The songs where there are just clear vocals touch me much more than the growls. They are the type of songs I'd want playing while I die peacefully in my sleep.
Has anyone ever read the book "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower"? I just finished it today... and when I closed the book after finishing, I felt like listening to this song....
I hope they rebound after Watershed. The last album was over-produced and did not feel like Opeth at all. As a fan who still thinks Orchid was one of their best albums they, they need to return to their roots. Or else I feel many fans like myself will lose faith in such a great band.
"And as I read "I'll die alone", I know she's aching." Good God, HEART-WRENCHING! I love the perspective of the lyrics. It was ingenius of Akerfeldt to write about the letter instead of strictly about Rosemary.
I started with Watershed I thought i'd never love a song more than Porcelain Heart but I was DEAD wrong when I found out the other albums my fave album is Still Life and my fave song is Face Of Melinda
you know a band (opeth) is awesome when their worst cd (ghost reveries) is still great. Now people may not agree with me, but I own all of opeths cds, have been listening to them for 10 + years, and have seen them 3 times in concert, I know opeth haha. This cd is not their best work but that doesnt mean its bad, its just no orchid, still life, MAYH, or morningrise. Still Life is their best work, but the other 3 i mentioned were close to still life in quality. Opeth is original and timeless.
this song makes me melt. i seriously feel something flowing inside my heart, especially during the chorus. and i mean this as literally as it can get.
Its not "hard begin to listen Opeth" I loved them right away, first 3 songs I heard blew me away back in 1999. They're still one of my favorite bands to this day!
Lyrically it doesn't fit but the feel of the song goes GREAT with the video. Very passive, kinda like you just gotta sit back and watch as it all goes down the drain
@Lifer35 thank you sooooo much for posting this video. It's absolutely stunning. I never cared that much for this song before I saw this video but now I love it like every other opeth song. btw are these graphics from a film or tv show?
Dude every time that I hear this song I remind your video WTF jaja, great job I think… Great song for the end of the world… I can’t even describe Opeth with words; you only have to listen to the music to feel it.
I'm a huge dream theater fan and i'm just starting to get into opeth. I got ghost reveries and still life. listened to both all the way through and i'm now just letting it sink in. The growling vocals, something i'm not used to are starting to grow on me and i'm trying to keep an open mind about it. But what is a really good cd to get into opeth? for a dream theater fan? i think i like ghost reveries the most out of the two i got.
@senecadawg2 I suggest checking out My Arms, Your Hearse if you want their really heavy stuff and also checking out Blackwater Park, which is probably their best album overall. Damnation is nice and soft, Deliverance is nice and heavy, Watershed is a decent mixture of both and is probably their most progressive album overall. My personal fav is Ghost Reveries, but Opeth is one of their bands that I find incapable of disliking in the slightest.
Things I need if the world comes to an End: a Cohiba Cigar in the left hand, a Glass of Laphroig in the right hand, my muse in the Arms and this Song in the Ear - with those Things I could die Happy^^
I must say, I don't like their lyrics too much. They're very abstract, and very poetic, but somewhat alien to me. But the music... and the voice... the music reaches to the depths of my soul, and I can't help but resonate. Or headbang, on some songs.
I like to think that although this is quite a sad song, it's also very beautiful in a way. It's very inspiring personally to my artwork. Really lovely song.
2010 has been the my lonsliest year ever. I lived in a foreign country alone, without friends and a language barrier. And from this summer until newyear I have and will be sitting alone at home while my GF works and I'm unemployed. I'll gladly ring out 2010 with the bell this year.
i hope were lucky enough that if a meteor hits earth that it hits water... and that we get to listen to this one more time before we all get turned to dust or starve to death xD
@Holdsworthands From the moment I heard Opeth I knew right then and there that this is the most talented band on Earth...And it would be nothing less than a privilege to be able to hear this as the world ends....
@Holdsworthands How was it hard? Good music now is good music 100 years ago, or a 100 years from now. I think you may have just been under influence of bad music for so long that it took some adjustment to open your ears to this :D
@Holdsworthands You couldn't be more right:) You must grow, you can't just listen them once and like them. I started listening them 3 years ago, but hated them until summer, 2010.
@Sintwe it happened to me... but it was the first time that I listened death metal too hahaha it was a great shock the first time, but now I have all the records and I can´t see a week without an Opeth song :) when I think that is because of the death growls that the people don´t listen to this incredible band I feel sorry for all of them... everyone needs to listen to Opeth, a very special band indeed... great music.
@JodyyC I hear you, I've tried for a long time to show people the awesomness that is Opeth but I've come to learn that some people just "get it" and others just don't and unless they let themselves open up to something that at first is very VERY different from what they have listened to their whole lives, they most likely never will get it. I've mostly given up trying. After all, it isn't my loss.
@FranLesPaul I started with Ghost Reveries and so everything else seemed super weird to me. I even went so far as to say that I didn't like the old stuff at all. Recently I've started taking the time to sit through the older stuff, even if it is too different at first.
Still not sure about Morningrise, but Orchid is cool, MAYH has got some good stuff. Still Life is AMAZING. BP obviously is great. Deliverance I'm not fond of. Damnation is terrific. Watershed I like a whole lot. GR is my favorite
@losermonster I started with BP, Ghost Reveries is my fav though. I really have to start listening to the older albums. Still Life is a masterpiece, no doubt about it. I actually don't like Watershed that much, I mean I love some songs, but all the songs from BP or Reveries are my favourite songs ever. Damnation and Deliverance kick major ass. So different, yet they're all Opeth. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and brutal at the same time. Gotta love Mikael!
I picture a man in the midst of a war, reading his girls letter, and then after the lyric "I know she's aching"......
She reads his letter, where his "pen must have slipped to the side" .....because he was shot and killed while writing the letter....and her concerns of dying alone have suddenly come true.
This basically shows that even with all the nuclear weapons and government shit thats going on, nothing can save us from the sheer brutality of the solar system and all these conflicts we are having on earth are pretty fucking pointless...
We live in an age where many bands claim to be "trendy" and yet its so rare for that statement to actually ring true.Opeth are one notable exception to the rule; their astonishing back catalouge is a testament to a spirit of musical exploration and progressive instincts running wild.Opeth stand apart from the underground extreme metal scene that spawned them. Eccenric, eclectic and humble to the last, the band continue to enchant + entrance fans of metal music that resounds with heart and soul
I personally don't like the end of the world concept for this song. It doesn't fit the lyrics at all. It may fit the sound of the song but not the lyrics. I really like the lyrics to this song, and it's a little depressing, there's not too many songs that make me feel emotion. But this one does.
opeth is one of the best groups of our generation (with radiohead and others) and nobody know them...WHY? why is this always people like justin bieber that every persons knows? I wish that one day people will listen to real music, when?
It is a good concept, but you are missing the point. The song is about a man reading the letters of a long deceased woman whom he finds more kinship with than any living person. It is about the heartbreak he feels at being unable to comfort her, as well as her untimely death. I love the song. The video is good too.
everything makes fucking sence,,, why dont believe that its going to end ??/ because it ;s been said lots of time, but we are getting closer and closer to year 2012 and there are more and more disasters going on. makes me think
opeth are very beautiful for the difference between the songs (for example, master apprentices and weakness) and for the beauty of them!!! I love opeth, they are amazing and wonderful, the only band that I love at 100% with my heart! (sorry for my english)
Id want this song playing on my ipod if i was jumping off a building lol. Amazing tune, very sad. Actually only getting into this band, I ignored them for far too long, they rock!
Too many people argue about stupid shit when it comes to Metal. Instead of conforming and being a bunch of whining cunts how bout you shut the fuck up and enjoy the amazing song??
opeth, john butler trio and cassandra wilson are my favourite music picks, anyone want to attack me for what i happen to like, seems to be the buzz of the comments to this vid.
i think opeth would appricate being enjoied no matter what other music the person was in to.
just coz its metal (metal/jazz really) doesnt mean you have to be hard core about it.
but it great to see your passionate about them!! good shit!
and well done to the maker, i really think it works nicely!
Opeth is one of the more unappreciated Metal bands. They remind me so much of Hoobastank, they have their talent but they're not famous. It's unfair that shit artists like Soulja Boy get all the fame and awesome bands like this are less known. Opeth, for life.
Wow, I really hope you're joking, but after looking at your profile I can see that you're not joking; just stupid. First of all, Opeth IS famous and Hoobastank (while very shitty) is even MORE famous. They're played on mainstream radio stations all over the world for fucks sake. How in the hell can you compare a band like Opeth to a mainstream, record-label made generic manufactured shitty band like Hoobastank that writes boring, uninspired shit just to get rich? I'm sorry for you, I really am.
And I'm sorry for you. People like Hoobastank; what's it to you? Learn to respect what other people like. I can listen to anything from Lamb Of God all the way to Hoobastank. Is there ant problem with that? Hoobastank and Opeth are two of my favourite bands. Please learn to respect that and not just diss it.
im sorry man, but he´s got a point. i´m respecting your taste in music, but you just have to admit you were wrong about comparing opeth to hoobastank. And yes, he is right about opeth being famous, they are definetly NOT AN UNAPPRECIATED BAND, NOT AT ALL.
Oh my god Opeth!

