Jimi was clearly obsessed with his legacy and having earned extra spending cash through touring he wanted to do the bands third album right and at times went a little overboard (doing 47 takes on this song caused the manager Chas Chandler to quit, and Noel Redding the bassist to walk out). However, with results like this and across the spectrum of Electric Ladyland who can argue with the greatest guitarist of all-time.
I bought this album last year for the first time (I'm only 19, cut me some slack), and ever since this has been one of my all time favorite songs. There's just something so great about it that I can't even put my finger on
On this song it took 47 takes to finish and in the process made bassist Noel Redding walk out of the studio, with Jimi recording not only the lead and rhythm guitar dubs and riffs, but he also played the bass part as well.... his genius has never been matched by anyone in the forty or so years ago he has was on our earth and is still relevant until this very day...
fuck yea this album is legend its funny how jimis masterfully crafted music has not only held up to this day but mostly surpasses in skill and genius anything to be made in the past 40 years
This had something to do about the Riots that were happening in the cities back then in the late '60's. Once again Classic Hendrix. He really had a psychedelic pulse on those issues; he definitely had the Groove.
Yes, this is the song where Noel Redding got frustrated at the number of takes and went to a pub, necessitating Hendrix to play the bass part and Chas Chandler quit as manager, because of the 47 takes. So, what did Hendrix achieve -- another guitar masterpiece that 43 yrs later, no one can duplicate. The guitar work on this song is equal to All Along the Watchtower, Easy Ryder, or Night Bird. Hendrix was a total genius. House Burning Down was truly flawless as noted earlier.
this song truely showcases his excellent song writing ability, and he made a guitar sound like it spoke to you!!!!!!!!!!! 40 years gone and he still is the best!!!!!!!!! Hendrix all day fuck the music played on the radio nowadays
This song just goes to show that Hendrix once again knew what he was doing. Lots of dynamics, great leads, nice rhythym, great chord selection, and every note had it's place -- a Hendrix hallmark. That lead guitar is a thread virtually the entire song, yet there's no noodling. This is purportedly the song that Chas Chandler walked out in E.L. recording, because supposedly there were 47 takes on the song. But, listen to other bands try to cover the song, they can't come close to Hendrix quality.
My mom turned me on to Hendrix in the 70s.I wore this side of the Electric Ladyland album the fuck out!Still rainin still dreamin, house burning down, all along the watchtower, voodoo child. It doesent get any better!!!!
This was a favorite album of mine all through the years. I can remember hearing this awesome solo at the end under a night sky in a much different state of mind.
@flagwaver1969 Yeah :) I remember not entering a party because I had to hear the entire album first in the car outside, in a different state of mind indeed.
Yea, bro. The intro on this song is phenomenal....one of Hendrix's hallmark's - stunning intros. Another great intro is the Hey Joe intro on the Winterland LP - a jaw dropping beautiful intro that sends a chill up my frickin' spine. And those masterpiece intros are missing on most of the sock music songs that has since proceeded Hendrix. You might hear a wow type intro like Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption", but you won't hear beautiful intros that leave you numb like Hendrix could play.

The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Wild Cherry, Average White Band, and others of "that" music genre must be in quite a paradox. On the one hand, I'm sure they were sad when they learned the world lost its all time greatest musician. But, on the other hand, the door was now open for them to have lucrative careers performing "that" music. If Jimi was still alive, "that" music may have never taken off.
to all that didn't know...regarding the bass on this track...i think hendrix layed down the bass guitar for this one. this was about the time noel quit the group. Hendrix layed down the bass for these other well known songs...gypsy eyes, 1983, and if a 6 was 9...with a 6 string hagstrom bass. safe to say for some tracks noone else could put the bass down like jimi.
I fucking LOVE the tunes on Electric Ladyland, but his guitar tone sounds like shit on it in my opinion... This is going to get a thumbs down isnt it haha.

