@SkedgySky Even 1 crab can bring gpu to its knees if its made of Billion polygons, even an eye of that crab can stop PC from runnng. The point is that crabs dont need that polycount, here we see just a tech demo. I think this crab would look the same even if it was 100 times less detailed and that definitely won't get you a slideshow. Also check NVDIA's GTC 2010 demo. 1.3 Billion polys are rendered realtime using tessellation and Fps is decent.
That's what I'm talking about for about 2 years, and no one seems to listen....ATI cards have built-in hardware acceleration for tesselation since the radeon 9000 series.
ATI's Tessellation isn't as advanced as DX11's. DX11's has many more features that make it worth while for developers. Not to mention by incorporating it in DX11, it becomes cross hardware compatible. So developers don't need to say "Oh well tessellation is only going to work on ATI cards, so It's not worth implementing". But we still need to wait for the widespread adoption of DX11 cards, which will take a good 2 years to grow a good user base.
@raonipaes tessilation has only been around since dx10.1. i dont know if the 9000 series is or not. but you can find tessilation demos done with 10.1 on nvidia and ati cards that are about 2 years old. i have never seen tessilation on anything lower than 10.1
@raonipaes Yep, You're thinking of Truform and according to Wiki its was introduced with the 8500! and it was definitely tessellation. It may have just be around the edges of rounded objects I don't really know. I'll have to research it! :)
So much detail for a prop on a map that not many people even notice. Love your dedication to detail.

I like how the FPS drops to almost 1/3 or 1/4 of what it is without tesselation.
Five of these crabs on the beach and you're viewing a slideshow!

@brewfest2008
Take a look at this r350 series graphic card specification straight from ATI's manual:
"TruForm 2.0:
2nd generation N-Patch higher order surface support
Discrete and continuous tessellation levels per polygon
Displacement mapping"