It is a good concept, but you are missing the point. The song is about a man reading the letters of a long deceased woman whom he finds more kinship with than any living person. It is about the heartbreak he feels at being unable to comfort her, as well as her untimely death. I love the song. The video is good too.

opeth are very beautiful for the difference between the songs (for example, master apprentices and weakness) and for the beauty of them!!! I love opeth, they are amazing and wonderful, the only band that I love at 100% with my heart! (sorry for my english)

opeth, john butler trio and cassandra wilson are my favourite music picks, anyone want to attack me for what i happen to like, seems to be the buzz of the comments to this vid.
i think opeth would appricate being enjoied no matter what other music the person was in to.
just coz its metal (metal/jazz really) doesnt mean you have to be hard core about it.
but it great to see your passionate about them!! good shit!
and well done to the maker, i really think it works nicely!

Opeth is one of the more unappreciated Metal bands. They remind me so much of Hoobastank, they have their talent but they're not famous. It's unfair that shit artists like Soulja Boy get all the fame and awesome bands like this are less known. Opeth, for life.
curtis1567 2 years ago 2
Wow, I really hope you're joking, but after looking at your profile I can see that you're not joking; just stupid. First of all, Opeth IS famous and Hoobastank (while very shitty) is even MORE famous. They're played on mainstream radio stations all over the world for fucks sake. How in the hell can you compare a band like Opeth to a mainstream, record-label made generic manufactured shitty band like Hoobastank that writes boring, uninspired shit just to get rich? I'm sorry for you, I really am.
NWG92 2 years ago
And I'm sorry for you. People like Hoobastank; what's it to you? Learn to respect what other people like. I can listen to anything from Lamb Of God all the way to Hoobastank. Is there ant problem with that? Hoobastank and Opeth are two of my favourite bands. Please learn to respect that and not just diss it.
curtis1567 2 years ago
lamb of god is also mainstream

im sorry man, but he´s got a point. i´m respecting your taste in music, but you just have to admit you were wrong about comparing opeth to hoobastank. And yes, he is right about opeth being famous, they are definetly NOT AN UNAPPRECIATED BAND, NOT AT ALL.
I agree w/ you about "opeth for life" :)