@leerey14 Jimmy Page is a great guitarist, not as good as Jimi, so he's not on lead though. Tim Comerford is the bassist for Rage Against the Machine, and he plays some sweet funk-based basslines.
@WalkingCorn Listen to Black Hole Sun (accoustic), The Day i Tried To Live, Fell on Black Days, Chris Cornell seriously is one of the best living singers on the planet.
@procritic09 If I can expand on that idea and add a keyboard player
Jimi Hendrix - Lead Guitar/Vocals
Jimmy Page - Rhythm Guitar
Chris Cornell - Vocals
Tim Comerford - Bass
Jon Lord - Keyboards
John Bonham - Drums
Others I would consider would be Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers as Bassist (one of the best bass players of the past twenty years), and Ian Paice from Deep Purple, (as I think he is one of the best unsung drummers of that early era of rock music),
So true... many of his songs are packed full of messages and lyrically deep. I think a lot of people just hear the music and don't listen to the words.
Here's my dream group - Jimi Hendrix (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (bass), Miles Davis (trumpet), John McLaughlin (guitar), Mitch Mitchell (drums). Now that would have been some group.

@l337man4 : I agree--way underrated. Social commentary too, which Jimi didn't do that often. It was clearly an "anti-riot" message to his brothers. Noel Redding is NOT playing bass on this cut--it's Jimi. It's been said Jimi could (and did) play bass guitar as good as anyone. Casady played bass on some LadyLand cuts, but this one sounds like Jimi for sure. And what guitar! There is a story about Jimi losing the master tapes to LadyLand. Jimi said quality in the sound was lost.
Agree, VERY much underrated. Actually, I like this a lot more than All Along the Watch Tower, which to me is overrated.
Doesn't surprise me it was said Jimi played bass well. I like Casady very much as a bassist. I have only seen Jack listed on Voodoo Child. Do you know what other cuts he played on? I assume one is the Slight Return.
As to social commentary, I think there was some also on "1983 a merman I should turn to be", tho I think I think I read he was into sci-fi which 1983 is.
are you kidding? TONS of his songs contained social commentary- from the more poetic and indirect commentary on the human condition in tunes like "Castles Made Of Sand", "Message of Love" and "Astro Man" to completely in-your-face and topical stuff like "If 6 was 9", "Freedom", "Straight Ahead", and of course "Machine Gun" which is one of the most poignant uses of music as social commentary ever recorded.
@finallytina U might as well mention the whole Band of Gypsys album: Power to Love, Message of Love, We Gotta Live Together. He covered All Along The Watchtower. And who can forget about the somber, Hey Joe. Machine Gun is the greatest metaphysical expression thru music ever. His guitar mimicing a machine gun, then mimicing bombs dropping and exploding at the end of the song is stupifying.
Yes he did but it's well documented that the intro to this song was played on a Les Paul. You can clearly hear the difference between the two guitars when the rhythm guitar starts up. Nice interplay between the two sounds throughout the song.
We all have our pain. I was 14 in 1969. Jimi came through Tucson Arizona on his way to L.A. at about sundown and if you have seen the desert at that time you would understand why he stopped (I actually saw the home move that Noel and Mitch made as well) and my friend got wind from his older brother that Jimi was going to play and asked me if I wanted to come. I did not believe him, and had a bad cold too. Forever I get to see jimi sitting at his feet while he played. Man did I miss out?
WTF? Is this the true abdulfez, the racist bigot from the anti-semetic comments on other vids? Maybe its just jews you hate abdulfez, obviously Hendrix is OK being black. Were he a jew, no doubt his music would be some cryptic message in your eyes, telling people to kill all non jews or some such fucking bullshit. You low piece of racist scum, you are not welcome on these pages.

@Aldebaron9
Yes he did but it's well documented that the intro to this song was played on a Les Paul. You can clearly hear the difference between the two guitars when the rhythm guitar starts up. Nice interplay between the two sounds throughout the song.

@Aldebaron9 He also played a Gibson Flying V ;)

Man did I miss out?
abdulfez 3 years ago 3
