  • Yo, Horseflogger? Who the F is jean luc?

  • Jean-Luc Ponty: the guy who plays violin!

  • Violinist here is Jerry Goodman. This is the original Mahavishnu Orchestra line-up. JLP didn't join until they recorded Apocalypse several years after this.

  • Jean Luc Ponty played with Frank Zappa for a little bit and also with Stanley Clarke and George Duke.

  • @bellecheval no

    here jerry plays the violin

  • If this is'nt beautiful, I don't know what is...

  • The Mars Volta need to cut these guys a paycheck!

  • These guys rocked hard and fuckin LOUD! Live on, MO!

  • is this tune "Dawn" as i think it is ? My favorite MO album has to be Inner Mountain Flame ,I juat can't ever get tired of listen to it.

  • its a classic

  • Good stuff...Mahavishnu is just on such a great musical level, so different and unique and talented, they all know their instruments really well!

  • Saw Billy Cobham in concert in a small venue

many years ago. They guy is all class.

Came out and gave a verbal drum clinic after the show,

signed autographs and was just generally a nice guy.

My seats were right behind him, as he was set up

on stage right facing the center of the stage.

Mindblowing. First time (and last time?) I'd seen a truely ambidextrous drummer.

  • There... I feel better now. Thanks.

  • Cobham is genius..

  • Its not from inner mountain flame, its from birds of fire. Learn your Mahavishnu Orchestra!!!

  • It ACTUALLY is from "Inner Mounting Flame."

  • Yes...correct...this is the end section of "You Know, You Know"...folks...walterkolosky here LITERALLY wrote the book on the Mahavishnu Orchesta...for real...check it out. My thanks to him for doing so.

  • Definitely 'Inner Mounting Flame'

unless there's some bonus-track version of

'Birds of Fire' that I haven't heard.

  • amazing drumming!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My friend was assitant engineer on some of Billy's Records, Did U know He used to be a NAVY SEAL???

a sick drummer and hell fuckin kill u hahahaha Damn!

  • WOW!!!!

  • The man on the triple bass! Tama was nothing until his endorsing!

  • Great stuff; great suggestion on the website; that site answers the question of whatever happened to this kind of pure musicality (in fact it's the only place McLaughlin promotes his music anymore). Lots of incredible stuff there.

  • "Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Walter Kolosky.

    Allaboutjazz.com says:

"Kolosky has finally righted a wrong, delivering a book that is as factual an account of the group's rise and fall as will likely ever be published…”

Walter Kolosky says: …it is my turn to pay the music back. “Power, Passion and Beauty” is my offering."

  • Virtuoso, but full of soul and spirit. Now that's something you don't see too often, specially on today's self-indulting individualistic virtuosos.

  • Musicianship as good as it gets. sad you dont see this kind of playing anymore....

  • Virtuoso playing, truly inspiring!

What happened to this kind of pure musicality?

  • I wonder the same thing.

  • must mention the name of the song...it's "You Know You Know" from the Inner Mounting Flame. Great album. Buy it.

  • great showcase for the hard-hitting style of billy cobham.

  • Superhuman-drumming...

  • masterpiece !!
