. The guys at the panel were talking about Isao Takahata and they recommended both this anime and Grave of the Fireflies. I obviously seen Grave of the Fireflies and I loved it. But, I never heard of Only Yesterday until I was at that panel.

Good review. I watched this anime over and over again. The film is meant for adults, but I guess primary school children can enjoy watching it. I think that the director is a keen observer of human nature.

My heart warmed to see John Lasseter geek out about Miyazaki’s films.

I'm so glad to see you review this. And five stars too! It's this film combined with Grave of the Fireflies that has convinced me that that, though far less prolific, Takahata is probably an even greater filmmaker than Miyazaki. I am so glad they showed it on the Turner Classic Movies Month of Miyazaki, as I probably would never have seen it otherwise.

Maybe they'll do that again some day. Otherwise, sadly, few here in the states will have the opportunity to see it.

Great review. I really like this anime and I also think it is underrrated. I never quite understood what is so extraordinary about a pineaple, cause I live in a tropical country. But even this scene was very funny, at least in my opinion. Keep up the good work!

@TheTalespramos You might consider the pineapple scene to be as much a nostalgic look at the time as well as the place (like the black and white TV). The flashback is in the 1950s (or early 1960s). Transportation was much slower and more expensive back then, so "exotic" foods weren't available world-wide as they are today. There was a pile of pineapples at my local grocery this morning.

Good review. I have heard of this anime but I never got a chance to watch it, unfortunately. I also had problem with mathematics myself when I was young, multiplication was my biggest problem.

@rossdude I'm not sure a US release is planned anytime soon. Given the low cost of the UK version, even with shipping it doesn't cost much to order it from amazon.co.uk . All it takes is a multi-region DVD player (doesn't every anime fan already have one?)

The flashback scene of the little boy "confessing " to her was especially sweet. And that ending.... wooh!

This movie actually looks good, I love the "Studio Gibli" movies and it's a darn shame that this movie has yet to be released here in the USA. Oh well, at least I have others.
